Principal’s Report

As we reach the halfway point of term 2, it is a really busy time, as teachers reflect and assess each child’s progress, in preparation for the mid-year reports. This time is a great chance to celebrate just how far children have progressed in their core reading, writing and mathematical skills as well the other associated learning behaviours and knowledge gathering that has occurred so far in 2017. Our teachers use a variety of assessment tools to gain deep insight into what children have achieved so far this year and discuss these results in their teaching teams. I look forward to seeing the reports later in the term and hearing of the wonderful progress our children have made. This week’s article from Michael Grose is titled ‘Parenting the in-between years.’ Parenting children in the 8-12 year old age range can be great fun as children learn, explore and investigate themselves and their world. It can also be a challenge as children continue to build their unique identity and push the boundaries. Enjoy this article and reflect on its good advice as you continue to parent children at this important developmental stage.

School Review In my last newsletter report, I outlined some of the wonderful achievements we have celebrated as part of our Pre-review, Self-evaluation. As part of this investigation, we have begun to identify a number of areas that may make up our next body of work as part of our new Strategic Plan.

Some ideas that will be considered in our new Strategic Plan are:

Re-develop our school vision statement

Continue with developing consistent practices throughout our school.

Continue to support the ongoing development of teachers through the development of a school-based coaching program.

Ensure student voice is used to inform decisions that affect them.

Continue to fine tune and consolidate our work in establishing High Impact Teaching Strategies in Reading, Writing and Maths.

Review and improve our assessment and reporting to parents.

Fully explore and utilise formative assessment.

Ensure children’s ICT skills are consistently developed and programs are effectively used to support learning in Literacy and Numeracy.

Continue to develop ‘Middle Leaders’ and increase our succession planning opportunities.

Consider improving and exploring new and alternate internal teaching spaces.

Further promote our student wellbeing programs and support others in the wider education community.

Continue to develop support for children and their families with anxiety.

Continue to explore and ensure we cater for our High Capacity students.

Improve staff understanding of Metacognition, Critical and Creative Thinking and its use in the classroom.

Fully employ the Sentral parent portal.

Investigate developing a sister-school relationship

This is just part of our discussions so far, with more to come with the school review in early term 3. We look forward to discussing and planning our next steps in the on-going development of our wonderful school. Our next step is to complete our school review with an external reviewer in early term 3 followed by the development of our next strategic plan, outlining our work for 2018-2021.

2018 Enrolments and Prep Tours I know it’s hard to believe, but planning for 2018 is already underway. We are currently holding tours for new enrolments, with a focus on Preps for 2018. If you have or know of a family considering enrolling their child at MEPS in the coming future, please contact the office to either book a tour or pick up an enrolment pack. If you have a younger sibling to enrol in Prep for next year, please do so as soon as possible. Traditionally it is our current families who are the last to enrol their younger children in our school. We base our planning on the actual number of students enrolled. Please see the office to pick-up an enrolment form.

School Cross Country Well done to our wonderful students who took on the School Cross Country on Monday the 15th of May. It was great to see so many children do their very best to complete the challenging courses for their age group. Congratulations to those students who received medals. We wish all our students who will represent our school at the upcoming district events all the best as they compete against other local schools.

Important Dates Monday, 12th June – Queen’s Birthday Thursday, 29th June – Pupil-free Day - Parent-teacher interviews Term 2 concludes on Friday, 30th June, at 2:30pm Term 3 begins on Tuesday, 18th July (Monday, 17th July is a Pupil-free Day)

Assistant Principal’s Report

School Concert Please keep these dates free Monday, 4th and Tuesday, 5th September, for our whole school concert at the Frankston Arts Centre. The children have started their rehearsals and it promises to be another great performance. This is definitely one of the highlights of our year, so put the dates on your calendar now and keep the nights free for the children to perform.

Grandcarer’s Morning Tea We have a number of grandparents who have a very active role in caring for their grandchildren in our school community. This could be a permanent or temporary living arrangement, shared with their parents, aunties, uncles, child-care, etc. In order to support each other we are meeting for coffee once a term to chat and discuss the challenges and joys of being involved in raising children in an extended family arrangement.

Our next coffee catch up will be at Deganis in Mt Eliza Village, on Monday, 29th May at 9:30am. All ‘grandcarers’ welcome.

After school supervision At 3.15pm when the bell goes, we have 3 staff who walk with the children as they go out the back gate, side gate and front gates. The three staff then meet at the front of the school and supervise the children until 3.30pm. The playgrounds are not supervised after school. Any child who remains at school after 3.15pm to play, needs to be supervised by their parents or another adult designated to care for them.

Parents/carers who have not collected their children by 3.30pm will be contacted and the children will be taken to After School Care to be supervised until the parents arrive (parents will be responsible for costs incurred).

Please arrive at school by 3.30pm to pick up your children as it causes anxiety for the child to be kept waiting and wondering where their parents are.
