Letter From The President Bob Mashburn President, Mile- High Section
Fall is in the air! The Aspens are changing, leaves are
falling, and Halloween decorations fill the isles in the
stores. It’s a great time of the year to take a drive
into the mountains to see the leaves changing and
wildlife moving around.
My first year looking back as President, we started off
with some changes in Board Members; a new
Secretary; a new editor of the newsletter, a new
membership chair, and a new web master. I would
like to thank all of you who have stepped up to take
on these positions and the Board members who have
helped me this year. Thank you! I have had the
pleasure of meeting more members with the Mile-
High section and other members from across the
country. We have a great group of members here in
the Mile-High Section and I look forward to meeting
more of you at future events and socials.
We have some great things planned for the rest of
this year: October 3rd our Annual Member meeting at
Perfect Landing; on the 21st our Monthly Social at
Golden Europe; November 7th an afternoon reception
and Steinway piano concert at Schmitt Music; on the
14th our Planning Day Breakfast for 2016; on the 18th
our Social at Los Dos Potrillos; and December 5th our
Holiday Party at Mount Vernon Country Club.
A few events we have planned for 2016 are a trip to
Wyoming and a trip to the four corners. Help us plan
more at the Planning Day Breakfast. If you are
unable to make the breakfast, please email any ideas
or suggestions you have for 2016 to
Changes with our newsletter! We will no longer be
publishing hard copies of The Constellation as of
January 1, 2016 (see insert).

Two Pinnacles of Excellence
Join us for a delightful afternoon reception and piano concert celebrating the history of Steinway and
Mercedes-Benz.
Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 PM
Schmitt Music
155 W. Hampden Avenue-Suite 155, Englewood
Refreshments will be served
In 1886 the first car powered by a fast running combustion engine rolled out of the workshop of Gottlieb
Daimler and Karl Benz in Germany, signaling the era of the "internal combustion engine" and putting into
motion one of the greatest changes in human history and the environment.
On October 6, 1888, a contract was signed between William Steinway of Steinway & Sons in New York and
Gottlieb Daimler. William Steinway’s association with design engineer Wilhelm Maybach, who was Daimler's
confidant, allowed him to easily get in touch with Daimler with his proposal for licensing the engines in the US.
The resulting contract provided for the manufacture of Daimler engines and products in America and resulted in
the Daimler Motor Company at the site of the Steinway piano factory in Long Island, New York. In the
beginning, only stationary and marine engines were produced there – all made according to a patent owned by
Gottlieb Daimler.
The first “American Mercedes” built in New York in 1905 was essentially a copy of the Mercedes 45 hp which
was already built in Caanstatt, Germany. Between 1904 and 1907 Steinway & Sons assembled Mercedes
automobiles at their plant in Long Island. Only a few “American Mercedes” were ever built. In 1907, after a
fire destroyed most of the factory, the company ceased operations.
You will drive away from this event with an enhanced appreciation for the heritage of both of these remarkable
instruments. Watch future issues of The Constellation and milehigh.mbca.org for updates. For more
