The Mercedes-Benz Vans division had an outstanding year in 2011. At € 9,179 billion, our revenues were 17 percent higher than in the previ-ous year, while our EBIT totalled € 835 million and our return on sales reached 9.1 percent. Sales of new vehicles rose by 18 percent to a total of 264,193 units. We sold 178,300 vehicles (+14 %) in our key market of Western Europe, while sales of the Sprinter increased by 62 percent in the NAFTA region to 22,300 units. We also sold 13,500 vehicles (+11 %) in China, where we commenced local production of the Vito and Viano vans and the bus version of the Sprinter. Sales in Latin America were up by 9 percent to a total of 13,700 units. All of these figures impres-sively demonstrate that our “Vans goes global” strategy is bearing fruit.
Our entrance into the small van segment in this fiscal year marks the beginning of a new chapter in our vans business. In addition, we are rounding out our product lineup with the Mercedes-Benz Citan urban delivery vehicle. The Citan is taking us into a key segment of the fu-ture, and it marks the launch of the next stage of our growth offensive. The new vehicle was unveiled in Amsterdam in early April, with sales scheduled to commence from the autumn. In Europe, the small van segment has expanded well beyond the niche stage and now totals around 700,000 units per year. We want to successfully participate in this market. We will produce the Mercedes-Benz Citan in cooperation with our partner Renault in Maubeuge, France.
Last year we continued to shape the future of mobility. The Mercedes-Benz BlueEFFICIENCY package and the 400 battery-electric Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELLs that we produced in 2011 demonstrate that we are committed to promoting drive solutions for the future.

» March 2011 Support vehicles for the World Drive. Four Sprint-ers and four Vianos accompa-nied the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL cars on their zero-emis-sion World Drive, which extended across four continents. The tour covered more than 30,000 km and took 125 days to complete. During this unparalleled test and demonstration drive, a Sprinter 519 CDI 4x4 served as a mobile refueling vehicle for the three B-Class fuel cell cars. A Sprinter 319 CDI 4x4 carried all of the spare parts, and two more Sprinters served as maintenance vehicles. Further support was provided by four Mercedes-Benz Vianos with 258 hp/190 kW engines. These vans served as shuttle buses for the accompanying journalists and camera teams.
FleetBoard available for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ex works. The FleetBoard telemat-ics system, which could previ-ously only be retrofitted into the Sprinter, has also been available as original equipment ex works since March 2011. FleetBoard enables fleets to substantially re-duce their operating and process costs. Trip analyses have shown that the system can reduce the fuel consumption of each vehicle by an average of 1.5 liters per 100 km. Because vehicles travel up to 500 km per day, the extra cost of buying the system quickly pays off. Additional features in-clude a transport management system and FleetBoard Mapping, a time management service for recording working times, which is useful for payroll accounting.

» April 2011 All-wheel drive for everyone. From April 4 to 15, international automotive journal-ists were able to extensively test Mercedes-Benz Vans’ complete range of all-wheel-drive vehicles in practice in Turin, Italy. The ve-hicle lineup encompassed the el-egant and finely appointed Viano 4Matic, the rugged Vito 4x4, the versatile Sprinter 4x4, and the in-destructible Vario 4x4. These vans and MPVs have several things in common: maximum traction, un-surpassed off-road driving safety, and driving comfort comparable to that of the basic road version with rear-wheel drive. Another thing they have in common is the fact that three of the four model series are equipped with Daimler’s cutting-edge Electronic Traction System (4ETS), which is precisely adapted to the vehicle’s specific application.
Two new Vito models. The Mer-cedes-Benz Vito product range is being expanded to include a new vehicle for commercial passenger transport (Vito Shuttle) and a van for the skilled trades and for ser-vice applications (Vito Crew). The two models boast a new design, great efficiency, and customer-fo-cused functionality. Whereas the Vito Shuttle features outstanding
comfort, spaciousness, and func-tionality, the Vito Crew focuses on profitability, functionality, and versatility.
» May 2011 Reliable over a dis-tance of one million kilometers. The Mercedes-Benz Vito 115 CDI that is operated by a South Afri-can funeral parlor business has clocked up more than 1,000,000 km without needing to be repaired or having its engine and transmis-sion replaced. The enterprise, Let’s Management & Transport Services, now has seven Vitos and one Sprinter in its fleet, and customers appreciate the com-pany’s work and its reliability. The business respectfully transports many deceased persons to other African countries as well, includ-ing Eritrea, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Kenya. Sprinter is the Courier, Express, and Parcel Van of the Year 2011. For the 11th time in all, ETM-Ver-lag Stuttgart has held a competi-tion for selecting the Courier, Ex-press, and Parcel Van of the Year. A panel of 40 professionals from the courier, express, and parcel delivery business evaluated a to-tal of 22 participating vehicles in four categories. In addition, ETM-Verlag presented its first innova-
tion award in the Alternative Drive category. As in the past five years, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313 CDI once again took first place, becoming the Courier, Express, and Parcel Van of the Year 2011. The all-electric Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL took first place in the special category for alternative drives.
One-millionth Vito manufac-tured in Vitoria. At the end of May 2011, the one-millionth Vito rolled off the production line at the Mercedes-Benz van plant in Vitoria, Spain. To commemorate this historic event, 40 employees from the plant’s three assembly halls came together to have their picture taken with the facility’s management. Ever since pro-duction of the Vito commenced in September 1995, these 40 employees have worked hard to make the van a success in more than 80 countries around the world. The presentation of the Vito TO in the fall of 1995 also marked the beginning of a new era for the plant in northern Spain. A total of 75,500 units had already been produced by 2000. The next big step was taken in 2003, when the van’s second generation, the rear-wheel-drive Vito NCV2, was introduced.
» June 2011 The Sprinter is once again among the win-ners. Seven wins in the catego-ries for best commercial vehicle and best brand clearly show that Daimler Trucks, Daimler Buses, and Mercedes-Benz Vans remain on the right track. The winners were chosen by more than 7,000 readers of the commercial vehicle magazines Fernfahrer, lastauto omnibus, and trans aktuell, as well as by engineers from DEKRA AG. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was once again among the winning vehicles. The Sprinter, whose name is used to designate its class of vehicle, captured first place in the category “Vans up to 3.5 Tons GVW” for the 15th con-secutive time.
» August 2011 Expansion of the BlueEFFICIENCY package for the Vito and the Viano. Thanks to a new generator management system, some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and stored in the battery during braking. Since September 2011, BlueEFFICIENCY and the new generator manage-ment system have been available as standard equipment in the Vi-ano, the Vito crewbus, and every Vito that can be registered as a passenger car.

» October 2011 Tuscany Tour of the Mercedes-Benz Viano Marco Polo. Tuscany’s charac-teristic features are undoubt-edly its culture, art, landscapes, wine, and cuisine. The Tuscany Tour 2011 showed that the ideal way to explore this famous Ital-ian region is in a Mercedes-Benz Viano Marco Polo. The sales fig-ures also speak for themselves. New vehicle registrations of RVs rose by 18.1 percent in Germany in the first half of 2011, and Mer-cedes-Benz models posted an in-crease of 24.5 percent.
» December 2011 Safety comes first in the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The Sprinter’s safety standards rise even higher at the beginning of 2012, when the enhanced ESP package ADAP-TIVE ESP 9i was introduced as standard equipment. The system improves the vehicle’s braking performance and thus the safety of passengers, cargo, and other road users. The new ESP 9i sys-tem takes the vehicle’s load sta-tus and its center of gravity into account. In addition, it takes corrective action whenever the trailer begins to fishtail, thus helping the driver stabilize the rig as a whole.
Direct contact and assistance in daily life. In December 2011 Mercedes-Benz Vans set up “MYVAN,” the world’s first inter-national social TV platform for di-rect contact with customers. The feature’s main point of contact is the website at www.MYVAN.com, which serves as a service and entertainment platform. The site offers specific assistance in mastering daily challenges with the right transport-oriented solu-tion. The global cooperation with partners and national subsidiar-ies is centrally managed by the Mercedes-Benz Vans division in Stuttgart.
» January 2012 Vito E-CELL suc-cessfully completes one year of field testing. For a whole year, a total of 100 battery-elec-tric Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL vans have been proving their worth in customer operations in Berlin and Stuttgart. The world’s first van with an electric drive has been operating in Germany’ capital since the fall of 2010 and in Stuttgart since early 2011. The final reports issued at the end of the funding period were posi-tive, demonstrating that the Vito E-CELL is ideal for use in city driv-ing. A total of 230 Vito E-CELLs
are now being used in several model regions, where they have clocked up more than 650,000 km. In 2011 the plant in Vitoria, Spain, produced a total of 400 units of this vehicle. Mercedes-Benz Vans has been producing a batch of 2,000 units since 2011. The model range will be diversi-fied through the production of additional variants in the future.
» February 2012 Sales and ser-vice network for the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL. Sales and ser-vice partners for the Vito E-CELL can now be found throughout Germany. More than 33 Daimler dealerships and trading partners sell and service the world’s first series-produced van with electric drive.
» February 2012 Citan: the new urban delivery vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. At Mercedes-Benz Vans’ Function & Brand symposium in the Sindelfingen plant on 3 February, the division announced that it would be in-troducing a new urban delivery vehicle: the Citan. The new model rounds out Mercedes-Benz’s range of vans with the brand’s first urban delivery vehicle.
» April 2012 The new Mercedes-Benz Citan celebrates its world premiere. In the run-up to the RAI international commercial vehicles show in Amsterdam (17-21 April), the Citan urban delivery van made its world debut. This latest addition to the Mercedes-Benz van family is the first vehicle to be created as a result of the strate-gic partnership between Daimler and Renault-Nissan. The Citan will celebrate its public debut at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover in September. The mar-ket launch is scheduled to take place in autumn 2012. Mercedes-Benz Vans, the market leader for large and mid-sized vans with market share of 18 percent in Western Europe, is aiming to sell more than 400,000 units world-wide by 2015.
