12.082 Reports – Informational Items

a. - Nov. 28

Superintendent Report th

- Dr. Holliday was on campus Tuesday. Visited: MCIS, HES, MCSH, MERCER CENTRAL there will be a parent meeting called Step Up on Teen Issue

& the Vocational School. - Met with Comp Care, School counselors and School Psychologists to discuss ways to help our

students. That is where the STEP UP parent night was discussed. This first meeting will deal with self mutilation, substance abuse, depression and mental health issues. We are going to lay the facts out to the parents of exactly what our students are dealing with. It will not be sugar coated. The FRYSCs are providing pizzas that night for the parents. We hope to expand this to monthly meetings.

- The Industrial Board met at MCSH. We hosted the lunch for them, as well as a tour of the high school and showed them the Project Lead the Way. We want to get these folks into our schools and also send students to tour their businesses.

Our students are competing globally – not locally.

Diesel costs are down $17,000 from this time last year. Food services receipts are down from last year, mostly due to more local prepayments early last year.

Attendance Report - Possibly 14 new preschoolers to be enrolled - Asked for Board Member to serve on Calendar Committee: Mr. Stinnett volunteered - Enrollment is up a little: 2991 without preschoolers - Attendance is good: Month 2 96.28; Month 3 95.72 (some flu in our schools already) - Trying to educate parents on the connection of good attendance and success in academics - Have been to Infinite Campus training the last 2 days. Those in attendance were Cindy Ransdell, Emily Guerra, Dana Ross, Karen Larmour and Tim Berger. Approve Agenda: Agenda was approved by consensus. 14. Karen Pridey to Share Arts & Humanities Program Reviews Status; Tricia Russell to Share PLCS Program Reviews Status Noelle McGill and Karen Pridey presented the Arts & Humanities Program Review. Noelle gave the Council a handout that showed the Needs Improvement, Proficient, & Distinguished review choices for the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, Formative and Assessment, Professional Development, and Administrative/Leadership Support. Noelle said that the Arts & Humanities schedule was changed this year to accommodate needs from last year. She also stated that we get caught up in the language and don’t ask students to reflect their work. 5th graders can peer review the 4th

graders work since they were in the program last year. Karen Pridey and Noelle McGill would like to see more teaching artists come to the school but the school has to match artists pay at 50%. In most cases, KET, KY Center for the Performing Arts, or the KY Arts Council will pay half. Tiffany Yeast may try to attend an Arts & Humanities meeting to help with opportunities on funding teaching artists since this relates to her job with state government.

Amy Riley presented the PLCS Program Review in Tricia Russell’s absence. Amy gave the Council a handout that showed the review totals for MCIS. Amy stated that this was an ongoing plan and will be difficult for us. One reason is that MCIS does not have a health educator. Lisa Combs questioned why high school was mentioned a lot in the review guide and what is appropriate for MCIS students. Kimberlee Piazza asked if there should be a district report and not an individual school report. Mary Alice McClain asked if SWORD money could be used with this program. Tiffany Yeast asked about the K-12 curriculum and what it meant. The Council could not come up with answers to make this program work. Kimberlee Piazza wants Mrs. Cobb to ask Jana Stratton about forming a district committee for this program as well as individual school committees. Amy stated that every school will be held accountable and we have to be careful on information overload. Simplicity is needed. 5. Review & Approve Financial Reports The Council reviewed the financial report for 09/30/11. Kimberlee Piazza made a motion to approve the financial report. Lisa Combs seconded the motion. The motion was approved by consensus. 6. Discuss Updated SBDM Budget for the September Revision – Addition of $1,140.00 The SBDM budget changed from $64,923.00 to $66,063.00, an increase of $1,140.00. 7. Discuss KYCID – Systematic Approach to Positive Behavior Intervention/Management The Council received a handout on KYCID (KY Center for Instructional Discipline). Tiffany Yeast said that Terry Yeast uses this approach at the high school and has seen positive results. This approach could be tied in with SWORD or another reward system.

8. Review Committee Minutes Committee minutes were reviewed. Tiffany Yeast asked about the homework policy discussion from the PLCS minutes from the October 06, 2011 meeting. Tiffany’s step-daughter has missed some assignments but has never received a pink slip. Kimberlee Piazza said that the pink slips were overwhelming at first but her team uses them as instructed in the homework policy. Tiffany should contact the teacher to find out why pink slips were not issued for the missing assignments. Mrs. Cobb needs to address this issue with all teachers to make sure that pink slips are being used. 9. KASC Information Item The Council received a handout called KASC-Leading the Way to Student Success. 10. Update on 4th

Grade ITBS Scores-Information Only

The Council received information on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills results for 4th grade. There was no data on ethnicity and disabilities, as those demographics were not given on the ITBS. The Council was able to see a stanine average on both gender and free/reduced lunch, however. 5th

grade results were discussed at the previous SBDM meeting.

11. Discussion on “Needs Improvement” for Writing Program Reviews Jerri Weitzel read some ideas for “needs improvement” for the fall 2011 Writing Program Review from notes written by Mrs. Cobb.

Under Curriculum and Instruction: • We’re in great shape horizontally; will need to have vertical common content team

meetings at least once per grading period. • More “intentional” planning needed. • Integrate student use of technology needed (i.e. creation of PPTs, multi-media

presentations, wikis, blogs, etc.; CPS clickers, recording presentations. • Ramp up differentiation of instruction; continue student conferencing-scaffold. • News show; or school newspaper.

Under Formative and Summative Assessment: • Vertical common content planning days.

Under Professional Development and Support Services: • Need a PD action plan. • School writing cluster leader to work on…with input from colleagues.

Under Administrative Leadership Support and Monitoring: • News show; or school newspaper and on webpage.

12. Review & Discuss Student Achievement Report Thinklink Results-The Council was provided an analysis and charts on Thinklink. Lisa Combs asked about using a different test but Thinklink is the district approved universal screener for elementary and middle school grades. Thinklink was taken very early in school this year.

Page 111: MERCER COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION · 12.095 Approval of Agenda Jim Stinnett 1 12.096 Recognitions Becky Holt 2 12.097 Reports a. Superintendent Report Dennis ...

Categories were different. Will asked about the predictor of Thinklink to CATS test. Kimberlee Piazza said that the spring test was a good predictor. Common Assessment Results-These results need to be addressed at the next council meeting. The Council was unable to understand the charts because there were no performance measures on some of the charts (ORQ information not provided). Mercer County Senior High Regular Monthly SBDM Meeting

October 17, 2011 –

Draft Minutes

Malissa Hutchins called the meeting to order at 6:00 in the Media Center. Those in attendance were: Ms. Hutchins, Lucinda Collins, Carissa Horn, Brian Rowland, Susan Brown, Nate Bordeaux, recording secretary, Erin Milburn, Jaziel Guerra, Sherry Russell, Julia Snellen, Shelly Loyall, Monnie Berger, Dennis Davis and Jana Stratton. Ms. Hutchins shared the minutes from the September 19th

Good News Items that were shared: Homecoming activities went very well the week before Fall Break, with a lot of student and faculty participation. The student council organized the Homecoming Dance, which was very successful, and we are currently planning to have a semi-formal Christmas Dance. Several students were recognized as AP scholars for scoring a 3 or better on multiple AP assessments. Soccer teams are participating in regional tournament games on Tuesday. Band has been Grand Champion the last two competitions and will be participating in regional on Saturday at Madison Southern. The football team is currently riding a three-game winning streak, including a strong showing at Homecoming. We will have Breast Cancer Awareness night at the football game vs. Boyle County on October 21

meeting and they were approved by the council. Minutes will be sent to Ms. Simmons to include in the monthly board packet and will be posted on the school website.

Erin Milburn shared the update on the Writing Program Review. As a school, we will be assessing our progress by use of a student writing folder. Evidence will be collected throughout the year by all content area teachers. This process will allow the district to trace a student’s development as a writer throughout their twelve years of schooling. Students are required to create pieces that represent writing to learn, writing to demonstrate learning and writing for publication. Each department has worked on identifying pieces throughout their curriculum that will be contributed to each student’s writing folder.

. The school is selling T-shirts that say “Real Titans Wear Pink” for $10 and all proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Fund. The Academic Breakfast is scheduled for next Thursday morning and we have invited about 140 sophomores, juniors and seniors to participate in this program.

Jaziel Guerra, Sherry Russell, Julia Snellen and Shelly Loyall shared the update on the Arts and Humanities Program Review. Ms. Russell explained that while the curriculum has not changed from prior years, the program review process is requiring us to look at our courses differently. It is important for parents to know that HAVPA is a college requirement and for our school to consider the evidence of how we are teaching the Arts and Humanities curriculum. Items to analyze are relevance to students’ lives, rigor of our coursework, extended services for students (Music Club, Art Club, etc.) and use of varied instructional strategies in the classroom. Ms. Snellen shared a variety of ways we assess students regarding the curriculum, including projects, art exhibits, performance assessments, presentations of learning, competition, field trips, virtual experiences, formative / summative assessments and other real-world artistic experiences. Ms. Loyall addressed the professional development needs of the program review. Concerns were expressed regarding focusing solely on student learning, as opposed to

also focusing on teacher learning needs, which will have a positive impact on student learning. It was recommended to plan PD for the year from a budgeting standpoint in order to prioritize needs for individual teachers based on program review requirements. Mr. Guerra addressed administrative support and monitoring, which must be assessed in specific ways. The school vision must include a focus on the arts, which has not happened yet. In addition, arts teachers need to remain a part of the master scheduling process and cross-curricular connections need to be strengthened. More consideration needs to be provided for student course placement by the SBDM based on data, as well as support for gifted and talented students.

Lucinda Collins and Monnie Berger shared the Practical Living Program Review update with the council, including the curriculum tie-ins between the Ninth Grade Academy and the Senior High. Many of the indicators that are not fully met are based on evidence which will continue to be collected throughout the school year. The instructional strategies component received many proficient and distinguished marks throughout the category. As a school, we need to delve more into the ILP process for many of the areas in this program review. One of the challenges for student learning expectations is how to help all students to be physically active on a daily basis when courses are organized on a 9-weeks basis or semester. Another area to strengthen is analyzing assessment data and making curricular changes from that analysis, especially for special needs students. The professional development area showed similar challenges to the arts and humanities review in regards to meeting the needs of individual teachers and providing collaboration for teachers with stand-alone courses. Practical Living needs to be considered part of the vision of the school, especially with a focus on instruction and planning time.

The SBDM meeting was adjourned at 7:25 PM. The next scheduled meeting will be on November 21, 2011, at 6:00 PM.
