DEVELOpED IN GERMANyIn the SwabIan town of MagStadt, engIneerS and deSIgnerS work together cloSely to tranSforM IdeaS Into perfect MerIda bIkeS.In the past, the art of frame construction was all that distinguished good bikes from very good bikes. Today, cutting-edge processing options using well-proven materials (e.g. aluminium) or the specific characteristics of specialist products (e.g. carbon) require maximum attention to detail when designing new bikes. Geometric adaption to a bike’s respective functional range and the mechanical complexity of full-suspension rear stays have turned bike development into a real science. Bikes are no longer just bikes, they are the result of many technological and constructional factors whose grand total guarantees that a bike fulfils the exact purpose it was designed for – provided that the concept is carefully thought-out.

That’s why the designers and developers at our R&D headquarters in Magstadt work together closely when ideas become perfect MERIDA bikes. In doing so, from the start of the process our R&D experts goal is the creation of products that more than satisfy our customers demands for reliable and functional bikes to suit every situation – for kids, trekking models or high-tech series like our MTBs of World Cup fame.

MERIDA’s global coverage with distribution in more than 70 countries brings immense advantages. Around the world, our marketing and distribution experts search for current trends, keep close contact with leading international bike magazines and monitor the development in all important global markets. Their input is one of the factors that help the chassis engineers, designers and programmers of MERIDA’s German R&D team define the specification of each bike for the new season.

During the initial concept discussion, all specialists involved address basic questions concerning frame material and final application of the new model. After this initial computer studies are compiled. This early stage involves cutting-edge engineering tools like “Igorion” (suspension software for chassis optimisation) or “pro-E” (3D all-solid simulation). During this process our experts always have in mind the requirements of the end product. Important clearances like tyre widths or the disc brake rotor sizes are already taken into account. After the final computer calculation, aluminium prototypes are welded according to this specification and then checked in under real conditions by the world’s fastest test riders – the pro athletes of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM.

Olympic Gold and Silver, World, Europe and National Championship triumphs, Overall World Cup victory… this team has already achieved everything that pro riders around the globe are working hard for during every season. But to MERIDA, these top-class athletes mean much more than permanent guarantors for constant successes. They are the best and most reliable source for valuable feedback with respect to the development of new bikes.

As soon as the R&D engineers of MERIDA’s German development centre have

finished their first working stage, the new model stands by as a welded aluminium

prototype. This pretest bike is equipped with current season’s components

and is still far away from the final production version. At this point, weight or

visual appearance don’t matter – these aspects are discussed later. Instead,

the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM pro riders and Juergen Falke, MERIDA’s

Head of Design, go about the first practical test of the new development’s

geometry and chassis kinematics. In doing so, the sensible “backside meters”

of Ralph Naef and colleagues detect even the smallest evolution options which

are logged immediately in detail. Is the seat angle too steep or steering angle to

shallow? Could the chain stays be longer for more riding stability or should the

bike be more agile? Does the top tube length calculated correspond correctly to

the seating position? How sensitive and propulsion-neutral is the chassis? With a

background of countless training and racing kilometres, no prototype in the world

is able to deceive the pro riders of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM – to

the delight of our development team and always for the benefit of all MERIDA

customers.

Back in MERIDA’s German R&D headquarters, the data gathered is processed

meticulously before the next run on the test track – and then again until all

participants at this stage of development give the pretest bike a stamp of approval.

Then the engineers take a back seat to our designers. With reference to strict

specifications in terms of target weight, stiffness and particular manufacturing

requirements, the raw aluminium prototype is transformed into a perfectly styled

bike – ready to be produced in MERIDA’s Taiwanese headquarters.

customers can be confident that all MERIDA bikes are manufactured according

to ultimate quality standards whose observance is monitored by independent

testing institutes. MERIDA is an international brand that benefits in two ways

from its corporate structure. Our R&D department in Magstadt represents the

highest level of German development performance and as soon as the European

R&D experts have completed their task our plant in Taiwan, the world’s leading

cycle-manufacturing nation, completes the process.

Since 1972 MERIDA has been based in yuanlin, Taiwan. Regardless of

whether it’s the in-house production of elaborate aluminium frames or the

creation of complex carbon frames by premium production partners, no

other international location offers more bike-manufacturing know-how than

the metropolitan area of Taichung/Taiwan. All MERIDA bikes are crafted using

cutting-edge technology to guarantee long-lasting reliability. This outstanding

quality is proven not only by the superb test results from leading international

bike magazines, but also by regular in-house tests to ensure compliance

with obligatory standards and by external test labs that examine all MERIDA

products with the greatest possible care.

Before MERIDA’s parent plant in yuanlin starts production of a new model,

CNC-machined pre-production models have already been meticulously tested

in the European headquarters. Test samples in all frame sizes are checked

according to mandatory pan-European standards (EN 14764, 14765, 14766 or

14781; depending on model). Inspection of headset and BB stiffness as well as

measurements of comfort control with respect to frame and fork lateral stability

are recorded according to the renowned “TOUR” standard – supplemented by

the fatigue and overload tests of external testing partners like Velotech or EFBe.

Only when all these QA tests are passed and MERIDA’s extra safety margin has

been met do we consider a model to be ready for final production.

There are many ways to construct the rear stay of a full suspension MTB. One key question concerns the position of the rocker link’s pivoting point. The chain position has a significant influence on the relationship between drivetrain forces and the suspension system and in the most often used gears this interaction should be as neutral as possible. Another important factor is the angle at which the suspension strut is triggered by the rocker link during deflection. Only then can the ideal spring characteristics be specified. An XC racer and a long-stroke All Mountain bike must be constructed in completely different ways – even if both follow the same basic principle. All these aspects are taken into account by our R&D experts when implementing our M.O.R.E. concept.

The ideal suspension system, whether it is single-pivot, multi-pivot or Vpp is always something of a compromise. What is important is the efficiency of the system chosen because every chassis should react as sensitively as possible to the ground conditions while the drivetrain influences should be reduced to a minimum. For 2012, all MERIDA full suspension models feature supported single-pivot suspension systems. Despite sharing this basic concept, the NINETy-NINE, ONE-TWENTy and ONE-FORTy function in totally different ways. For optimum performance, our R&D experts worked closely with the pro riders of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM and with the producers of the suspension components to find the best possible configuration among dozens of options. All this results in a superior riding experience – because MERIDA gives you M.O.R.E.!

Since its introduction 2008, our high-end NINETy-SIX full race bike has been winning competitions all over the world. The bike press raved about this thoroughbred racing machine characterised by no-compromise propulsion, minimum weight and unmatched stiffness. Its prototype has already catapulted our MULTIVAN MERIDA pro rider Ralph Naef to runner up in the World Championship in 2007 and since then, our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM has consistently ridden the NINETy-SIX to success. The 2012 model has been further developed to keep the NINETy-SIX in winning form.

Intensive development work was necessary to continue the evolution of the NINETy-SIX. Our R&D team’s objective was to preserve the excellent NINETy-SIX genes optimised for racing and transfer them to the new model that follows the current trends of the XC World Cup circus. The bike needs speed, agility, excellent traction and neutral suspension performance even on the steepest ascents, as well as enough sensitivity for technically demanding downhill sections It also required optimization for the 2x10 cranksets that are the current racing standard that generally utilise big chain rings and require appropriately adapted mechanical systems.

MERIDA’s Head of Design, Juergen Falke, says “The better is the enemy of the good. With the NINETy-NINE, we have created a racing machine that uses the development potential of its precursor to the full. It was a challenge to improve the weight and stiffness data of our NINETy-SIX – but the successor to the throne achieves new levels of handling and suspension performance.” Main frame, seat and chain stays as well as the rocker link for suspension strut linkage are an intelligent mix of High Modulus (HM), Ultra High Modulus (UHM) and Intermediate (IM) carbon fibres. The reinforcing Double Chamber technology in top and down tube further enhances bending and torsional stiffness. Together with the current 165mm suspension strut that is shorter in comparison to the previous version, the NINETy-NINE frame* achieves an outstanding weight of ultra-light 1.85kg (incl. shock) – in spite of the mighty BB30 bottom bracket and the sensitivity and durable mounting of the complete rear stay in sealed groove ball bearings! The tapered steerer (increasing from 1 1/8 to 1.5”) and the post-mount standard for direct mounting of the rear disc brake are also state-of-the-art. In addition, the NINETy-NINE offers 100mm front and rear suspension travel. Together with the racing-orientated dynamics and a chassis that is completely lockable from the cockpit, this new design is our next attack on the World Cup’s top ranks!

C*At frame size 18”

The suspension’s no-compromise adaption to double cranksets.

A The stylish and functional seat stay layout around the seat tube gives the rear stay its racy look. The transition between top and seat tube is also state-of-the-art.

B The tapered head tube encloses the 100mm fork to improve torsion-resistance and provides maximum steering precision.

C The BB30 bottom bracket generates powerful propulsion. The suspension strut works sensitively and neutrally.

MTBs with 29” wheelsets (Twentyniners) are currently very popular – and deservedly so. Compared with 26” bikes, they offer many advantages with a few limitations that can be compensated for with competent engineeringsolutions and valuable pro rider feedback. With the BIG.NINE series – and in particular the racing rocket BIG.NINE Carbon that has already been tested successfully by the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM – MERIDA has created an amazing 29er whose advantages have already been celebrated enthusiastically in the form of the previous TWENTy-NINE Lite model.

While the journal MountainBIKE headlined “Tester’s Darling” (MountainBIKE 5/11), Bike magazine nominated the MERIDA as “our testers’ favourite bike” (Bike 1/11). Juergen Falke (MERIDA’s Head of Design) has created a bike that caused a sensation right from the start. Only a few features of the celebrated concept needed improvement – a process which utilised all the racing genes of our O.NINE (José Hermida’s World Champion bike) and finally resulted in the BIG.NINE. The frame of top-of-the-range BIG.NINE Carbon weighs less than 1100g – despite internal cable routing, mighty BB30 bottom bracket and the “Tapered Steerer” that increases from 1 1/8 to 1.5”. The very low weight is achieved with the use of cutting-edge carbon fibre technology (e.g. “Nano Matrix Carbon”) that generates an equally ultra-light and ultra-stiff “Structural Element Monocoque”. Construction elements that are subject to extremely high loads (such as the connection between down tube and BB shell) are connected via internal sleeves while “Tube-to-Tube” technology is used for less stressed sections. As a result, the entire construction has an excellent STW (“Stiffness-to-Weight”) ratio – actively supported by “Double Chamber” technology in top and down tube. Double Chamber technology already features in the carbon frames of the O.NINE range providing excellent bending and lateral stiffness.

But even the best basic material is useless if a 29er is not thought-out down to the very last detail. Bigger wheels mean geometry changes that require comprehensive engineering skills. MERIDA solves the problem with a high front end with an extremely short head tube, resulting in maximum pressure on the front wheel. At the same time, the BIG.NINE’s X-Taper head tube improves on the O.NINE’s stiffness while compensating for the longer fork’s less torsion-resistant leverage as well as the bigger (and therefore softer) wheels. Thanks to its Flex Stay seat stays, the BIG.NINE offers excellent comfort that is supplemented by a BB30 section whose stiffness is 20% higher than the already superb O.NINE. As a true piece of engineering art, the BIG.NINE is complemented by asymmetric chain stays, a curved seat tube with direct-mount front derailleur, post-mount disc receivers and 142mm dropouts for floating axles.

C*At frame size 18“

Flex Stay rear stay and 27.2mm seat post provide superior comfort.

A With Direct Mount the derailleur is attached directly to the curved seat tube whose shape offers maximum rear wheel clearance. Due to its torsional stiffness, the BB30 bottom bracket generates powerful propulsion.

B The functional and visually perfect integration of the post-mount disc holder allows rotor sizes up to 160mm w/o adaptor.

C With Double Chamber technology within top and down tubes the BIG.NINE frame is extremely stiff.

For the 2011 season, our All Mountain tourer ONE-TWENTy welcomed a new family member in the form of the ONE-TWENTy Carbon. Our engineers complemented the all-rounder’s broad appeal with additional racing ambitions and sent the bike to the world’s long-distance race courses. The aluminium ONE-TWENTy version had already received a “position in the Marathon starting block” (Bike 1/10) from international bike magazines and the light-weight and stiff carbon model was even described as a “velocity-addicted racing machine” (MountainBIKE 3/11). So our ONE-TWENTy Carbon collected premium results on all the testing grounds it tackled. For the 2012 season, the aluminium version has moved to its next evolutionary stage. Its revised dynamics now differ from the carbon model’s concept. Thus the 2012 ONE-TWENTy further affirms the 120mm category’s suitability for every day usage. It has turned this class of bike into a kind of two-wheeled Swiss army knife especially suited for tour riders.

The differences when compared to our racing-orientated ONE-TWENTy Carbon are obvious at first sight. The hydroformed one-piece top tube, with support against the seat tube, is organic in design and with its special construction, also give large inseam height over a small standover height and therefore a lot of freedom for active cycling. Another result of HFS (Hydroforming System) manufacturing technology is the new seat tube with its directly integrated adaptors for the newly designed rocker link that drives the suspension strut. Compared with the 2011 model, this aluminium element has been slimmed down by an impressive 40% – and now weighs even less than its carbon equivalent from the previous year. All in all, the MERIDA R&D team was able to reduce the ONE-TWENTy’s frame weight to low 2500g* – an improvement that will be appreciated on those long climbs. Together with the Tapered Steerer (increasing from 1 1/8 to 1.5”) and the torsion-resistant BB section, this low total weight ensures an outstanding STW (Stiffness-to-Weight) ratio for an All Mountain tourer.

Less obvious but all the more perceptible, the ONE-TWENTy’s kinematics have been revised for 2012. The chassis has been re-designed for more effective utilisation of all the available suspension travel and the 120mm feels considerably bigger to the rider. The new plus flat steering angle of just 68.5° underlines and enhances the ONE-TWENTy’s suitability for every day riding. On rough downhills, it offers improved running smoothness and tracking stability while lifting the bike’s strengths to a new level. Thanks to its overall geometry, our ONE-TWENTy remains an immensely swift and agile model. In 2012, it is once again the MERIDA model with the broadest range of applications.

A Organic design language – all of a piece and in its shapeliest realization: The low-positioned top tube with a double stay at the seat tube. Thus our ONE-TWENTY performs superbly and has a stylishly modern design.

B Functional design: The tapered head tube (increasing from 1 1/8” to 1.5”) guides the 120mm perfectly for outstanding steering precision.

C No detours: Via the ONE-TWENTY’s direct post-mount receiver, 160mm discs can be installed without an adaptor.

REActOaero racer wIth oUtStandIng coMfort

Cutting-edge aero racing machines that break the visual monotony of conventional frame shapes without losing a premium racer’s strong virtues were a cautious trend at Eurobike 2010. For the 2012 model year they are an inherent part of nearly every road-racing program. At the pole position right from the start the MERIDA REACTO is one of the world’s most universal aero racers with improved levels of comfort in 2012.

After the REACTO’s introduction at Eurobike, there were only positive reactions from the first comparative test (Tour magazine 2/11) at the beginning of 2011. Besides design perfection down to the very last detail and the low frame weight of 1048g*, Juergen Falke’s (MERIDA’s Head of Design) latest success retains its classic virtues. Despite of the aero design, the REACTO outclassed its competitors with levels of stiffness previously found only in traditional racing machines. The leading bike journal RoadBike attested to the MERIDA REACTO’s “precise handling in every situation” (RoadBike 3/11). Obviously, our R&D experts did their homework very well when they used the multi-award-winning SCULTURA EVO as a role model for the derivation of a modern, semi-aero design racing machine. Thanks to the mighty BB30 bottom bracket with its stiffness of 125N/mm and a steerer stiffness of 84N/mm at the tapered head tube (RoadBike 3/11), our REACTO has proven right from the start that its Structure Element Carbon frame incorporating High Modulus (HM) fibres is vastly superior to its competitors. The Double Chamber technology in the down tube enhances the torsional stiffness of the carbon construction once via a transversely integrated rib actively supported by a full-carbon fork with tapered steerer. This bike is designed for pure propulsion and maximum control.

The 2012 REACTO also features an electronic Di2 shifting system and MERIDA’s completely revised S-Flex Comfort seat post. The S-Flex seat post’s window construction, rear-side elastomer and integrated carbon compound spring give levels of comfort offered only by the best 27.2mm slim seat posts at an exceptional net weight of 201g and without any restrictions to the rider’s own weight.

REACTO is probably the most comfortable and complete aero racing machine of the 2012 season.

*At frame size 54cm

C

Rear window: The new “S-Flex” post increases our REACTO’s comfort once again.

A The organic connection between chain stays, top and seat tube is not only attractive, but also stiff and flexible giving perfect symbiosis between propulsion and comfort.

B The rear wheel features aerodynamically clever fitting behind the low-profile seat stay.

C Thanks to clever and elegant clamping, the aero seat post remains completely adjustable.

120mm full-suspension cycles epitomise modern touring bikes – light and with a drivetrain-neutral chassis for easy climbing. Suspension travel and geometry provide reserves for demanding downhills – ideal for applications from tours through low mountain ranges to trips across the Alps. The ONE-TWENTY and the light-weight carbon version ONE-TWENTY Carbon are armed with full-throttle genes.

Introduced last year, the ONE-TWENTY Carbon continues its Marathon trail of success with an almost unaltered configuration. But the aluminium equivalent has been completely revised. The basic idea of this evolution is clear separation of the two models. With its tight, propulsion-orientated geometry, the ONE-TWENTY Carbon is still first choice for long-distance racers. In contrast, our new ONE-TWENTY is now tuned for touring and tackles trails

with greatly improved utilisation of suspension travel. The differences are obvious at first sight – the organically shaped hydroforming aluminium frame looks visually smoother while design and overall weight represent top technical performance. The one-piece top tube nestles solidly against the seat tube. The seat tube, on the other hand, offers integrated adaptors for the ultra-light rocker link between rear stay and suspension strut. The result is a low frame weight of 2500g* combined with superb stiffness and equally sensitive and neutral dynamics. With its touring-friendly angles, the new ONE-TWENTY is still agile while offering superior running smoothness. In other words, stability and safety for fast and challenging downhills.

Redefining XC and Marathon racing and featuring a 2x10 crankset, no other 100mm full-suspension bike has been developed in a more thorough way than our brand-new racing machine – the NINETY-NINE. After several years development, the close cooperation between the MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAM and our R&D experts has resulted in a successor for our state-of-the-art racing NINETY-SIX. The new light-weight NINETY-NINE is ready to ride into the bike world’s top ranks with a stiffer BB section and a significantly more efficient chassis.

Thanks to its X-Taper head tube, the 100mm front end ensures superb directional stability and stiffness. The 99mm rear section is sensitive and drivetrain-neutral. Combined with geometry that is optimised for propulsion, these features turn our NINETY-NINE into a thoroughbred racer. This is

underlined by a chassis that can be locked out via handlebar remotes and also features frontal lowering* for the essential edge in sprints and enough front wheel pressure on steep ascents. The main frame, rocker link and rear stay are full-carbon elements that facilitate the struggle against the clock and other competitors by saving as much weight as possible – the range topping 18” frame NINETY-NINE Carbon Team-D weighs just 8.9kg**! But our new bike doesn‘t just measure up on the scales, its chassis performance sets new benchmarks in the 100mm category. The chassis is optimised for 2x10 drivetrains suitable for racing and, thanks to M.O.R.E. technology, works the same at all frame sizes. Moreover, the frame is reinforced via Double Chamber profiles while its high BB stiffness of 80 N/mm saves every bit of sprint power.
