President’s Message

Mark W. Ford Club President

It seems as if each month within the President’s Message I somewhere underscore the importance of attracting new members to Meridian Hills Country Club. And each month your Board of Directors peers into the future, reflects on the past, and makes its best effort to evaluate present membership initiatives. It has been some seven or eight years since Meridian Hills Country Club had a membership “waiting list” and yet we have bucked the national trend of a significant downturn in membership. We believe our success here is based on a strong inclination not to undermine the Meridian Hills “brand.”

While many clubs slash initiation fees to near zero and offer all kinds of convoluted membership deals, Meridian Hills avoids this herd mentality. Rather, our objective is to build more and more value into our membership by providing superior facilities, food, and service. Attracting and retaining great members and great families has been the end result of this strategy because Meridian Hills membership continues to really mean something. To a person we should take great pride in what we have here and tirelessly promote our advantage.

You also may be interested to know that our Club’s financial position half-way through our fiscal year is extremely positive by any measure. Financial strength certainly sets us apart from other clubs and should be considered a hard earned asset worth a great deal to our future. There are some not very “sexy” maintenance projects upcoming (a new roof/membrane for a part of the clubhouse, substantial repairs to our outdoor staircase on the east side and an investigation of considerable dampness appearing along the north wall of the men’s locker room) and these will be addressed sooner rather than later. Plainly, a healthy balance sheet makes these necessary maintenance items a bit easier to act upon.

Finally, as the weather picks up and improves so shall the use of our facilities. Just this last week at or near dusk, I saw three children less than 8 or 9 years old playing on and around the 9th green and within less than a foot or so of the pond to the east guarding that green. Great kids – really bad idea – and no parents anywhere in the vicinity. I apologize in advance if this reads too much like a curmudgeon, but this simply has to stop and stop now before we have a real tragedy. The rules are very clear and perhaps we all should revisit these rules anew. And “No” the Meridian Hills staff is not responsible for or a substitute for appropriate supervision as set forth in the rules. Again, sorry for this rant here – it just needs to be said . . . apparently, over and over!

Our Newest Additions

Hello again and welcome to another great season at MHCC. May is a great time of year in Indy and at Meridian Hills. Although rained out, the ladies and men have just completed their opening day events and Ludo is geared up for another great season on the courts. Later this month, Scott Fenstermaker and the pool staff will prepare the pool for our Memorial weekend opening. Please mark your calendar for the “Memorial Day Rib Night” poolside with great food and activities planned for the kids.

Back this year, Elaine, Jon, Daniel and the rest of the Kid’s Club staff have many exciting activities planned this summer for your children. Again this year, the Kids Club Staff have several off site field trips for the kids and several “Mom’s Day Out” afternoons planned. I hope that each of you with little ones will take advantage of these terrific opportunities. Turn to page 14 of the Newsette to see the fields trips we have planned for this summer.

The staff and I are looking forward to a great summer that’s filled with sun and fun at MHCC. I hope that each of you makes a commitment to use your club and all it has to offer to its fullest. Our entire staff is eager to see you, your family, and your guests enjoy a round of golf, a swim at the pool, dinner in one of our beautiful dining rooms, a few games of tennis, a workout at the fitness center, or whatever you enjoy the most at Meridian Hills.

Just a reminder to mark your calendars for all of the special events planned throughout the upcoming months. We continue striving to provide you with a variety of new events, in addition to our traditional offerings. Our goal is to have something for everyone.

As we begin our busy season, I would like to remind members of a couple of important Club rules and recommendations. Please exercise caution in leaving valuable items in your vehicles. Each year we experience a couple of unfortunate car break ins. Typically they involve a purse, briefcase, laptop, golf clubs or similar valuable item which is left in plain view through the window of your vehicle. The Club is not responsible for damage or loss which occurs under these circumstances. We thank you for your cooperation.

We always enjoy seeing so many of our younger members with children utilizing the dining rooms, and would like to encourage and enforce consistent rules for all members. Just a reminder, as our president mentioned, that children are to be under continual supervision of an adult while at the Club. For your child’s safety and wellbeing, children are not allowed to roam throughout the clubhouse, parking lot, club grounds or on the golf course at any time unless accompanied by an adult. Please help our management staff by adhering to this important Club rule.

We look forward to an exciting summer here at MHCC and hope you will let us know what we can do to make every experience you have here at the Club an enjoyable one.

Sincerely, Kevin

Membership Update

George Farra Membership Committee

Chairman

Are you a Social, Clubhouse or Tennis member who has an interest in Golf?

The Board of Directors created a program for existing Social, Clubhouse and Tennis members to convert to Resident Golf class by June 15, 2011. Apply the initiation fee you’ve already paid as a credit toward the Resident Golf initiation fee of $30,000.00 and spread the payments over 10 years without interest. For those members who also are a descendant, including adopted children and stepchildren, of a current Resident Golf member, you may take advantage of this program at the Legacy Resident Golf rate of $25,000.00 with the payments spread equally over 10 years without interest. Resident Golf dues are $490.00 per month plus Hawk Project Dues of $100.00 per month. For more information or to take advantage of this program, please contact Director of Membership, Lisa Strachota, before June 15, 2011 at (317) 860-1556.

The ultimate testimony of a Club’s distinction is defined by a full complement of members and the Club needs your help to fulfill that goal. We as members represent various organizations and interests in the Community and we all know people within those groups who aren’t members of Meridian Hills. The Board of Directors and Membership Committee would like your support with our Membership initiative; you can begin by inviting your friends, neighbors, colleagues or anyone you know who would enjoy the Meridian Hills experience and have an interest in becoming a member. The Membership Committee would like you to show off your Club and entertain your friends at these upcoming events:

Spring Showcase Prospective Member Open House

Complimentary Kid’s Club will be available for members and guests who make a reservation for the event.

Please contact Director of Membership, Lisa Strachota, with your guest’s name, so we may personalize their time with us during the Showcase.

Jim Hess Golf Course

Superintendent

To the Meridian Hills Membership,

As I begin my eighth season as your Golf Course Superintendent, I look forward to seeing all of the members and their guests returning to the Club to enjoy another great year of golf. In the past seven years, the golf course has improved greatly and again sets the bench mark for other clubs to measure themselves. I would like to personally thank the entire membership for their continued support. I would also like to take this opportunity to share something that you can do while playing and practicing to keep your golf course in the shape you have become accustom too.

Please return carts to cart path at green posts. I will be introducing cart crossing posts on all fairways to let you know when to return to the cart path. The area around the green is very much in play. No one likes to hit chip shots out of some ones tire track.

Please always fix your ball mark on the green. My crew and I try to fix as many ball marks as we can each morning. Often though, the next day is too late to properly fix the mark before permanent damage has occurred to the grass plant leaving an unsightly brown mark. Please remember to push towards the center of the ball mark with the tool and never pry upward.

Please always replace your divot. In our climate we have a good chance that the divot will heal if replaced immediately after taking it. The sand should only be used if the divot explodes or is irretrievable. The sand should only be used on fairways. There is grass seed combined with the sand that I do not want introduced to any other playing surfaces.

Please leave space between your divots on the practice range. When divots are taken one on top of another it creates a large patch of missing turf. This takes ten times longer for that area to recover for use again. By simply leaving some space between your divots you can accelerate the recovery time needed for that area to be usable again.

Please pick up broken tee’s on the tee box. Leaving your broken tee’s on the tee box is just bad housekeeping. It also causes me to use man hours to pick them up every day when I could be using the labor for something else.

I know the membership at MHCC wants to do everything they can to help ensure quality golf course conditions. That is why it is my pleasure to serve as your Golf Course Superintendent. My staff and I would again like to thank you for your support and with you success throughout this golf season.

Sincerely,Jim HessGolf Course Superintendent
