Learning Japanese language for us is really a tough challenge but with the help of the NIHONGO Partners (Aika-chan and Chiya-chan), we were able to get through. When they told our class that we were being invited to perform a song with them at Shangri- La Plaza Mall, we agreed right away as this would express our gratitude and the fruit of our study of the language. Turns out, it wasn’t just our class that was invited to sing but other classes of Japanese too, so we met a lot of people for the first time when we started rehearsing for the piece. The song we were to perform was ハナミズキ (Hanamizuki), a heartwarming ballad about the singer’s friend who was killed by the 9/11 attack; about a love that transcends life and death. When the day came, we were enthusiastic and nervous, especially when we met and performed with The Japan Foundation, Manila supports Kana Art Competition (Kana Com), a competition of graphic design using only the Japanese characters such as Hiragana and Katakana. The JFM conducted workshops four times, twice in NCR and twice in Cebu. Even if they did not have any knowledge in writing Japanese characters at all, participants were able to enjoy the Kana Com workshop since they only needed to make designs out of the Japanese characters. The days of our lives are like flowers from a dogwood. One of its buds that had left a mark on our lives would be the 17th day of February, 2018.

Learning Japanese language for us is really a tough challenge but with the help of the NihONgO Partners (Aika-chan and Chiya-chan), we were able to get through. When they told our class that we were being invited to perform a song with them at Shangri-La Plaza Mall, we agreed right away as this would express our gratitude and the fruit of our study of the language.

We sounded stale by ourselves but with her, the song came life; we felt alive when we were singing and dancing with all the people. Their smiles, our smiles were unforgettable. At that moment the song hit our hearts, wishing what we felt that day and the people we met would stay with us for a hundred years.

The 27 th Philippines Nihongo Teachers’ Forum, entitled “場面のある文法導入 Do you do Dounyuu? including [SiTUATiONS] in our Dounyuu”, was successfully held at the JiCA Philippines Office Auditorium last May 26, 2018 (Satruday). More than 60 Nihongo Teachers from various institutions gathered to listen and reflect about Dounyuu and with much enthusiasm, the participants came up with their own “Dounyuu” for their class.

Cabancalan National high School is only the second largest school in Mandaue City yet, we are fortunate and blessed enough to be a part of the Special Program for Foreign Language (SPFL)- NihONgO. Teaching Nihongo is not that easy especially if you are not into watching anime or even reading comic books. however, we find some ways to make it easier with the help of enTree method we learned from trainings.

Since we are both language teachers handling English and Filipino, we often use some strategies or approaches related to communicative language. Evidently, we use “Think-Pair and Share”, groupings, pair work, and do some role playings in every Nihongo class that we have. in addition to that, we also use the materials given to us and follow all the things written in the lesson plan which serve as our guide. Through applying these things we believe that we can easily impart to students the things about Japan, its culture, vocabularies and even

Or even discussed some topics to learners who came from different schools in the Philippines and from Japan? Japanese Speakers’ Forum 2018 Philippines with the theme Halina be an エコじん (Ecojin)! Let’s RESOLVE garbage problem: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, has given me an unforgettable experience.

The abovementioned forum was a three-day forum held at Robbinsdale Residences, Quezon City last January 24- 26, 2018. it was a National Forum for high School Students and Teachers under the Special Program in Foreign Language Nihongo by the Japan Foundation, Manila, and the Kamenori Foundation, in corporation with the Department of Education / Bureau of Curriculum Development and Quezon City SWMD. There were 36 high school students

the sentence patterns we use in communication. Moreover, to make the learning of students more exciting and meaningful, we invite Nihonjins from different organizations to have a culture session every quarter of the year.

Aside from the varied activities in our Nihongo class, we also use “enTree book”. This entrée book helps us to track the progress of each student. Through using this, it helps students to be more organized with their things and outputs. it is also a way of enjoying while making their entrée book. As a reward, at the end of the school year, we give awards to those who have creative and well-organized work.

We do believe that applying all these will make every session worth it, and will definitely be able to appreciate every one’s worth.

The enTree method is a masterpiece. it is geared towards attainment of 21st century skills.

in enTree, we stimulate students’ curiosity through games, role-plays, showing videos and photos, sensible questions or doing any activitiy that would springboard towards the main topic. Objectives of the day’s lesson are then presented to guide students on what to expect. Past lesson is always reviewed during the day’s lesson and a smooth connection of the previous and the current lessons are established. Next is the “Language Portion” where the Nihongo expressions are taught. For example, for the “hiragana Characters”, instead of showing students how the characters look, enTree makes use of its teaching materials, the “hiragana in

from 19 Schools in the Philippines and 12 Japanese high school students from 12 schools in Japan. 21 teachers were also present in the said forum together with the core members and Japan Foundation Staff.

Like last year’s forum the fieldwork is the highlight of the forum. The participants were tasked to conduct interviews about solid waste management of barangay Payatas and holy Spirit in Quezon City, Philippines. Unlike last year, i just participated in the Teachers' Program and did keen observation of the core members' tasks and analyzed some of the activities in the said forum. i was also given a light task which is to teach the farewell song to the student participants.

For this year’s forum, i define it as a quite complex task not to mention the outputs which was to make a logic tree and to do a jingle. The idea that i am no longer a participant brings me chills. Now,

Once the Nihongo expressions are given, enTree develops several meaningful and fun practice-activities that encourage students to apply the newly-learned expressions. This fosters collaboration, another 21st century skill.

Next, the teacher facilitates the students to the discussion of Japanese culture. With this, students speak their minds about relevant issues. Not only do we discuss Japanese culture in this portion, but also, we see to it that our students’ understanding of our very own Filipino culture is enriched. After that, fun-filled activities are used to practice the newly-learned expressions. enTree always ends the class with a reflection where students write their learnings for the day.

Since the start, i have always admired how the lessons in enTree are being developed. Learning

the language and at the same time transforming the students into someone capable of facing the competitive world in the 21st century.

i’ve always been hugely impressed with the enTree lesson plans prepared by the JFM that’s why i use it as a bible in most of my teacher-student engagements in class. The plans are structured and well-thought of and are very K-12 in nature as most of the activities require individual and group participation making the sessions student-centered. This is the heart of the K-12 curriculum that EnTree has perfectly infused into the program. What makes it more engaging for the students is that each lesson concludes with a reflection writing which serves both as a wrap up and a take home point for the students.

having quite a limited background in Japanese language, employing very religiously and strictly the JFM’s enTree way of teaching ensures that i am not short-changing my students. Days before i meet my students i make sure that i do my homework – read the lesson, research on google and download materials from YouTube so that anything i can’t supply, the resources i have can fill in the gaps. Of course, my being an English teacher helps me

well in the lecture because anything i couldn’t say in Japanese i communicate in English. Also, i ask the help of the NihONgO partner on matters that are of importance to the stimulation of the lesson. For example, when i discussed the lesson on table manners after my discussion and after having shown the students a video about how to use chopsticks, i asked Ken sensei to prepare a game he calls peanuts-eating relay using chopsticks which was really fun for the students.

here’s what i discovered that gives me ease and comfort in teaching enTree. i prepare a PowerPoint presentation in all the sessions so that by the time i’m in front of my students what i see on the slides will help me remember what i’m supposed to say. And more importantly, i’m sure i will not be missing anything from the plans. What i just do is rewrite on the board some very important expressions for students’ emphasis and memorization.

i am facilitating and conversing with the participants not only in English but also in Nihongo. i admit that i didn’t experience much dilemma in facilitating a big class or a seminar with a huge crowd as much as i remembered. But honestly, the forum was a life changing one. At one corner i reflected whether i am fit to be part of the core group. i knew that in order to be confident in this forum i need to level up my proficiency in Nihongo. Though i am not forced to speak in Nihongo but i realized that i have to do something about my situation. Fortunately, one of the topics this year was the making of Solution Tree which was so timely for me because i was able to apply it in solving my problem with regards to my Nihongo proficiency.

Foundation which is to further enhance 21st century skills have been achieved this time! i am looking forward to facilitate in next year’s JS Forum with a better version of me using Nihongo with confidence.

i am thankful because i am challenged in this forum. i am now helping myself to be a problem solver through plotting solutions on how to improve my Nihongo proficiency. i am also encouraging everybody to do the same. Definitely, the target of JFM and the Kamenori

if you are asked “Please make your loved ones hAPPY by using only 20 pesos.”, how would you do it?? The first thing you will have to think of is “Who is the most important person for me? is it my mom? My wife? My children? Next, you might think, “Only 20 pesos? i cannot buy a good gift with this!”

in fact, this is a segment featured on a Japanese TV program. in that program, people were given a budget of 500 yen. Obviously, this amount is not enough to buy a gift, so you must think of a way to utilize the money wisely. it will make you think again, “is buying something the only way to please your loved ones?”

in the TV program, a daughter bought a rose and wrote a letter for her mother. it was the first time for her to write a letter for her mom. her mother looked really hAPPY!

in another case, a middle-aged man took his old mother to a public bath. She often went to that public bath with her husband. But after her husband’s death, nobody took her to the bath. The man took his mom to the bath and said “i’ll take a bath after you”. But he didn’t

There may be times that a student makes an unworkable plan. Students must be able to put it into practice just by using their 20 pesos.So, the teachers should remind the students by asking:“When will you do it?” “how will you do it?” “Can you really do it?”When i did this activity with my students, everyone gave a very heartwarming presentation, and some students even took action right after

the class.The technique is for the teacher to make his own plan and present it first to the students. This way, they will be able to grasp how to proceed

with the task given to them.So, let me ask you again “how will you make your loved ones hAPPY just by using 20 pesos?”

Let’s apply it in teaching Nihongo!

20 PESOS HAPPY!because he only had 500 yen which was not enough for two persons. it must have been memorable for his mom as she was given a chance to remember the old days with her husband.

Let me share my ideas.For me, the most important persons

now are my wife and son.if i buy an ice cream worth 20 pesos,

i can make my son happy, but it is not enough for my wife.

if i play with my son, he will be happy. My wife can take pictures of us, upload them on social media, get many likes, and so she will also be happy.

So, it would be best to use the 20 pesos to play with my son.

Maybe i can accomplish this task by making a plan as below.

“Oshaberi Salon” is a free event for Nihon enthusiasts held at the Japan Foundation, Manila. During each session, the participants try to complete a task on their own or collaborate with others using Nihongo. Three new titles written by the award-winning, internationally acclaimed Japanese writer – haruki Murakami have been added to the JFM Library shelves.

Men Without Women by haruki MurakamiThe novel written in Japanese was published in 2014 and translated in English in

2017 for international release. Since then, the book gained a lot of commendations and good reviews from readers around the world.

This work of fiction is a collection of seven short stories about the lives of men who have lost their women and find themselves alone. Know the stories of different men brought together in this contemporary classic novel.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by haruki MurakamiThis is another work of fiction and Murakami’s thirteenth novel.

Within the first week following release in 2013 it became an instant hit in Japan and sold a million copies. it was also an instant New York Times Bestseller when it was released worldwide in 2014.

The story is about a man rejected by his four high school friends and who had to face adulthood alone. his life was never too easy and only a journey into the past was necessary to mend his present life.

This book is for both the new and experienced reader.

What I Talk About When I Talk About Running: A Memoir by haruki MurakamiThe book is haruki Murakami’s memoir of running, and how he was introduced

to writing while training for the New York Marathon. Also, Murakami adds his personal insight and philosophy throughout the book.
