2019
Dear Parents, Carers & Friends,
What a busy, cold and windy fortnight we’ve
had with snow, wind and the usual myriad of
BPS events!
Congratulations to our Stage 2 and 3 Basketball teams who did so well at the gala day in week 4.
Amazing performances, wins and sportsmanship. Thank you to their coach, Mrs Gillian and to
Mrs Harris and her sons for their expert training in the lead up.
We were fortunate with the weather for our Athletics carnival and many thanks to our canteen,
parent supporters and helpers.
Monday 19th saw a cricket gala day and girls’ soccer gala day. At both
events our Blackheath Public School students played with great gusto and
fairness and the efforts of our parent helpers were much appreciated.
Our Junior students performed at the Narragunnawali Festival of Music, singing like birds and
giving us all goosebumps. Well done to everyone involved and to our wonderful Mrs Lanyon who
conducted.
Many of the teachers were having flashbacks last Friday night at the
80’s Disco. Great fun, great exercise and hopefully great fundraising
happened for our P&C and the Canteen. Chris is in the market for a
new oven for the canteen so every dollar helps.
Wakakirri was on Monday night and we were so proud of our students.
The way they coped with all day rehearsals and the waiting around was
exemplary, but their performance was absolutely magnificent.
Congratulations on receiving the ‘Best T-Shirt Design’, ‘Best Individual
Costume Design’ and ‘Participation’ awards. Many people assisted to
make this experience so positive for our students and this will be
covered in the next newsletter but my most sincere thanks to the
incredible staff, parents and community members for their time, effort
and dedication to our students.
Best wishes to our Stage 3 students and staff who headed to Canberra today. Have a wonderful
adventure.
Please be advised we adopt a cost recovery model for incursions and excursions. The school is
required to pay service providers even if your child(ren) is unable to attend on the day and
regrettably, we cannot provide a credit or refund.
Warm Regards, Jane Davies Principal
FROM THE PRINCIPAL 2020 enrolments are now open. If you have
children, or neighbours with children, who
intend to enrol their child here please let them
know. We have fabulous Kinder Orientation

Be part of National Child Protection Week (1 – 7 September)
Children do best when life is on an even keel and their parents have the support they need.
By being kind to parents, supporting family-friendly policies, and building connected communities, we’re all helping to give
Australia’s children the best start in life.
National Child Protection Week is all about celebrating the many ways – big and small – that everyone in the community can
make a difference in the life of a child.
Most importantly, we need to recognise that parenting is like sailing a boat; it takes skill and practice, anyone can encounter
rough waters from time to time, and we can all do our bit to help build the safe harbours and lighthouses that all families need.
This National Child Protection Week (1 – 7 September), we’re making it easier than ever for everyone to get involved in creating
better lives for children.
To learn more visit www.napcan.org.au.
The Blue Mountains Coalition Against Violence and Abuse (CAVA) will be holding a stall at Blackheath Community Markets on
Sunday 1st September, 9am – 1 pm with free activities for children and information for parents and caregivers.

Narragunnawali Festival of Music Congratulations to
our Year 2 Choir who performed, with other choirs from Lawson to Lithgow, in last
week’s Narragunnawali Music Festival held at Katoomba High School. You were
wonderful ambassadors for our school and helped make the concert so special. Congratulations also to Georgia Masters
(voice, Year 5), Julia Ross (flute, Year 5) and the school band who performed individual items in the Festival. A special thank
you to Mark O’Connor (Dad of Sam in Year 5) and Ramon Menon (guitar teacher) who accompanied the choir so expertly.
AMEB Music Performance Exams At the recent round of AMEB Music exams two students
received exceptional grades that deserve special mention. Ginger Foster received an ‘A+’ in
Recorder, 2nd Grade and Archie Helm received an ‘A’ in Piano, Preliminary Grade. Both
students achieved these fine results through practise and dedication. Well done!

MUSIC NEWS
On Friday 16th August more than a third of our Stage 3 students went to Sydney for the CBCA Book of
the Year Awards, accompanied by Mr Morris and Ms Lamond. Once we arrived, we listened to the
inspiring Sue Whiting talk about her book ‘Missing’ and watched the amazing Jules Faber draw people.
Miette Hoekstra from BPS gave a book review for the book ‘Leave Taking’. Everyone watching waited
nervously for the awards to be announced. The picture book category winner was ‘Cicada’ by Shaun Tan, the early childhood
winner was ‘Tricky’s Bad Day’ by Alison Lester, ‘His Name Was Walter’ by Emily Rodda won the younger readers category,
‘Between Us’ by Clare Atkins won the older readers category, ‘Sorry Day’ by Carol Vass won the Eve Pownall Award for
information books, and ‘Grandma Z’ by Daniel Gray-Barnett won the award for new illustrators. And that’s on top of all the
honour books there were on the day! Finally it was time to go home after a long day. We were the quietest school excursion
ever on the train on the way home. It must be because we were all enjoying our new books so much. It was a really fun day!

BASKETBALL GALA DAY Blackheath Public School entered four teams into the Annual Primary School Basketball Gala Day at Katoomba on Wednesday the 14th of August.
Two Stage Two teams and two Stage Three teams donned their green singlets and hit the courts with a spirit of fun and sportsmanship.
Excitement grew as team after team won their games and the Grand Finals were in sight. In typical Blackheath style, as players were waiting for their games, we supported our teams by enthusiastically cheering from the side lines.
All of this excitement and hard
work resulted in three undefeated teams winning their Grand Final and one team coming runner up in their Grand Final! Thank you to all of the team Managers and parents who supported on the day! Well done to everyone!

MATHS WORKSHOP
Keen parents joined Mr Kelly and Mr Yeong for an hour of maths on Wednesday, 21st
August to explore a range of concepts, skip counting, fact families, inverse operations,
mental strategies, problem solving and working mathematically. Different ideas were
shared to support students’ mastery of maths skills.
STAMPS Do you throw away your used stamps? If so, please tear off the stamp and bring it
to Sue in the school office for donation to the Red Cross. Money raised by the
foundation is used to support under-privileged families in Australia
ILLNESS AT SCHOOL AND NOTIFYIYING Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhoea, they must not have vomited or had runny
stools for a minimum of 24 hours (even if they feel better) as they may still be infectious. Staff have only the best interests of our students at heart when we ask this so as to avoid outbreaks in classrooms. We also have children with compromised immune systems at school for whom contracting these illnesses can have serious repercussions. It is important for these students that they participate actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. Towards this end another major concern is if these children were to develop measles, chickenpox, whooping cough or influenza so I seek your cooperation in preventing this situation.
If your child has, or may have, measles, chicken pox or other infectious illness, I would ask that you please: 1. Do not send them to school. 2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible. 3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm diagnosis if possible. Thanking you in anticipation, Jane Davies Principal
A gentle reminder that all payments MUST be in by the
due date on the note. Owing to our Department of
Education system we cannot process money that comes in
after the closing date. You may find that the online payment may seem to work as this is the bank ’s system but the money
cannot be processed for that event and will be put into credit for your future use. If finance is an issue PLEASE complete the
assistance form BEFORE the due date. You are more than welcome to reimburse us after the date.
PAYMENTS
Sue and Rhonda like to keep some spare uniform
items in the office and at the moment they are short
on tracksuit pants, especially in the smaller sizes, and large jumpers. Any donations will be gratefully be accepted.
SECOND HAND UNIFORMS
Dear Parents/Carers,
A number of students have lost their labelled polar
fleeces. Would you please check your child’s jumpers
and polar fleeces to make sure they have not inadvertently picked up another childs.
Thank you for your cooperation.
LOST PROPERTY
On Monday 19th August representatives from Stage 2
and 3 went to the Cricket Gala Day. We all had a lot of
fun. There were 4 teams entered in the competition
from Blackheath Public School, and each team was able to play 4 enjoyable full games of cricket. One of the teams even scored
a massive 264 runs. When we weren’t playing a match, we got to practise our cricket skills on an inflatable pitch (or buy a
sausage sizzle or
lollies from the
canteen).

CRICKET GALA DAY
I would like to personally thank my amazing team for achieving this accolade! We have all worked hard to ensure that we achieved a great result, and we did! To achieve this result we needed; At least 3⁄4 (75%) of the menu to be ”Everyday” foods and drinks – ours is 87%
No more than 1⁄4 (25%) of the menu to be “Occasional” foods and drinks – ours is 13%, this is made up of the corn chips, salsa, our homemade pies, & sausage rolls. Whilst we can still sell corn chips and salsa, these items aren ’t to be displayed on the front counter.
All the “Occasional” packaged foods and drinks in our canteen have a Health Star Rating of 3.5 Stars and above. Portion limits to meet requirements of “Occasional” foods and drinks and “Everyday” flavoured milk and juices on our
menu.

SOCCER GALA DAY
On Monday 19th August, a Stage 2 and a Stage 3
team of girls took part in the Blue Mountains Girls
Football Gala Day at Pitt Park. Despite the cold and
hail our girls showed great enthusiasm and
developing football skills. This is a relatively new
gala day for the mountains and is growing in
popularity every year. We will be there next year!

The Tell Them From Me parent survey (Term 3, 2019)
This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them
From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents
and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at
school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and
parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school
make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will
typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted
between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are
very much appreciated.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au or
https://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Parent_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T3_2019.pdf. The
survey is available in 23 languages.
