Mermaid – The Year-long Festival
Welcome to the summer season at Mermaid Arts Centre, where our year-long festival continues rain, hail or shine!
This season we continue to develop partnerships throughout the county and community, in particular with the Synge Summer School, Killruddery House, Bray Youth Service and Bray Summerfest.
We start the new season on a football-themed note with The Parting Glass by Dermot Bolger. The performance will be followed by an in-conversation between Dermot Bolger and Patrick Lonergan from the Synge Summer School. A definite date for your diary!
Children will certainly not be bored this summer, as Mermaid provides a wide range of workshops taking in felt-making and mono-printing, pottery, theatre and dance, not to mention High School Musical on 31 July.
A particular highlight this season is the fantastic theatre dining experience Faulty Towers in September hosted by Mermaid and Betelnut Café. For two evenings only, Mermaid Arts Centre will be at the mercy of Basil, Sybil and Manuel… Please book early to avoid being disappointed and whatever you do, don’t mention the war!
Another theatre highlight, Little Gem comes to Mermaid for a five-night run mid-September. This is a superbly entertaining production and one to recommend to friends and family.
We hope you will be able to join us for our free outdoor Friday lunchtime concerts in July in association with Bray Summerfest on the Plaza in front of Mermaid. Thank you to all of our audiences, friends and supporters. We look forward to welcoming you to Mermaid this season.
With best wishes from Nora and the Mermaid team.

Set on the infamous night when Thierry Henry caused Ireland’s exit from this year’s World Cup. From this moment in Ireland’s recent turbulent history, Dermot Bolger has used Henry’s sleight of hand as a metaphor for the speedy deception experienced by people in Ireland in these post boom years. He infuses The Parting Glass with humour and mischievous Dublin wit. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, Bolger sweeps his audience along with a poignant and moving monologue, delivered with great fun and tenderness by actor Ray Yeates. Post-performance in-conversation between Dermot Bolger and Dr. Patrick Lonergan, Synge Summer School
Match is a duet that takes place on the pitch in Croke Park. The film is dynamic and physical as well as intimate and haunting. It is a contest where, as in relationships, sports and battle, one emerges stronger and survives longer than the other. The film was commissioned as part of RTÉ’s inaugural Dance on the Box season, a partnership initiative with An Chomhairle Ealaíon/The Arts Council of Ireland assisted by Filmbase to stimulate the creation of dance for screen in Ireland. It was conceived and choreographed by Fearghus Ó Conchúir and directed by Emmy award-winning director, Dearbhla Walsh with music by Julie Feeney. The film was produced by Willie White for Project Arts Centre.

The setting is Southern California and our moment in time is officially the early sixties. We meet George Falconer (Colin Firth), a gay college professor, as he learns that his lover Jim (Matthew Goode) has died in a car wreck. Grief overwhelms him, and his ‘invisible status’ in society begins to close in again. Suicide seems the best way out. But a mad night with Charley (Julianne Moore), his best girlfriend from England, and the unexpected attentions of an angora-sweater-clad young man make George think twice.
Dir: Tom Ford. Starring: Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode and Nicholas Hoult.Colin Firth nominated for Best Actor at 2010 Academy Awards

For a week this summer, Mermaid will convert its Auditorium into a screening room, bringing photographs by renowned international photographers to Mermaid’s cinema screen. One of football’s greatest asset is its ability to offer the fan a true window to the world crossing racial, political, religious and social divides. Since the 1930s photographers from the Magnum Photos agency have taken an interest in the football world, documenting its social context, its supporters, the premier teams and grass root level. In light of the 2010 World Cup, Magnum Photos presents a selection of images capturing the game we love in their inimitable style.
Don’t miss this great chance to see Wicklow’s Luán Parle join Clive Barnes as part of their intensive double-header tour of Ireland. They will perform separate sets (Luán with her full band), whilst also joining each other on stage. Two concerts for the price of one! This promises to be a very special evening of music from two of Ireland’s finest talents. Luán Parle is an established, popular and critically acclaimed artist with a constantly growing International fan base. As a musician, Barnes is highly regarded as one of the finest performers on the roots circuit, a reputation solidified by the lyrical and song writing prowess on his latest collection of songs.

This multi-award winning distinctive documentary has a deceptively simple conceit that manages to deliver an honest and revealing insight into life in Ireland. Inspired by the story of his mother’s life, Ken Wardrop presents interviews with women from across the midlands of Ireland. Starting with some in their nappies and ending in a nursing home, the women of gradually increasing ages welcome viewers into their own homes, and from these living rooms, kitchens and hallways, they talk about their experiences, about their relationships and attitudes towards men. These women are, by turns, frank, funny, gracious, perceptive and moving, and collectively, the interviews form the narrative of life, from cradle to grave, in an inventive and original way.

Balancing a successful professional career with a full and happy private life is a familiar challenge for most. Here, director Mia Hansen-Løve takes this commonplace dilemma and turns it into a loving but bittersweet portrait of a family whose world comes apart under these conflicting strains. Grégoire (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) is a happily wedded father of three young girls, an independent film producer who somehow manages to juggle the never-ending demands of his company with his domestic responsibilities. When his wife, Sylvia (Chiara Caselli), insists that he join the family on an Italian holiday, Grégoire finds he can no longer maintain any sane balance. Mia Hansen-Løve awarded the Special Jury Prize of Un Certain Regard at 2009 Cannes Film Festival

You get to learn very simple taiko rhythms and as a bonus get a full aerobic body workout. Movements are dynamic upper and lower body movements based upon the unique Tokara style of taiko drumming. Rhythms are extremely simple and fun, allowing all participants to get a good full-body workout.

Painting clothes, throwing stones at kangaroos, sniffing glue: that’s all life has in store for two aboriginal teenagers who try to flee their stuffy village, but life elsewhere turns out to be not much better. Delilah, who is not easily frightened, earns just enough by painting clothing to buy food for her grandma. When she’s not painting, she pushes her grandma in a wheelchair to the doctor. Samson is worse off: in order to suppress his hunger, he sniffs glue. When, after a tragic turn, the two finally dare flee their village, a local viaduct seems to be a suitable springboard to the rest of the world. This year’s Australian Oscar submission. A finely graded legal thriller. Taking the atrocities of the Bosnian wars as its point of inquiry, Hans-Christian Schmid’s film weighs the legacy of the past against the promise of the future and dramatises, the process by which a balance may be struck between the two. Hannah Maynard (Kerry Fox), is a UN prosecutor charged with bringing alleged war criminal Goran Duric (Drazen Kuhn) to justice. While poking around, she stumbles on a fresh witness, Mira (Anamaria Marinca), a Bosnian now living in Berlin who, though she wants nothing more than to forget the past, agrees, after a little prodding, to testify.

A cool and firmly ambitious film from Austria’s Jessica Hausner, Lourdes is an accomplished work which radiates intelligence. Setting her story on a religious pilgrimage to the French Catholic shrine sets many expectations, but Hausner neither belittles nor reveres her subjects. Around 1.5 million people visit the Marian shrine every year, many disabled, nearly all looking for a miracle. But wheelchair-bound Christine (Testud), a rigid MS sufferer, is here ‘because it’s the only way I get out’ she confesses to young volunteer Maria (Lea Seydoux). They both notice Order of Malta officer Kuno (Bruno Todeschini), and are in turn all noticed by strict, otherworldly head nun Cecile (Elina Lowensohn). A controversial tale of dysfunction, this brilliant and bizarre film is superbly acted and icily controlled. A film about the essential strangeness of something society insists is the benchmark of normality: the family, a walled city state with its own autocratic rule and untellable secrets. In the Greek countryside, a wealthy middle-aged businessman has a handsome house, a quietly submissive wife, and three children in their twenties. But something is very wrong. The children, as becomes chillingly clear, are infantilised: they have never been permitted to leave the family compound and have been trained in obedience like dogs. As harrowing as it is humorous, Giorgos Lanthimos’ award-winning journey to a family’s heart of darkness is unflinchingly detailed, thought-provoking fare.
The polished rooms of a Milanese villa ignite with anxious activity as the wealthy industrial family, the Recchis, prepare to celebrate the birthday of their patriarch. It is an occasion designed to ensconce family traditions—the handsome grandson, Edoardo, introduces his new girlfriend; his sister presents another piece of her artwork; and the grandfather, knowing this is his last birthday, names the successor to his empire. As the refined familial machinations unfold, the woman of the house, Emma Recchi, skates along the tight seams of the family, exuding elegance and uncertain turbulence.

Breathless is a powerful, beautifully written and hugely relevant play. On a summer morning four women meet on a roadside. None of them has ever met before but they share one thing – each is missing, presumed dead. Inspired by events in the Irish midlands, Breathless is by turns funny, compelling and desperately sad. This four-hander play is a story of love, longing and survival. Written and directed by John MacKenna - writer of Who By Fire and Corner Boys.
The performance will be followed by a post show talk with the cast and writer/director John MacKenna.
Shankill-based Rampage School of Dance has been practicing innovative styles of modern dance for over 7 years. This show will demonstrate a wide range of modern dance styles including hip hop, contemporary and jazz. Rampage School of Dance 2010 show will be a truly entertaining performance for Mermaid audiences.

After a sell out six week tour of Ireland in 2009, Basil, Sybil and Manuel return to serve you dinner and a feast of comic delights, some familiar some off the cuff but all with a ‘Faulty’ seasoning and a guarantee to keep you laughing all the way to dessert. Basil is manic, Sybil domineering, and Manuel is of course hopelessly language-challenged. Everything that can go wrong, does! Just don’t mention the war! Featuring all the best gags and a great meal, this is a loosely-scripted, pitch-perfect comedy served in conjunction with Betelnut Café. Pre-theatre drinks at 7.30pm in the foyer followed by dinner in Mermaid’s Auditorium.
Frederick Wiseman offers us a portrait of the renowned Paris Opera Ballet. We meet everyone from the cleaning crew to the director, who reigns over her constantly rehearsing dancers like an enlightened despot and refers to them as ‘half nun, half boxer.’ Wiseman places the emphasis on the stars in training, the premieres danseurs, and the corps de ballet, from rehearsal room to the stage. He accomplishes this in his usual observational style with a handheld camera, and without any added music or comment. What we do get are the silent, recurring images of the abandoned corridors and stairwells that connect the ballet halls and the offices, where the sunlight reflects on the floors.

Mariem Hassan is the voice of the Sahara, the voice of the dessert. Adored by Saharawis living in exile, Mariem Hassan is an icon that gives hope to those who still live in the territories occupied by Morocco. With her prodigious voice and intelligence, she’s been able to bring up to date Saharawi music and make it attractive for 21st century music audiences. In the film we go through Mariem’s misfortuned life, we discover her as a courageous and enduring character and we witness her artistic transformation into one of the most charismatic and respected figures of the World Music scene.
After winning a free car in an advertising campaign, Delia travels with her family to Bucharest to shoot a beverage commercial and claim her prize. Her good fortune turns into an extreme and emotionally painful situation when Delia and her parents get into an argument about the car. Delia wants to keep it for herself, but her parents want to sell it to escape the family’s extreme poverty. As the action unfolds the shooting becomes more absurd, and the clash between Delia and her family intensifies – forcing Delia to rethink and question her family’s unity. This film explores the issues of moral judgment, the disparity between big-city sophistication and small-town parochialism, and the difference in expectations each generation has.

Some bands are destined to stay together, the songs a powerful cohesive in the intertwined lives of their performers. Scullion is such a band. Three decades on from their formative gigs together, their signature sound is as strong as ever. The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King have taken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson, who has ably filled the role of founding member Greg Boland. Folk and traditional songs with contemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour, still inhabit their shows with songs including Eyelids Into Snow, Down in The City and John The Baptist.
From the studio that brought you Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda comes How to Train Your Dragon. Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

Amber has fierce bad indigestion and the Sambucas aren’t getting rid of it. Lorraine attacks a customer at work and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist. Kay’s got an itch that Gem can’t scratch (but maybe Kermit can). This perfectly pitched comedy focuses around three generations of women in modern day Artane and one extraordinary year of sex, birth, death and salsa classes. Little Gem, Elaine Murphy’s first full-length play, has swept the boards since its sell out run as part of the 2008 Dublin Fringe Festival. It was the surprise hit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the first ever Irish production to receive the prestigious Carol Tambor Award.
Undeniably one of the most compelling films of the year, shining a floodlight on the Rape of Nanking. The massacre depicted in the film took place over several long weeks as part of the Japanese invasion of China in December 1937. Guided by the privileged eye of acclaimed director Lu Chuan, who spent almost four years researching the script, the film abandons the noisy fanfare of political propaganda and plunges into the disorienting chaos of war. Shot in gorgeous, majestic black and white, this is an epic and truly harrowing cinematic experience. Lu’s camera records both the atrocity and the humanity of the soldiers, the strength and abnegation of the women, and finally the powerful drive to survive under the most extreme conditions.

Revanche is an elegantly structured and impressively acted thriller. It begins by introducing us to a couple who, though existing at the outskirts of legality, have somehow managed to forge a well-balanced, loving relationship. Alex (Johannes Krisch) works as a heavy in the brothel where Tamara (Irina Potapenko), an immigrant from the east, services seedy businessmen. When her boss suggests a change in her professional circumstances – promising on the surface, but with sinister undercurrents – Alex elects to solve all their problems by robbing a bank. This being an Austrian film, the raid goes disastrously wrong and Alex retires to the country to hideout with his granddad, where he starts a strange affair with a married neighbour. Dir Gotz Spielmann 2008. 2009 Oscar Nomineé.
Lorelei Lee and her friend Dorothy Shaw are a pair of showgirls, Dorothy the sassy one looking for true love, Lorelei the blonde hoping to marry a millionaire, with her sights set on Gus Esmond, a wealthy nerd stuck under his father’s thumb. When Lorelei and Dorothy take a transatlantic cruise to Paris, an undercover detective follows to find out if Lorelei is really a gold-digging schemer. Unfortunately, the irrepressible Lorelei is a born flirt and soon finds herself in a compromising position with Sir Francis Beekman (Charles Coburn), owner of a diamond mine. The girls have to use all their wits to get out of trouble and still find love and marriage. One of the most charming, entertaining musicals of the 1950s.

Expose yourself to some culture in Bray this Culture Night! Mermaid Arts Centre is opening its doors late and giving you the opportunity to explore. Have you ever stood on the stage at Mermaid and looked into the auditorium? Ever wondered what goes on backstage or in the control/projection room. Join us for a behind the scenes late night access to Mermaid Arts Centre from 5pm-11pm. The evening will include a special dance preview by the Cathy Sharpe Dance Ensemble and Mermaid’s gallery will also be open late, where you will have the opportunity to meet key artists from the dynamic exhibition UNBUILDING. Keep an eye on Mermaid’s website for a full Culture Night line-up.
Nordic-Celtic Connections offers a great line-up of musicians from Sweden, Ireland and Scotland.
The traditional Swedish instrument, the nyckelharpa is played by Sweden’s leading proponent of the stringed instrument, Peter Puma Hedlund, performing a unique Nordic-Celtic musical fusion with Dublin ‘piping hot’ uilleann piper Leo Rickard and Raphy Doyle on guitar and mandola (a form of the mandolin).
The trio is joined by two of Scotland’s top traditional musicians, Paul Anderson, the finest Scots fiddler of his generation, and Shona Donaldson, Scotland’s Traditional Singer of the Year 2009.

The Cathy Sharp Dance Ensemble from Basel, Switzerland returns to Ireland with an exciting new evening of dance. CSDE will present Dance Collection - three very different choreographies highlighting the exceptional dancers of the company: American choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s Sometime Salvation Excerpts is a study in precise and beautiful motion; T 4 2 takes a humourous look at cultural habits and misunderstandings between Swiss choreographer/dancer Félix Duméril and his Japanese collaborator Misato Inoue; Van Gogh Variations is Cathy Sharp’s very poetic interpretation of facets of Vincent van Gogh’s life based on his letters to his brother. This will be the first time that CSDE will perform at Mermaid!

The emotional traumas of young Israeli soldiers drafted into the war with Lebanon are recounted in this wrenching concentration of raw emotion. Set entirely within the claustrophobic confines of an armoured tank; the only views of the outside world are through the cross-hairs of the gun barrel. Four hot, grime-streaked, twenty-something soldiers are manning the tank amid deafening noise and a sickening rocking and bumping motion. No one obeys orders, and one by one they go into panic as they realize they have driven into a lethal trap. This must qualify as one of the most antiheroic war movies ever made; not a single character can stomach battle or shows the slightest courage towards his comrades. Dir: Samuel Maoz. game-playJulie Henry & Angela Fulcher
This exhibition brings together the work of two artists, Julie Henry and Angela Fulcher, both of whom in their practice explore social spaces, such as football matches and music festivals, and our participation in society.
The football phenomenon features heavily in the work of the two artists, both approaching the sport from diverse angles and with different intentions. Going Down by Julie Henry comprises two projections played on a continuous loop of ardent fans at a football match. One projection focuses on the subdued group supporting the losing team, while the other features the celebratory actions of the supporters of the winning side. The work gives a sense of the investment of the fans in their team and blurs the boundaries between audience and performer.
Angela Fulcher’s collage, assemblage and installation work includes Balls, a geodesic sculpture created using found footballs washed up on the shores of the Lee, Fabric Football made from the fabric of found umbrellas and Out There 4 Man incorporating material from tents unceremoniously abandoned after music festivals.
This exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive education programme supported by Greenstar.

UNBUILDING began as a curatorial initiative of Wicklow County Council, starting in spring 2009 through a Curator-in-Residence programme led by appointed curator Clíodhna Shaffrey. The curatorial residency was designed by the local authority to support artists in new and innovative ways involving intensive discussion, collaboration and exploration of their practice within the context of the programme. The group of 11 artists and 3 curators have during the last year evolved their ideas through examing strands of interest that emerged in common creating a platform to showcase new work in a specially designed event for Mermaid Arts Centre.
UNBUILDING includes off-site projects, an architecturally designed space at Mermaid, over 8 exhibitions rotating weekly, House on Fire (an anonymous group experiment) and a programme of weekly talks, presentations, and screenings. Check www.unbuildingproject.com for further details on artist’s talks and events.
Artists and curators include Pauline Cummins, Felicity Clear, Damien Flood, Cliona Harmey, Mary Kelly, Eilís Lavelle, Rosie Lynch, Bea McMahon, sinead Ní Mhaonaígh, James Merrigan, Kate Minnock, Clíodhna shaffrey, Tamsin snow & Kate Warner.
This project has been initiated by Wicklow County Arts Office and Arts Officer Jenny Sherwin, with additional support from ArtLinks and Mermaid Arts Centre.

Take a bow!
The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a
big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most
popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define
who we are today, and imagine our future. We can
all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists
have earned around the world.
The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart
investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid
many times over. The dividends come in the form of
a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible,
educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural
tourism industry worth a2.4 billion directly a year.
The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for
funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding
from the taxpayer, through the Department of Arts,
Sport and Tourism, for 2010 is a69.15 million, that’s
less than a1 a week for every household.
So, at the end of your next inspirational encounter
with the arts, don’t forget the role you played and
take a bow yourself!
