Term 4 Week 7 Thursday 16 November 2017 PRINCIPAL'S PAGE Magic of Music Concert Last night our school hosted the Magic of Music Concert in our Performing Arts Centre. The hall was packed with parents and family members who were well and truly entertained during the evening. Thanks go to our fantastic music teachers Mrs Joy Powell, Mrs Dena Reid, Ms Helen Hurst, Miss Deb Body, Ms Stephanie Williams and also our wonderful choir and instrumental students who showcased their musical achievements for this year. Our school music program continues to grow in strength each year. Our students are becoming seasoned performers with two concerts this year, eisteddfod performances, Music Count Us In and also the many opportunities here at school to perform at different school functions and events. On the evening, Senior medals were given to our leaving Year 6 students who will be sorely missed from our program. All children also received a Music Participation Certificate acknowledging their efforts during the year. Thank you to; Mrs Lush who provided expert accompaniment to our performances Mr Greg McBlane for setting up and operating the sound system Mrs Collinge for doing the amazing certificates and organising the raffle At the end of the night each of our music teachers were presented with a bunch of flowers, courtesy of the P&C Association. A big thank you to all our parents for their ongoing support of our music program and for encouraging your children to actively participate in the school’s music program. As we know there is a lot more than just performing on stage. There are the many hours practising at home and the many rehearsals and lessons here at school. Thank you to all the school staff and parents who assisted on the night. It was very much appreciated. Mrs Anderson again did a fabulous job as the MC on the night and we thank her for her ongoing support of our school’s music program. Robina State High School Awards Night On Monday night Ms Hall attended the Robina State High School Awards night. She was very pleased to see a number of former Merrimac Primary students receiving academic and cultural awards. The staff of Robina High should be congratulated for their efforts and for the high standard of the presentation evening. Well done to the following Merrimac State School past students who were presented with awards at the Robina State High School Awards Night: Rhys Castle - Griffith University Early Entry Ethan Redhead - Griffith University Early Entry, Academic Excellence Year 12 Griffin Watson - Griffith University Early Entry Harmony Bampton – Southern Cross University Star Entry Guaranteed Admission Griffin Watson - Excellence in Instrumental Music Award - Senior Liam Anderson - Academic Excellence Year 10 Next P&C Meeting Our next P&C meeting is scheduled for Monday 27 th November at 6.30pm in the Admin Building. There will be a short P and C meeting followed by a farewell to our P and C Operations Manager, Mr James Anderson who finishes his role at the end of this month. All interested parents are invited to attend. There will be no Merrimac Outside School Hours Care meeting on that evening. Also there will be no International Exchange Parent on that night as well. Prep Experience Days Term Four is an exciting time for our Preparatory Program. Merrimac State School is inviting new Prep students for 2018 to attend a two hour Prep Experience morning. The first Prep Experince was held on Tuesday this week. It went extremely well. The new students got to experience Prep and were right at home with all the activities and routines during the morning. All the new Prep parents took part in an information session presented by Mrs Hall (Deputy Principal), Mrs White (Master Teacher) and Mrs Prentis (Literacy Coach). The parents also enjoyed a guided tour of all the school facilities. The next scheduled Experience Days are for Tuesday 21 and Tuesday 28 November. On these days the children will be engaged in Early Learning activities relating to Prep. This is to reassure them that school can be an enjoyable place where they can learn safely. They will also get to know some of the areas such as the classroom, playground and toilets. Mrs Hall, Mrs Prentis and Mrs White will again be holding a parent information session in the Science Room for interested parents from 9.30am-10.45am. This will allow parents to settle their child into the room and be back before the end of the session. A tour of our school facilities will also be undertaken during the morning session. Enrolled students were provided with a letter indicating their date for experience morning at the orientation session attended by their parents. If you did not attend please see the office for your Prep Orientation pack. Getting to know our new students and their families It is now easier for families to share their child’s Kindergarten Transition statement with the school. The statements are a great way for our Prep teachers to get to know the children in their class before the first day, so they can prepare to welcome them and plan for their ongoing learning and development. Kindergarten teachers, parents, carers and children develop transition statements together near the end of the kindy year. The Transition Statement gives Prep teachers a snapshot of each child’s strengths, interests and learning through kindy. Parents and carers can now give their consent for Transition statements to be forwarded to a child’s new school and outside school hours care service directly from kindergartens. We will be in touch with local services to ensure our email address is known to the kindergarten teachers. For more information about the new Transition statement consent form visit the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority website. https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/kindergarten/curriculum_2017 Merrimac State School Newsletter

From the desk of Ralph and Rosie Merrimac State School Focus of The week Over this past week, the children at Merrimac State School have been examining the topic of wearing the school hat when playing. Wearing the school hat encourages sun safety and reduces the risk of special hats being lost, broken or misplaced. In their classes and on parade, the boys and girls at MSS have been asked to engage in discussions, role plays and class demonstrations on the importance of wearing the school hat. Well done to 1C and 5E for being awarded the Ralph and Rosie Award of the Week. 1C received their award for lining up beautifully and keeping their area tidy. They were spotted by 2E. 5E received their award for always having a tidy eating area. They were spotted by 5C. Congratulations to all girls and boys for remembering to be safe, respectful learners in the classroom and in the playground. Students will need to commit to attending each week from 8.00am to 8.45am to be part of the program. The program will run through till Week Nine. I’m sure that Chappie Steve will appreciate any staff and parent help in running this program. We certainly appreciate the support from our P and C Association, Coles Worongary and the Genesis Church who have supported the Breakfast/Fitness Program this term allowing us to buy the various breakfast requirements. COMMUNITY NEWS

Good morning Principals and school staff, With only a few weeks left of the school year, myGC.com.au has teamed up with Domayne Gold Coast to run a competition to reward one lucky teacher with an Apple MacBook Pro and their class (of up to 30 students) with four VIP Magic Passes each. To nominate a teacher, all parents and students have to do is tell us in 50 words or less why they think the teacher deserves this end of year reward. Multiple nominations are accepted but one entry form has to be filled out for each teacher they wish to nominate; http://www.mygc.com.au/thank-a-teacher/ The teacher with the most nominations will receive an Apple MacBook Pro valued at almost $2,000! The whole class will also win… up to 30 students will enjoy endless fun, thrills and adventures with unlimited entry for four people each to Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World and Wet ‘n’ Wild Gold Coast until 30 June 2018. This is not a national competition, it is only open to teachers working in suburbs of the City of Gold Coast, Tweed and Scenic Rim shires. We know that teachers make a huge difference to the lives of students beyond their job descriptions. Your assistance to share this opportunity with your students and families would be much appreciated. Nominations close midnight Thursday 30 November, and on Friday 1 December, the Hot Tomato 1029ers will visit the winning school to award the winning teacher and deliver the prizes. Will it be your school? If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks in advance for helping share this opportunity.
