    Violence & threats

must not be toleratedI heartily agree with many of the con-cerns expressed by the letters to the edi-tor (Merritt Herald, Thursday Sept. 19)regarding how council business is con-ducted in our city. Our city does deserve

better. But, perhaps the question shouldbe asked as to why a majority of council-lors so strongly resists the manner inwhich council business is conducted. It istoo simple to just dismiss their concernsas petty bickering, self-serving interests, and power struggles. The incident in-volving Councillor Kroeker and themayors husband is truly alarming. Itdoes not deserve to be lightly dismissed. It is indicative of deeper concerns.

It is unfortunate that personal feelingssometimes rise to the surface during dis-

cussions but violence, or even the threatof violence, must not be tolerated as ameans to silence opposition. Not ever!We must never let fear and intimidation

be used as a means to silence dissentingvoices. It is unfortunate that our mayordid not immediately and uncondition-ally speak out that violence has no placein the politics of our city.

Instead, we hear allegations from ourmayor that the majority of council is cor-rupt and dysfunctional, that they ignorethe rules, disrespect tax payers and thatthey are only in it for themselves. No at-tempt to bring sanity to an intolerable sit-uation. No effort at reconciliation. No apologies. Not even a phone call to ask whathappened. Just sweep it under the carpet.

Yes, council does need to work together for the good of our city. But perhaps weneed to explore the root causes of the problems and not just condemn the symptoms.

Councillor ChristophersonOrganic Weekcelebrates organic food sector. Sept. 21-28The Govt of BC has issued a proclamation that , Sept. 21 - 28, 2013, shall be known

as Organic Week. The proclamation acknowledges the contribution the organic sectormakes to economic and environmental well-being of BC and how the industry isgrowing to meet the increasing demand for local organic products.

The BC govt is continuing to work with the BC organic farming sector in raisingthe profile of BC Certified Organic foods and ensuring consumers know about thewide variety of organic food products available in the province.

What Religion Is Your Bra?A man walked into the ladies' department of Macy's and shyly said to the woman atthe counter, "I'd like to buy a bra for my wife." "What type of bra?" asked the clerk."Type?" inquired the man. "There's more than one type?" "Look around," said thesaleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, color, and material imag-inable. "Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only four types of bras tochoose from."

Relieved, the man asked about the types. The saleslady replied, "There are theCatholic, the Salvation Army, the Presbyterian, and the Baptist types. Which one wouldyou prefer?" Now befuddled again, the man asked about the differences between

them. The saleslady responded, "It's really quite simple. The Catholic type supportsthe masses. The Salvation Army type lifts the fallen, the Presbyterian type keeps themstaunch and upright, and the Baptist type makes mountains out of molehills."
