ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE HEAT THIS SUMMER?
Here are some simple things you can do to reduce the impact of extreme heat:
Stay Hydrated – you should drink two to three litres of water a day even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid
“fizzy”, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks and do not take salt tablets (unless instructed to by a doctor)
Dress For Summer – lightweight, light coloured clothing reflects heat and sunlight and helps your
body maintain a normal temperature
Check On Those At Risk – visit at-risk individuals such as the sick and elderly at least twice a day
and keep an eye on children. Watch for signs of heat-related illness
Minimise Sun Exposure – keep out of the sun as much as possible. If you must be in the sun, wear a
shirt, hat and sunglasses. Also make sure you wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn, which limits the
body’s ability to cope with heat
Prepare Your Home – Prepare your home early. Service or replace your air conditioner BEFORE you
need it. Curtains, awnings and blinds can also help to keep the home cool
Make Use Of Air Conditioning – if you don’t have air conditioning, make use of public facilities such
as shopping centres, art galleries, cinemas or other air-conditioned buildings. Portable fans are also
useful in drawing in cool air, or exhausting warm air from a room
Remember Your Pets – pets can be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Make sure they have shade
and plenty of cool water to last the day
Seek Medical Advice If Necessary – for medical advice telephone Health direct Australia on
1800 022 222. For immediate medical assistance telephone 000 With global warming resulting in rising temperatures, extreme heat events, resulting in summer heatwaves will become more common and a part of life in Australia. It is important that we prepare for heatwaves to ensure that we stay safe and well during these times.

My Local Services App
More and more people are using smart phones to access information so wouldn't it be great if you could find out which rubbish bin had to go out tonight, or what's the nearest park to me or what events are
happening in the area this weekend?
Well now you can do all of this and more! My Local Services app works across the state to deliver information about local services to local communities.
( Make sure you turn on your location to get the most out of the app )
Spotlight Delivers key messages to the Home screen of the
App. Spotlights can link to web pages on the Council website to further inform you of upcoming
events etc.
Near Me Easily discover nearby Council facilities such as
parks, playgrounds and libraries. The inbuilt mapping application on the device can then
guide you to the nearest Council park.
Events Lists Council events that are coming up and are
relative to your location.
Kerbside collection services A handy reference for which bin to put out and
when. This feature also provides ‘push notifications’ as a reminder.
Report It Gives you the ability to report issues which require Council attention such as pavement failures etc.
Push Notifications You can set reminders related to bin set-out,
events and payment due notices.
Download the App
The app can be downloaded on iPhone and Android. Search "My Local Services" in the App Store or the Play Store

“SA Water VACSWIM is a program to waterproof the confidence in young South Australians, in and around the water. It is a South Australian Government supported initiative to provide children aged 5 to 13 years with opportunities to develop a range of skills and positive experiences in the areas of water safety, confidence and competence in the water, personal survival activities and basic aquatic emergency procedures. These skills are delivered at over 130 pools, beaches and lakes throughout South Australia by one of three primary program providers – Royal Life Saving Society, Surf Life Saving and YMCA – who engage qualified instructors to teach the children of South Australia. The majority of programs take place from Monday 4th to Tuesday 12th January 2016; they run for 45 minutes a day for 7 days. For more information visit http://www.vacswimsa.com.au/ ”
