The Last Days of Advent

Most of us have these days of December filled with all kinds of activity, and maybe some of us are already worn out. I have even heard a few people say over the years, “I can’t wait until Christmas is over, and we can get back to normal.” In a way, that is a sad commentary on how secular celebrations of Christmas (including the shopping, card writing, etc.) can really zap our energy and make us feel empty and frustrated. The last days of Advent may be busier than ever for many of us, therefore making it more difficult to complete our final preparations for our spiritual side to welcome Jesus into our world and lives. As my own life has become busier over the years with more responsibilities, I have found one consoling thought to be of great help. If everything is not done by Christmas Day, I do not get too upset. Our society says that Christmas is pretty much over by December 26. Our church, however, says our Christmas celebration ends on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is January 12th of next year. It is still acceptable to send or receive a Christmas greeting anytime in that period. In fact, some people appreciate some Christmas celebration after the day itself, since they have a little more time to appreciate all that this season is about. It is also still acceptable to give a gift to someone we care about, even if it is after Christmas Day. The spirit of Christmas knows no time limitations. The spirit that brings us to loving others is one that is to last every day of the year. During these last days of Advent, let us try as best we can to have some quiet time to reflect on what it means for us to have Jesus enter our world and our hearts. When December 26th arrives, let us remember that we are still celebrating the birth of One who came as one of us and continues to make His presence known to us: Jesus Christ. Even though we are still in the season of Advent, this is the last bulletin before Christmas. Therefore, on behalf of the parish staff, I would like to wish all of you a very Blessed and Merry Christmas! May this time of year be a time of peace, grace and joy. The Christ Child came into the world once and will come again as King and Savior. Let us rejoice in knowing that Jesus continues to be with His people. He is always loving, forgiving and caring about each and every one of us! Father David

Help Decorate God’s House for Christmas!

Entering the Season of Advent we prepare our hearts for the birth of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. The House of Our Lord also needs to prepare for His coming.

Sunday, December 22nd, following the 11:00 A.M. Mass, the Art & Environment Committee will be preparing God’s House for the Celebration of Christmas.

Remembering Christmases Past, the magic as you enter St. James the Apostle Church is POWERFUL and GLORIOUS!

We need many helping hands to make this happen! Please consider joining us after the 11:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday, December 22nd, as a family or individual. Or join us at noon that day. No experience necessary.

Sandwiches, chips, hot chocolate and treats will be available for those helping.

Consecration to the Holy Family at all Masses December 28-29

To celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family on the weekend of December 29-30 the Knights of Columbus, Council #9806 of St. James the Apostle Parish will sponsor a special prayer at each of the Masses. After Communion at each Mass families will be invited to pray the special prayer led by the celebrant. In this prayer, each family of the parish consecrates themselves to the Holy Family and devotes themselves to the ideal model of familial love set by Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Through this consecration, each participant is consciously choosing to be a beacon of God’s love through His Church. We hope you will join us on the Feast of the Holy Family for this special opportunity.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! As we enter into this week with family, friends, and all the business of last minute items, here is a suggestion for you. Why not take some time to sit with your family, read this week's Scripture, and take some time to reflect & pray together? How about going to do some service like clearing out your closets & bringing clothes to St Vincent DePaul, or working at a soup kitchen? Time with our family members is precious. Blessings to all our St James families this Christmas season!
