Futurebuild 2019 – our thoughts

We have seen a rise in people using Semi Rigid Ducting throughout the UK on MVHR units. This is not surprising with up to 70% of time saved during the on-site installation in comparison to rigid ducting. This product also minimises issues with the ductwork installation and can come in handy with tight spaces as the ductwork is only 75mm diameter (or 51mm x 115mm oval).

Duct tape is not for duct work!

Despite its name DuctTape was not designed for use on ventilation ductwork. Cold and hot temperatures can cause this type of duct tape to fl ag and fall off , leaving leaks in the system that can result in energy loss and expensive heating and cooling bills. Aluminium ventilation tape or similar suitable tape should be used along with suitable fasteners (i.e. cable ties, jubilee clips).

With the increasing decarbonisation of the grid, the GLA have provided guidance that a revised set of emission factors (SAP10) are now encouraged to be used on compliance calculations for energy and sustainability reports. With the increase of electricity from renewable technology generation the associated electricity emission factor has been reduced to refl ect this. This may allow more varied design choices in M&E specifi cation in future developments and we can assist here.

The introduction of Approved Document Part L back in 2010 has forced us to look at building energy effi ciency. The national calculation method (SAP for dwellings and SBEM for commercial buildings) challenges building design and construction and with some success. Construction materials and design have been developed

to improve thermal effi ciency and air tightness. Incentives, such as the Government’s Feed-In-Tariff , have further increased the interest in renewable technologies. However, in some cases, renewables have been used to counter poor construction. There has been a tendency to ‘fi x’ fl awed design by installing photovoltaics. Solar panels have become the ugly ‘Band-Aid’ to achieve compliance with Part L.

If you are a larger architectural practice or developer why not book our seminar to explore these issues. We take a look at photovoltaics and how, if integrated as part of considered building design,

they can be an asset to the project. We will also explore alternatives to PV, looking at low energy building design and integration of renewables and their assistance in achieving Building Regulation compliance.

Whether you love pv or not, if you are involved with the design, specifi cation and delivery of new construction projects, this seminar will be of interest to you. We aim to give you an up-to-date understanding of renewables and their incorporation into your projects. Email Paul for more information [email protected]

When a Right to Light forces ‘extra time’Even one of the world’s richest men can be caught out by a neighbour’s Right to Light. The redevelopment of Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium has been in the news following a dispute between the club and a neighbour who felt their light would be reduced by the new stadium. A neighbour can be in a very strong position (even if your development has planning approval) and so it’s always a good idea to get us to take a look at your plans to see if there is any risk of a penalty (sorry!).
