If you desire to be confirmed by the Bishop on Sunday, November 3, attending each class is a pre-requisite. Our class meets from 10:10-11:00a.m. each Sunday morning in Dean Richardson room on the 2nd floor. As all of our time is valuable, please arrive on time. We will have coffee and snacks provided by the church. We will also gather at the Bishop Jones Center one Saturday along the way to share a meal, meet the Bishop, and cover some additional ground. The date for this will be decided together at our first class, so bring your calendar. Questions are always encouraged. We’ll do our best to answer or find someone who can answer when we can’t. We are all always learning and being formed in the faith. If you have a Book of Common Prayer (1979), bring it. Jot notes in it as we go. (It won’t hurt the book, really.) Who knows? Your notes might speak to you on some upcoming Sunday morning in the middle of worship. If you don’t have one, consider purchasing one…or you can always borrow one from the church. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

The fall worship schedule begins on

September 8. Christian Formation

for all ages will begin on September 8.

Overview

We know that we are members of the Body of Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, forgiven and given life eternal through our baptism; these are the deep truths and also the mysteries of our faith. But what does all that really look like in our day to day lives? By growing in our knowledge and understanding of what it means to be a disciple and of the symbols and ritual actions of the church – their history, meaning, and purpose – we begin to appreciate these mysteries, and in so doing, prepare ourselves to encounter the living God in more deeply transformative ways.

Goals

What are your goals? Seriously. While a weekly game plan is prepared, it’s important to know what you’d like to get out of this class. So be thinking about it: what do you want and need? We will discuss this in our first class.

Expectations

Each class builds on the previous classes, so plan to attend every session. That said, life happens, so a make-up session can be scheduled. (The downside is you can’t write in those.) There is no required reading for this class. However, we’ll

provide a recommended reading list of books and

resources that we will reference throughout the class.

There was a special commissioning on Sunday, August 18 of the new work to which God is calling the Rev. Dr. Jane Patterson at the Seminary of the Southwest and The Rev. Dr. John Lewis at the St. Benedict’s WorkShop. The congregation gathered around them in the liturgy to lay hands to bless them as they continue the work they have begun in their years with us at St. Mark’s.

5:00p.m.-6:30p.m. (Take out service is available. Call the church

Cost: Adults $8.00 | Children $5.00

“If I had taken this pilgrimage when I was thirty, the course of my whole life would have been different,” said a participant on a 2012 pilgrimage to the Holy Land led by Jane Patterson and John Lewis at The WorkShop. From this statement was born the idea to develop a pilgrimage especially for adults under 40 (if you’re over 40, still consider yourself a “young adult” at heart, and are committed to the next generation of the church, you’re also included!). Together with some additional church leaders who are committed to this project, and with the encouragement of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, The WorkShop is currently putting together a group of pilgrims who will trace the journeys made by Jesus and his disciples, from Nazareth to Galilee, Capernaum to Jerusalem, Bethlehem to the Mount of Olives. The trip will include visits to Qumran (site of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls), Masada, Jacob’s Well, and other important historical and archaeological sites. The emphasis of the pilgrimage will be to experience the places of Jesus’ life and ministry with both heart and mind, recognizing that such encounters will shape us as more Christ-centered disciples and leaders in the church. We will depart San Antonio on Friday, June 13, 2014, and return on Friday, June 27, 2014. The WorkShop has reserved space on this pilgrimage for at least five young adults from St. Mark’s. One of our principal

goals in this collaborative venture with other diocesan congregations is to deepen the discipleship of some of our young adults in the diocese. We hope to build up the ministry of our diocese by helping to form the next generation of faithful leaders. We also expect that the pilgrimage will create a sense of community among the participating young adults in the Diocese of West Texas, as they discern their vocations to work, family, and service. Whether you are a young adult considering becoming a pilgrim on this journey, or a not-so-young adult who is able to contribute to someone else’s costs, this pilgrimage concerns you as part of the community of St. Mark’s. Cost of the

pilgrimage for older participants is $5000. But The WorkShop is so excited about the long-term value of this pilgrimage for our younger adults that we are offering a $1500 scholarship to help fund each young adult’s participation. Therefore, at most, the cost to them would be $3,500 (double occupancy) for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Additional scholarship aid is being gathered by your clergy, The Revs. Ned Bowersox and Carol Morehead, who are also committed to helping support the participation of young adults from St. Mark’s. Perhaps you are one of the generous givers who will help someone else be transformed by a journey to the Holy Land, or perhaps you are a younger adult drawn to the possibility of using this pilgrimage as a time to discern more deeply

how your life may show forth your values. In the coming weeks, we anticipate that additional scholarship funding will become available to participants through the generosity of St. Mark’s parishioners. Deadline for registration of pilgrims is November 1, 2013. If you are interested in joining this pilgrimage, please let us know as soon as possible by contacting Katherine Buzzini at the WorkShop ([email protected]) or your St. Mark’s clergy staff. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining us on this life-changing pilgrimage.

Hello St. Mark’s, I am so excited to be joining you all this year as the Children's and Youth Ministries Assistant. I am originally from Harlingen and am starting my fifth year living in San Antonio. I love international mission work and my long-haired dachshund, Roscoe. I have done mission work in Uganda and went to Haiti this summer. I just graduated in May from Trinity University with a BA in Sociology and have already started graduate school (also at Trinity) to get my Master's of Art in Teaching for Elementary and Special Education. I will be doing my student teaching this upcoming year in a 2nd grade class at Woodridge Elementary. I spent the past year at St. John's New Braunfels as the youth minister and was the youth leader at St. George here in San Antonio the previous year. This diocese and Camp Capers have played instrumental roles in my life. I began attending camp when I was 10, session counseling when I was 16, and was on summer staff in 2009 on the Work Crew. I counseled the entire summer of 2010 and served as the Session Staff Coordinator in 2012. Working with kids is my passion, and I cannot wait to get to know my new St. Mark's family! Mary Hayden Manning Children’s and Youth Ministries Assistant

S taff U pdate

I am grateful for all the warm welcomes and gracious hospitality extended to me from St Mark’s staff and parishioners. I am originally from northern Maine and have worked at Episcopal churches in Worcester MA, Houston TX, and Wilmington NC. My undergrad degree is from University of Maine, and my Masters in Religious Education is from Boston College. I look forward to partnering with families to expand St Mark’s Children’s and Family Ministries, as our Lord guides and directs. Together we will continue to grow a creative children’s ministry program for the purpose of bringing children into a life-long, life-changing relationship with God, helping them to grow in their love for God and service to others. I am eager to create a Family Ministry leadership team to focus on faith, fellowship, family, fun (and probably food) as we continue St Mark’s commitment to the spiritual development of faithful families. At baptisms, the congregation answers “We will” to the question “Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?” Together, we will live into that promise and grow God’s kingdom. Please introduce yourself to me and help me begin to learn your name! Faithfully, Gail Jackins Families & Children’s Ministries
