RE: Mesa de Oro, Raney Geotechnical Data

Attn: Jayne Nelson

Dear Ms Nelson

Attached please find the data submitted to GRD by RaneyGeotechnical related to direct shear tests conducted onrepresentative soil samples from borings three and four on theabove project. Based on our recent discussion with Mr. BradShipley it was decided to submit this data separately from thereport on slope stability due to significant questions concerningits applicability.

The types of soils involved in the testing by Raney Geotechnicalmay be classified as fine grained, very silty sands or very sandysilts. Upon receipt of the enclosed data from Raney, the data wassubjected to standard methods of analysis. The resultant angles ofinternal friction thus obtained were, for the most part, in excessof forty degrees. Comparison of the angles of internal frictionobtained from the Raney data with those from standard soilsengineering references indicates that this questionably high.

The soil types indicated by gradation testing of sample splits fromthe samples submitted to Raney for shear testing indicate that thesoils are similar to the silty sand, dense to loose portrayed onthe attached chart entitled "Typical Internal Friction Angles fromPublished Sources".

The questions generated by comparison of the Raney results withthose calculated for the similar samples from adjacent borings thatwere tested by J.H. Kleinfelder Associates (JHK) raised additionalquestions. The JHK data was reported in the report on SlopeStability. Both sets of laboratory data were subjected toregression analysis by GRD. The resulting data is attached.

(209)267-5370 . 30 Church Street . POit Office Box 67? . Sutler Creek. California 9^>8S . FAX (?09) ?67 9?85

Upon analysis of the regression analysis results, the fundamentalquestions still remained. Raney Geotechnical was contacted. Theirresponse is attached which, based on their comments concerninginterpretation of the data, introduces further questions.

Given the questions raised and the ambiguity of the "responses" tothose questions obtained, it is the professional opinion of theundersigned that the Raney Geotechnical data can not be utilizedwith confidence in the evaluation of slope stability for the Mesade Oro project.

Respectfully submitted,GEOTECHNICAL RESEARCH

As you requested, attached arc (wo plots of direct shear data for Mesa De Oro sample B3 7.5 . For mostmaterials, the ul t imate values (10% to 15% strain; displacement 0.2 to 0.3 inches) usually provides themost reasonable plots. On some materials, however, the shear strength at the beginning yield point givesmore consistent and reasonable values. Experience has shown that the yield point usually occurs aroundthree percent strain (displacement 0.06+ inches). On many soils, the vertical height on the shear testcan give a clue as to when yie lding occurs as yielding is usually accompanied by dilation which resultseither in an increase in sample height or at least a decrease in the rate of consolidation. Scanning the testresults shows that for many samples the dilation occurs at displacements of 0.06 to 0.07 inches.

The decision as to whether to use yield or u l t ima te values may be made based on which gives the mostconsistent and reasonable results. To make this determination, all tests on a particular material type canbe placed on the same plot.

1 understand you had questions regarding whether a constant sample area was assumed in calculatingstresses. For all the results we presented to you, a constant area based on a 1.93-inch diameter samplewas assumed. Adjustments could be made to the area as the shear test progresses; however, the geometryof shearing circular samples is complex and the effects of the overlapping lips of the shear box du r ingshearing arc indeterminate. Since the direct shear lest is only intended as quick and inherent lyapproximate method to obtain soil strengths, the assumption of a constant shear area is reasonable. Keepin mind that if the calculation? are made using a sample area that changes with the strain, then the normalstress also must be recalculated for each value of strain. The effect is that of increasing both the shearand normal stresses at the same rate, so that the data point moves up the graph practically along the lineof the strength envelope. Therefore use of a variable area versus a constant area usual ly has a negligibleeffect on the calculated fr ic t ion angle and cohesion.
