INTRODUCTION (MESC-FUJIKURA)

Located in Jordan, MESC–Fujikura Cable is a Joint Venture (JV) established by Middle East Specialized cables Company (MESC) of Saudi Arabia, Fujikura Ltd. of Japan and JNC Cables of Jordan. MESC–Fujikura Cable specializes in the manufacturing of medium and low voltage power cables, and aluminum conductors and wires in Al Mafraq, Jordan. The new JV is the first project to start construction in the King Hussein Bin Talal Development Area in Al Mafraq, 70 KM North East of Amman. MESC – Fujikura Cable is to meet the growing demand of Power Cables in the GCC, Levant and North African regions. This will complete the product mix of the MESC group of companies and Fujikura Ltd., creating a one stop shop for all cable demands (Low Voltage Cables, Medium Voltage Cables, and special cables) in the region .

MESC-Fujikura Cable will employ state of the art facilities and will use the highest grade production machines available today. The facilities will include a Catenary type Continuous Vulcanizer (CCV) line to produce XLPE Medium voltage cables with the highest quality. Backed with latest technology, supervision and know how from Fujikura Ltd, MESC-Fujikura Cable will be the first company in Jordan to manufacture medium voltage power cables to the highest international standards.

MESC-Fujikura Cable’s product mix is classified into three major categories:

XLPE CABLECross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated power cable offers various advantages compared with conventional paper insulated oil-filled cable. XLPE cable has much more flexibility, is lighter weight, and does not require oil supplying system, hence less maintenance in addition to boasting smaller charging current and dielectric loss.

XLPE cable also performs in better continuous and short circuit current carrying capacity resulting from its excellent thermal characteristics. Based on these features, nowadays, XLPE cable is applied for up to 500kV extra-high voltage line.

CHARACTERISTICS OF XLPE CABLE

Polyethylene is superior in electrical characteristics and chemical resistance; however it faces a thermal instability problem and starts to melt when it reaches a temperature of 110oC.

Cross-linked polyethylene, which is the result of a molecular bonding chemical process called “cross-linking“, has solved this melting problem.

The molecular structure of cross-linked polyethylene performs excellent ozone resistance as well as outstanding stability and resistance to heat. The most famous and popular process of “cross-linking” is to blend peroxide (e.g. dicumyl peroxide) into polyethylene and extrude it around the conductor, heat it up to high temperature sufficient to achieve the peroxidation.

SUPERIORITY OF XLPE CABLE

1. Excellent electrical and physical propertiesThe excellent resistivity to thermal deformation and the aging property of XLPE enable the cables to display greater continuous and short circuit current carrying capacity.

2. Free from fire riskSince XLPE cables do not contain cable oil, they are free from failure due to migration of oil.Fire risk due to cable oil is eliminated, enhancing the security of power transimission systems.

3. Maintenance freeXLPE cables are maintenance-free due to the following points:a. Not necessary to train and maintain a team of operation and jointing personnel for oil duties.b. Not necessary to purchase a cable oil treatment plant.c. Not necessary to keep stock of highly flammable cable oil.

4. Lower permitivityPermitivity of XLPE insulation and oil-filled insulation is 2.3 and 3.7 respectively.Since capacitance is proportionate to permitivity, XLPE cables have less capacitance and less charging current than oil filled cables.

5. Lower dielectric lossThe tan of XLPE cables is less than 0.1% compared with that of conventional oil-filled cables,ranging from 0.25 - 0.4 % . Thus, the dielectric loss of XLPE cables is considerably less than that of oil filledcables.

Extrusion Extrusion of “ cross-linked polyethylene “ by triple common extrusion where the semi conducting layers (inner & outer) and insulation are simultaneously extruded over the conductor with high degree of smoothness and no voids or introduction of external contaminants.

Heating Heating to cross-link the pure polyethylene in the pressurized valcanising tube by pressurized high temperature N

2 gas (dry curing).

Cooling Cooling in the tube by pressurized water.
