Febr uar y 2016 Newslet ter
There are some exciting things happening during the third quarter at Chiefess
Kamakahelei Middle School. CKMS is partnering with the Kauai Fire Department in
training all teachers and 6th grade students in Hands-only CPR. Did you know that
when a person has cardiac arrest, survival depends on getting immediate CPR from
someone nearby? CPR can double a victim’s chance of survival? Why? Chest com-
pressions push oxygen through the body to keep organs alive (American Heart Asso-
ciation). The website BetheBeat.org states, “When you teach the students the two
simple steps of Hands-only CPR, you’re teaching them that if they see an adult or
teen suddenly collapse, they can provide that beat until help arrives.”
Follow these two steps:
1) Call 911
2) Push Hard and fast in the center of the chest.
The Kauai Fire Department is ramping up their efforts to support CPR educa-
tion within Kauai Schools to make a safer community all around. States with the
highest percentages of lives saved through CPR are the states that have strong com-
munity CPR programs in place. We view CPR as a lifelong skill and something stu-
dents take home to their families, friends, and the community.
The 8th grade English classes are currently studying a unit titled, “The Chal-
lenge to Make a Difference.” A part of this curriculum includes developing an un-
derstanding about the Holocaust and examining how one person can make a differ-
ence. On February 8, 8th grade students listened to a guest speaker, Jeannie Op-
dyke-Smith, who related a harrowing tale of her mother’s survival of the
Holocaust as a 17 year old girl growing up in Poland during WWII. The speaker
periodically posed thought provoking questions to the students, such as, “There will
be times in your life when you are faced with a choice, a hard decision. How will you
make that choice?” This unit of study will eventually lead to students making con-
nections to the past by researching challenges in today’s society.
The vision of CKMS states, “E Holomua I Ka Na’auao” ~Progress through
Knowledge, Always Striving, Constantly Learning, and Forever Improving. In order
for CKMS to continue strengthening our school, we need our parents’ input. If you
are a parent or guardian of students in grades 7 & 8, we need your feedback to im-
prove school quality. We respectfully request a few moments of your time to com-
plete the School Quality Survey (SQS). Your honest responses will remain anony-
mous. Please respond by March 15, 2016. The information taken from the survey is extremely useful for schools to
use in planning for improvement and other purposes. Students will be completing the survey through their Advisory
Classes. Parents can use the following link (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2016MiddleHighParents) to take the
survey online.
Please continue to visit Engrade to stay current on your child’s grades and
communicate with teachers as needed. Also, the CKMS
School Website is updated regularly, visit our school
pages to stay current on school events and opportunities.
We thank you for your continued influence and support
of your child’s education.
Sincerely,

Now students don’t have to wait until the end of each quarter to cash in their Hana Maka’i tickets for prizes. Starting this quarter, students who earned Hana Maka’i tickets were entered into weekly prize drawings where winners were announced every Friday morning on CKTV. Students have already taken home over $100 in gift card prizes donated by Sports Authority and Uncle’s Shave Ice. Students still have the opportunity to cash in their tickets at the end of each quarter for prizes, such as name brand surf stick-ers, phone cases, lanyards, pencil cases, playing cards, and more.
Our school’s rewards system has such a positive impact on the overall school culture. This pro-gram relies heavily on community donations to remain successful. Anyone willing to donate please con-tact our PCNC, Jennifer Hreljac at 241-3200 ext. 301. Students continue to express interest in having goodies and treats as possible ticket redemption options.
Students, remember to turn in your Hana Maika’i tickets in your grade levels box located in the li-brary in order to be entered in the weekly prize drawings.
Thank you for demonstrating the 4 P’s! Be Prompt, Be Prepared, Be Productive, Be Polite

Aloha Committee News Our Band Director, Sarah Tochiki, organized a Band Festival featuring students performing solo
and ensembles on Saturday, February 6th. The students did an amazing job in their performances, they
were professionally dressed, and arrived prepared to stun their audience with their specially selected pieces.
This December we bid a sad farewell to Valerie Perreira, a clerk typist in our front office. She
started in 2004, and held many duties and responsibilities. Every morning she cheerfully greeted the staff
by name and the many students she came in contact with. Some of the things that she enjoys doing is
spending time with her family, camping, hiking, going to the beach, and one of her favorite places on the
island is Kokee. If you are at one of these places you may still get to see her or at Kalaheo Elementary
School where she is currently working.

Polar Plunge Kauai 2016
Date: Saturday, March 12th
Registration at 9:30 AM
1st Plunge at 10:00 am
Location: Kapaa Beach Park
Kapaa, Hawaii
Contact: Jocelyn Barriga(808) 652- 8662
Get ready to Bundle up and meet us at the park for the coolest dip you’ll do
all year- not to mention you are creating more opportunities for our athletes to ex-
perience the life-changing benefits of participating in Special Olympics — all at no cost to themselves or
their families.
We invite you to be a brave man, woman or child who will be “freezin’ for a reason” when you
slide down a 20 foot slide into an icy pool of water to support Special Olympics Kaua'i athletes.
It’s easier than you think – and more fun than you can imagine! It’s a fun, family day that changes thou-
sands of lives for the better. Why plunge into a freezing pool of ice water? Call it noble or just plain fun! We come together on
this special day in the spirit of Special Olympics knowing that this one moment of cold will mean a lifetime
of warm and joyful opportunities for our athletes.
CKMS Team Unify is in its third year as part of the Special Olympics Project UNIFY Program.
Special Olympics Hawaii Project UNIFY is an education-based project, which uses the sports and educa-
tion programs of Special Olympics to activate young people across the U.S. in order to promote school
communities where all young people are agents of change – fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for
people with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Hawaii believes that through sports young people can
make a difference in friendships, schools and communities.
Our 2015-2016 CKMS Team Unify consists of 34 middle school students, both students with and
without intellectual disabilities. We have been completing lessons and projects about tolerance, and pro-
moting respect and tolerance within our school community. In April, we will be conducting our 2nd Annual
"Spread the Word to End the Word/ Acceptance Week". Throughout this week, we will be asking our com-
munity to join us in pledging to respect and strengthen our support for our peers with intellectual disabili-
ties within our school and community. Also, we have been participating in unified bowling competitions
and unified track events. We genuinely believe each student involved, whether an athlete or a unified part-
ner, has been impacted positively through this program. They have become agents of change- fostering re-
spect, dignity and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities.
***If you are interested in participating in the Polar Plunge as part of the CKMS Team Unify Special Olym-
pics Team, please contact Amanda Fretto ([email protected]) OR simply sign up on our Team
Page https://www.firstgiving.com/team/313227 Each plunger is asked to raise at least $50. You can also do-
nate on this page if you are unable to take the plunge with us.***
Thank you for your continued support! Money raised with help our CKMS Team Unify track/field relay
teams attend the State Summer Games on Oahu in June 2016. Our team goal this year is $2000.
Our Motto: "We live by dignity, honor, respect, and most of all, tolerance for others."

“Belkis;Regina de Saba Il Sogno di Salomone” By
Ottorino Respighi

Solo and Small Ensemble Festival Results
We had about 200 students perform for our Solo and Ensemble Festival. This event is where stu-
dents prepare solos or small ensemble, each student one on-a-part, and perform that piece for a profes-
sional musician judge from Oahu. All rehearsals are completely student-led. You may have seen students
walking around with medals. These correspond to the difficulty and the rating each student gets. The color
of the ribbon is for the rating, red for EXCELLENT and blue for SUPERIOR. The color of the medal is
for the difficulty, bronze for EASY, silver for INTERMEDIATE, and gold for DIFFICULT.
Regardless of whether they medaled or not, all students should be proud of what they accomplished.

CKMS Art Displayed in Kilauea
Hopefully you were able to see the 1,000 paper cranes art installation on campus last year, but if
not you can stop by Kong Lung Trading in Kilauea. This beautiful collection of our students' hard work is
on display in this historic North Shore boutique. Mrs. Gibbs' students created art papers last year for vari-
ous projects using watercolors, metallic-inked printing techniques, and suminagashi*. These hand-printed
papers made the most magnificent folded cranes which look enchanting in this already appealing space.
Please make an effort to visit and support our students' work.
Mahalo to Kong Lung Trading for supporting the arts and allowing us to
exhibit this installation again.
*Suminagashi or "floating ink" is an art technique that originated in Japan in the 12th century.
It is the process of marbling paper with ink and water.

A Memo from the Crisis Safety Committee
On Tuesday, January 26 students at CKMS participated in a quarterly fire drill with great success.
Students and staff evacuated to the appropriate zones efficiently, walking with purpose. The total time
elapsed from start to finish was 4 minutes and 48 seconds – well done, students and staff! Participating in
these types of drills allows students and staff to practice skills and create routines designed to keep everyone
safe and secure. Success is ensured when everyone knows what to do in an emergency and approaches each
practice drill with a calm and serious manner.
