Message froM david seMon, General Manager, Global Spectrum, Sandler Center for the Performing Arts
As the third season of the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts comes to a close, I am pleased to present this Annual Report of our activities on behalf of the Global Spectrum management team. Fiscal Year 2010 proved to be quite a resounding success for the Sandler Center. We have seen over $1.6 million in gross ticket sales from over 404 events and nearly 90,000 patrons, visitors, and students have walked the halls of this beautiful facility.
Highlights for the year include 14 sold‐out performances, including frankie valli and the four seasons, Michael Mcdonald, natalie Cole, Bryan adams, randy travis, and Harry Connick, Jr. The Sandler Center also hosted the successful seasons of our resident companies, including the virginia symphony orchestra, the virginia Beach forum, virginia Musical theatre, Oddslot Acca Predictions, virginia arts festival, virginia Beach Chorale, Ballet virginia international, and symphonicity.Global Spectrum partnered in several community outreach efforts to provide free entertainment throughout the season. We worked with the City of Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission to provide the free family event “Kids Arts Palooza,” “Why Not Wednesdays? Free Summer Concert Series” on the Plaza, and special student matinees for Virginia Musical Theatre and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Global Spectrum is also very pleased to have participated in the United Way’s “Day of Caring” and the Town Center Race Festival, presented by Town Center Kiwanis, benefiting nearly 20 Hampton Roads charities.
Global Spectrum, in cooperation with the Virginia Arts Festival, is pleased to have welcomed over 4,650 students to the Sandler Center to participate in diverse educational opportunities with some of the most accomplished artists in the world. These educational events were successful in broadening students’ cultural and artistic exposure, and ensured the Sandler Center arts programming remained accessible to children in our community.
The upcoming season promises to be even more exciting as the Sandler Center welcomes world‐renowned artists like Bruce Hornsby, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny rogers, Brad garrett, and Motown legends the temptations & the four tops. We are thrilled to have exciting family shows included in our upcoming season: if You give a Cat a Cupcake, star trek Live, and the aluminum show. The Sandler Center is also excited to present several world‐class theatrical shows, including: neil Berg’s 101 Years of Broadway, savion glover: soLo in tiMe, Merchants of Bollywood, and the Broadway sensation, the Color Purple.
We at Global Spectrum are proud to provide our community with a world-class venue for world-class artists, and a phenomenal fourth season of great performances. We look forward to continuing our mission to serve as one of the region’s finest cultural centers and to remain a steadfast community landmark for the City of Virginia Beach.

We have also been able to retain our status as a state certified “Virginia Green” and “Energy Star Efficient” facility.
Although praise from critics, patrons, and artists has been constant since the opening of the Sandler Center in November of 2007, we took special note this season to some of the comments made by the artists that have played our stage.
“It’s not very often that we play in venues where the staff is just as great as the hall. This has been great!” – Michael McDonald
“In all of the places I have traveled and performed, this is definitely the top 1 or 2 rooms I have ever played in. You should be very proud to have such a beautiful venue in your city. Really, one of the nicest rooms I have ever played in. Truly beautiful.” – Harry Connick, Jr.
“What a hall. This is fantastic!” – Paul Anka

free PuBLiC tours of tHe sandLer CenterThe Sandler Center now provides free weekly tours of the facility starting at 2pm every Tuesday throughout the year and 7pm every Wednesday throughout the summer to anyone who wishes to attend. The official tour guide, Dean Doss, has starred on Broadway, worked with renowned architects in New York City, and sailed down the Nile in Egypt, making him uniquely suited to reveal insider lore about this stunning performing arts center. He recounts stories about the stars, allows patrons to explore the dressing rooms, takes everyone up onstage to test out the acoustics, and demonstrates to all who are interested how the state‐of‐the‐art stage and lighting work. Tours often include impromptu performances by Dean on the Sandler Center’s Steinway piano, so that touring patrons can hear the hall’s incredible acoustics first hand.
sandLer Center staff PartiCiPates in nationaL daY of CaringThe staff at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach, VA, visited Creeds Elementary School in Pungo, a rural area of Virginia Beach recognized for its farmland and marshy wetlands, as a part of the National Day of Caring 2009. The Sandler Center partnered with Creeds Elementary School to develop a project that would take an unfortunate landscaping accident and transform it into a beautiful, outdoor biology classroom. For years, the school has been susceptible to flooding with a small lake appearing and remaining in the middle of the grounds after every rainfall. Now with the help of the Sandler Center staff, Creeds Elementary will now turn that muddy lake into a beautiful “Frog Bog,” complete with wooden pier, railings, and fun, hand-painted stepping stones. The Sandler Center staff helped to paint, relocate, and position the stones for the “Frog Bog,” and offered to extend its assistance past the Day of Caring to help the school complete the entire project by the end of Spring 2010.

our PeoPLeThe Sandler Center knows that one of its greatest assets is the commitment and dedicated support it receives from community volunteers. The sheer number of hours these individuals have given to the facility is immeasurable. They perform essential tasks such as greeting, ushering, staffing the office reception desk, assisting with coat check, clerical work, and various other venue needs. Coming from all walks of life, these art lovers bring experience that spans the professional spectrum. Alongside the dedicated Global Spectrum Facility Management and part‐time staff, they become the glue that keeps the Sandler Center strong. Every year, the Sandler Center pays tribute to its volunteers by hosting a sit‐down reception and artistic event in their honor. This year, more than 150 volunteers enjoyed a Mexican fiesta that culminated with Salsa lessons and a candy-filled pinata.
The Global Spectrum Facility Management staff at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts is made up of some of the hardest working individuals in the business—ones who have truly committed themselves to ensuring the Sandler Center provides an extraordinary customer experience for every patron who walks through the hall doors. Our team has expanded to accommodate the growing number of performances we have added this season. Our venue now features 9 full‐time management positions, 10 part‐time/seasonal administrative staff, 150 part‐time event staff, 2 interns, and a staggering 200 volunteers.

Letter froM tHe President, Annie Sandler
Cultural life in Virginia Beach took a giant leap forward in 2007, when the City of Virginia Beach raised the curtain on the star-studded inaugural season at the beautiful Sandler Center for the Performing Arts. Since then we have had scores of performances, concerts and events that have kept the momentum of the Sandler Center going throughout our third season.
The 2009-2010 season proved to be even more exciting than our previous year as the Sandler Center welcomed world-renowned artists like Bryan Adams, Natalie Cole, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Brian Wilson, Randy Travis, Paul Anka and Harry Connick, Jr. The Sandler Center also presented several world-class theatrical shows, including Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandex, MOMIX: The Best of MOMIX, TAP DOGS, and the timeless musical, Camelot.
Among the cultural accomplishments, professional acknowledgements, and artistic accolades, perhaps the most telling reviews come from the patrons. The residents and visitors who consistently marvel at the beauty, intimacy and unparalleled acoustics that the Sandler Center boasts.
More than $1.64 million in tickets were sold for Sandler Center performances during the third season. In turn, these sales generated $146,524 in admission taxes for the City, helping to keep facility operations well within the projected budget. The shops and restaurants that share Town Center with the Sandler Center make the experience of attending a performance a one-stop entertainment for all. The Center makes a compelling centerpiece to this beautiful residential and business area, serving as a symbol of the City’s growth as both a corporate and cultural mecca.
The Sandler Center is proud to house some of the region’s finest arts organizations, including the acclaimed Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Musical Theatre, Virginia Beach Forum, Virginia Arts Festival, Ballet Virginia International, Virginia Beach Chorale, and Symphonicity: The Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach. These resident companies give a unique local flair to the Sandler Center, and they have most certainly contributed to its success this season by hosting 141 events and bringing over 27,900 patrons through our doors.
More than the revenue generated, one of the greatest accomplishments of the past year is the number of students who visited the Sandler Center. Over 4,650 students walked the halls of the Center to participate in specially designed matinees and master classes, featuring presentations and performances by some of the finest artists in the world.
On behalf of the entire Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to extend an enthusiastic “Thank You” to all the volunteers, staff members, each and every subscriber and audience participant who helped make the third season such a terrific success. Finally, I would also like to express the Board’s heartfelt and ongoing appreciation to the Virginia Beach City Council for all of their support. We look forward to an even more successful fourth season!
Dear Friends,
Sincerely,
Foundation

EducationeduCationThe arts play a vital role in education, and the Sandler Center is proud to play an important role in bringing engaging, meaningful arts experiences to young people in our communities. With the ultimate goal of “every child, every grade, every year,” the Sandler Center’s student matinees, teaching tools, master classes, and in-school performances give thousands of area school children opportunities to experience great music, theatre, and dance, study alongside world renowned artists, and discover new ways of learning through the arts.
19
Education Education
20
During the 2009/2010 season, the Sandler Center offered two student matinees based on children’s books that were geared towards elementary-aged school children. In October, the house was packed for the student matinee presentation of The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Students followed Harold as he created a world to explore, using nothing more than a big purple crayon and his sky’s the limit imagination. In January, Tomie DePaola’s Strega Nona: The Musical, sold out, filling the hall with elementary school students delighted by the staging of this classic children’s story. Back in the classroom, their teachers used the free Comprehensive Study Guide provided by the Sandler Center to incorporate the experience into the curriculum, with writing assignments about the play designed to refine the students’ critical thinking skills, social studies explorations of world cultures like Strega Nona’s small town in Italy, and even math problems that draw from events in the play. All of the assignments are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL’s).
But students don’t always have to come to the Sandler Center to benefit from its education programs. Through in-school artist residencies, the Center brings artists directly to the students. In January, for the second year in a row, the critically acclaimed Boston Brass performed in area elementary, middle and high schools. Known for their “astounding talent and A-plus performances” (Utah Daily Chronicle), the ensemble played a mix of classical, jazz, and pop music, giving many area students a taste of music they had never heard before, and the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the music and the performers.
aCCess tHe arts PrograMDriven by a passion to reach students that might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the great works of music, dance and theatre the Sandler Center has to offer, the Sandler Center Foundation developed a new and exciting program entitled “ACCESS the ARTS” to reach the at-risk and underserved students in Title 1 schools throughout Virginia Beach. This new program will provide financial assistance to the schools and programs by covering the costs of the current arts educational programs at the Sandler Center. Through this innovative program, the Foundation hopes to bring even more children to the Center each year to experience the arts!

Special EventsKids arts PaLooZaThe Sandler Center was packed with kids of all ages for the Annual Kids Arts Palooza, sponsored in part by the Virginia Beach Arts and Humanities Commission, on January 16, 2010. Over 2,500 children and parents took part in this free event that included face painting, balloon animals, costumed cartoon characters, kid-friendly crafts and performances and free performances by Symphonicity and the Virginia Stage Company.
wHY not wednesdaYsEvery Wednesday May 12 through September 8 from 5 to 9 p.m., the Sandler Center proudly hosted the 2nd Annual Why Not Wednesdays? Free Summer Concert Series. Just like last season, the summer’s series was complete with live outdoor entertainment by some of the region’s hottest acts, fun children’s activities, food, drinks and—new this year—fresh produce and farm market goodies for purchase. Hampton Roads residents and vacationers from all walks of life can enjoyed the free, family-friendly concerts every week throughout the summer on the Sandler Center’s Outdoor Plaza. All proceeds from the sale of food, beverages and table rentals went to the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts Foundation to support arts education and enhance the programming at the Sandler Center.

Mardi gras MasqueradeNew Orleans came to Virginia Beach for one festive evening at the Sandler Center on February 19, 2010. The “Mardi Gras Masquerade,” hosted by the Sandler Center Foundation, transformed the Miller Studio Theatre into an elegant masquerade party complete with feathered masks and lavish gold, purple and green décor for an evening that was not to be missed. Guests were serenaded by a jazz ensemble reminiscent of those on Bourbon Street while feasting on some of the finest Louisiana inspired dishes like crawfish cakes, jambalaya, and shrimp shooters. Following the festivities, attendees were treated to a memorable performance by New Orleans native Harry Connick, Jr., adding a perfect ending to a spectacular evening.
viP sPeCiaL reCognitionThroughout the year, donors and special guests enjoyed VIP access to Great Performance Series events. Donors were invited to meet several artists this season in private receptions following each performance. Highlights during the 2009/2010 season included Meet & Greets with artists like Michael McDonald, Paul Anka, Harry Connick, Jr. and Randy Travis.
