1 Message from Mr Deepak Atal –MD of APPL Dear All, A little background which you may be aware of, World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It is hosted every year by a different city and commemorated internationally on 5th June every year. Each Country has their unique manner of focusing and showcasing the flight path to empower each one their citizens to become agents of sustainable and equitable development, to change their attitude towards the environment and advocate a bonding between each human being and each society to ensure a safe future. The 2014 theme for World Environment Day will focus on ‘Small Islands and Climate Change’, the official slogan for the year 2014 is ‘Raise Your Voice Not the Sea Level. As we moves toward the 22nd Century, we are left with no choice but to redefine the values and principles that underlie our relationship with the earth. A new approach is required, creating a Sustainability Culture. Technology has brought about an abundance of goods and services, but also an obsession for materialism and a distortion of human values. Achieving Environmental Equity is the challenge going forward Organic Hathikuli is our flagship initiative. The fundamental objective of the conversion to organic was to maintain the ecological balance of a biodiversity hot spot and prevent any further environmental degradation in the areas adjoining the World Heritage Site – Kaziranga National Park. APPL is also the first company to use Bio Fertilizers and Bio Pesticides in conventional estates- enhancing fertility naturally while at the same time reducing chemical load on the soil. We are the only Plantation Company to have a Social Accountability Certification – SA 8000. We continue to be ETP Compliant and two of our Estates are in the process of being Rain Forest B Certified. Achievements we can all be justifiably be proud of. Our company personifies a balanced focus on People, Planet, Profits and we are fore runners in skill development and the fostering social impact initiatives. Giving back to the communities in which we work. However while we embark on corporate endeavors across our estates to mark this day I would call upon each and every of us in the APPL family to make this a start of a sustained and dedicated effort in our everyday lives to protect the planet. Buy products that are recycled, Unplug idle electronic devices, use cloth bags for shopping, use rechargeable batteries, cover pots while cooking. Simple things like not running the tap while brushing your teeth uses 1.12 ltr of water while brushing with the tap on consumes 18 ltrs….Thought provoking. Let us make this not just a commemorative day but a new beginning, let us walk our talk and make this world a better place for you for me for all eternity. Message from Mr Deepak Atal –MD of APPL

Dear All,

A little background which you may be aware of, World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.

Achieving Environmental Equity is the challenge going forward

Organic Hathikuli is our flagship initiative.

Best wishesDeepak Atal, MD –APPL

My warm greetings to all colleagues on the occasion of World Environment Day. The objective of celebrating this day is to create global awareness on environmental issues

& impacts on humans. I believe that such events empower & engage employees as active agents of sustainable and equitable develop-ment. We are happy that today’s event brings together all of us in the group companies, factories, offices, JVs, subsidiaries & alliances across the world. We are releasing the Sustainability booklet that lists down the best practices in TGBL compiled from the case studies for the Sustainability Awards 2013. We are also aligning the theme of the company’s annual report to sustainability and this should be released in the coming month. The Tata Group celebrates the Tata Sustainability Month campaign throughout June 2014, and we will connect with them for some common themes and competitions.

The purpose statement of TGB states “create magical beverage moments for consumers and sustainable goodness for our commu-nities.” It is worth noting here that the focus on community and sustainability is built into our purpose statement, and is one of the 10 strategic commandments for TGB. Our 5 pillars of Sustainability include water management, climate change, waste management (including both pre-consumer and post-consumer wastes), ethical sourcing and community development. To be the sustainability lead-er in the natural beverages business, we should aim to be water and carbon neutral, zero waste to landfill, 100% ethical supply chain, and we shall also invest some of our profits in community devel-opment.

We support the livelihood and better living conditions of tea com-munities across the world. Our ethical sourcing strategy in Africa is supported by our trusted partner Ethical Tea Partnership, and we are committed to the Rain Forest Alliance certification of all Tetley brands by 2016. All the plantations in KDHP, Watawala and Tata Coffee are certified to Rain Forest Alliance standards. During the last year, we have joined hands with HUL and the Tea Board of India to launch trustea - an ambitious initiative to sustainably transform the Indian tea industry. The program aims to sustainably transform 500 million Kg of tea from India in close cooperation with the Indi-an tea industry stakeholders.

TGB is a leader in Climate Disclosure Leadership Index CDLI In-dia 2013. We are ranked 1st in the consumer staples sector and 6th overall. Our climate change strategy includes energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and sustainable forestry. Our carbon intensity reduced by 22% over the past 2 years. In this disclosure, we reported 69 sites including factories, offices, planta-tions & warehouses. By virtue of our good CDP score, we are also listed on the BSE Carbonex Index.

In all humility we must confess that TGB is at the beginning of its journey to being a truly sustainable company. We have pockets of excellence in different parts of the world - the Eagelscliffe factory in the UK is zero waste to landfill but we have many other factories

that aren’t. We use very little renewable energy, and this could be a focus area in the coming years - not only to reduce our carbon footprint, but also to ensure our energy security.

TGBL has a large water footprint that goes into tea, coffee and water business. There is a strong strategic focus on water manage-ment in TGB. Tata Coffee has taken the lead in preserving water resources for communities and the environment. Tata Coffee does not withdraw groundwater for coffee cultivation by constructing storage reservoirs of 588 million gallons. It is important to share these learnings and best practices across the organization.

We have a legacy of community work for the tea communities in Munnar and the coffee communities in Coorg. During the year, we were proud of the 3 medal winners from Swastha at the Special Asia Pacific Games held in Australia. But a lot needs to be done for the global communities in all the geographies where we are located.

The Tata Affirmative Action (AA) Programme in India is another Tata Group effort to give back to the community. This program commits Tata companies in India to a plan for the upliftment of certain com-munities that have been historically disadvantaged. TGB has made significant progress in these initiatives in the past few years. It is encouraging to note that many colleagues and teams have taken up AA initiatives in their KRAs. AA initiatives in India are driven primarily from Munnar and Bangalore, and we would like to broad base this in the coming years.

All these efforts are certainly replicable and make business sense – consumers like and buy products that have been sourced and produced sustainably and ethically, employees feel proud to be as-sociated with a company that has a focus on sustainability. There-fore, while a lot remains to be done, a focus on sustainability is holistically a good thing to do for all our stakeholders. Companies that have embarked on this journey must resolve to accelerate, col-laborate, co-create, and be unwavering in the quest for minimising the carbon footprint, water footprint, and to pursue sustainable practices despite the current macro economic situation. On the World Environment Day, let us resolve to be a leading proponent of sustainable beverage production and consumption in the world
