Message from the Acting Principal Year 12 Formal A glittering occasion on Friday 9th November at Oaklands. Our stu- dents were splendid in their gowns and suits, in fact the Year 12 boys may have piped the girls in the fashion stakes with their very colourful and unusual choice of a ‘bag of fruit’. Romy Cook and Sam Collins kept the gathering amused with the obligatory Year 12 Awards while in the background was Tia Filmer’s power point telling a little of this groups history. It was fantastic to see past Principals Mr Andrew Duch- esne and Mr Colin May along with a large number of present day staff and families supporting the students. Many thanks must go to Romy Cook, Jade Bramble and Tia Filmer. Mrs Mel Woods, Mrs Kirsty Umbers, Ms Aimee Hay and Mrs Rachel Uhl- man who without their tiresome work and organisation made a night to remember. We also thank Oaklands for their support of our College. Examinations and Reports Year 9 and 10 completed their exams this week and my thanks must go to Mr Shannon who has ensured a smooth and effective exam week. Mr Shannon is now ensuring that reports are collated and will be handed out at Presentation evening. For Year 9, this was their first experience of this type of testing over a number of days and will be a great experience leading to eventually the HSC. Year 10 have also completed the all-important ‘All My Own Work’ program, a requirement for all students moving in to Year 11. HSC: All My Own Work is a program designed to help HSC students follow the principles and practices of good scholarship. This includes understanding, valuing and using ethical practices when locating and using information as part of their HSC studies. Students who have completed the program will also know about penal- ties for cheating and how to avoid malpractice when preparing their work for assessment. To be eligible for the HSC, students must complete HSC: All My Own Work (or its equivalent) before they submit any work for Preliminary (Year 11) or HSC (Year 12). HSC Success Declan Harley and Quin Robinson have been nominated for possible inclusion in Shape 2018, the annual exhibition of a selection of ex- emplary Major Projects developed by HSC Design and Technology, Industrial Technology and Textiles and Design students. We wish them well and hope their projects are selected for the exhibition. They and are certainly worthy nominees. The exhibition will be at the Powerhouse Museum, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), Sydney, from 22 February to 5 May 2019. 2 Max Slater Drive, Bega 2550 PO Box 994 Bega 2550 Phone: 6494 7777 Email: [email protected] website: scac.nsw.edu.au NOVEMBER 23, 2018

Ten Commandments in DevotionsThese past few weeks have been a focus on the ten commandments. This week we looked at the last three commandments.

Staff Changes Mrs Winterflood has taken long service leave and will not be back until next year. Hope she has a relaxing break as she travels overseas. Our College is growing! Mr Shannon and I have been able to negotiate for a new Stage 1 teacher and English/HSIE teacher to commence in 2019. Advertisements are in the media and we look forward to inter-viewing new staff before the end of the year. With Mrs Katherine Haynes relinquishing her position as Chaplain we will also be advertising for a Chaplain to commence in 2019. We thank Mrs Jenny Weber for her work teaching God’s word this term.

Upcoming Events this WeekWith our Newsletter going to publication early this week, I should just mention the Year 6 Graduation and Year 6 Excursion to University of Wollongong (Bega Campus). The excursion is a look into the future for Year 6 and to attempt to show them what may lie ahead for many of them. We look forward to Mr Lambie’s report in the next newsletter. The biggest event this year for year 6 is their Graduation on Thursday. This year will be no different as Mrs Russell and Year 5 set up and decorate the staff lunch room and library in a ‘Hollywood’ theme this year. Thanks you Mrs Russell and Year 5 and Mrs Alexander and her team for supplying dinner.

Work Health and Safety ImprovementsI am amazed at the number and quality of our fund raising and prepara-tion of meals both formal and informal. Many if not all our staff are keen to support any sausage sizzle and dinner. Students too, are becom-ing expert at these hospitality skills mainly due to the likes of Mrs Wood and Mr Arbon who are at the forefront of giving our college a point of difference. With all this happening, all staff have embarked on upskilling their cre-dentials and are completing an online food preparation and Handling course offered by Environmental Health Australia and Bega Valley Council. Many of our students will also complete this accredited free course. https://imalert.com.au/v6/?sub=begavalley

Presentation EveningOur Sapphire Coast Anglican College’s 24th Annual Presentation Ceremony on Wednesday 12 December 2018. This will take place at Merri-winga Auditorium, Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre, Zingel Place and will commence at 5.30pm. Parents and guests should be seated no later than 5.20pm.All prize winners will be required to arrive no later than 5pm. Parents and student prize winners will be notified shortly. This event will celebrate the exceptional performance of our students. We very much hope you will be able to join us for what we hope will be an enjoyable evening of entertainment and celebration of success. Please feel free to contact the College should you require any further information regarding our Annual Presentation Ceremony, and I would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate your child on this nomination. As this is the most formal occasion on the college calendar, all students are required to wear their summer uniform and Senior students will need to wear their blazer.

Armistice Day March and Ceremony“This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Each year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we stop to ob-serve one minute of silence to remember those who served and died in wars and armed conflicts. While the fighting stopped on 11 November 1918 as a result of separate armistices being signed with Austria, Bul-garia, Germany, Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, the war did not of-ficially end until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919. What followed was an annual armistice commemoration on 11 Novem-ber, which became known as Remembrance Day after World War II.”Nicole Brangwin Update to a 2008 paper by Brooke McDonagh and Laura Rayner Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security Section. This extract sums up the need for our continued remembrance. This year our College represented by Neera Sakunthai and Aleesha Dummett laid a wreath to remember the fallen. It was gratifying to see students from Kindergarten to the senior years supporting this event. Thank you to staff and parents who marched with us.Mr Rod Tuynman

News from 3/4WBy Lynda WhymanA big thankyou goes out to Miss Stephens for having 3/4W while Mrs Whyman was away. It was wonderful having her keep a smooth daily routine at this busy time.3/4W have been really considering the impact we humans have on our environment. We have researched Kosciusko and looked at recreational sports, their impacts, and opinions from different perspectives. We en-joyed watching the local Fogo video and advertisements which included Costa from Better Homes and Gardens and some of our school students. We are just starting to fine tune our play practise and make backdrops. Our plan is for the students to contribute as much as they can to mak-ing parents, friends and relatives relax and enjoy a fantastic end of year get together. Please book your tickets now. Performances will start at 5.30pm along with a BBQ outside the gym. See you there!

CongratulationsBy David Willis

There were two great per-formances during the week-end, featuring our talented students, which I would like to acknowledge. On Satur-day, I was asked to host a segment of the entertainment at Merimbula McDonald’s McHappy Day. It was won-derful to experience Harrison Marshall’s vocal and guitar solo. On Sunday, a few of our stu-dents featured at the Four Winds Youth Festival. Con-gratulations to our HSC graduate, Jasper Lay, and the SCAC String Ensemble for their great music and professional attitude. Thanks to our string tutor, Mr John Gould, for all his help this year. I am happy to say that the String Ensemble will be playing at our Presen-tation Evening on Wednesday 12th December.

Concert BandThanks to the members of our Concert Band who attend rehearsals be-fore school every Tuesday morning. They too will be performing at our Presentation Evening. Their dedication and musical contribution is always much appreciated.

Primary Christmas ConcertIt’s great to witness the team effort from the Primary students and staff in preparation for their Christmas presentation - The Magical Christmas Jigsaw on Thursday, 29th December. Don’t forget to book early as seats are selling fast.

This Year in CareersBy Deb MeersOur students have done some amazing things in careers this year:• Year 12 became university students for the day making their way

around the campus and attending lectures at the University of Wol-longong Discovery Day

• Year 10 completed a term of Careers Lessons learning how to iden-tify professions that suit them and how to pursue employment, write application letters and resumes, learn about how to start a job and what to know about the work place.

• All year 10 and 12 students had individual careers interviews to as-sist their plans for the future.

• Year 10 and 11 attended the Canberra Careers Expo, explored career opportunities and met with education providers and employers.

• Many students attended Canberra Open Day along with other univer-sities and colleges

• Hamish and Kallen commenced School Based Apprenticeships• Callum, Tegan and William undertook transition to work activities• Blake, Kallen, Jade, Nathaniel, Joanna and Emily undertook one of

their senior subjects at TAFE. Blake and Kallen studied Automotive in year 11, Jade completed two years of Early Childhood studies and Nathaniel, Emily and Joanna undertook Animal Studies.

• A number of year 12 students including Tia and Sebastian received early entry offers to the University of Wollongong and Charles Sturt University respectively.

• Sam Collins received early entry into Paramedics at Charles Sturt University, Port Macquarie.

• Year 10 students all completed or are about to undertake a week of work experience.

We have had many exciting year 10 work experience opportunities happening including; Findlay heading to The Powerhouse Museum Sydney to be a curator, Nicholas helping out at Football NSW with a major sporting event, Tye working with the snow groomers at Perisher Resort, Archie and Louise joining the army at Royal Military College Duntroon, Racheal attending a Women in the Navy Camp at HMAS Albatross, Duncan attending the RAAF Base at Richmond, Sarah trying out sonography in Canberra, Callum working at Bald Hills Engineering and Amelia spending time with the animals at Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo. These were just a few of the awesome placements for our year 10 students.

Please catch up with Debbie Meers, Careers Advisor if you would like to discuss any plans for next year.

GRIP Leadership Conference By Luke Walters (Prefect) On Friday the 16th of November the school leadership team consisting of Kate Oastler, Neera Sakunthai, Aleesha Dummett, Liam Sutherland, Emily Smith and Luke Walters journeyed to Canberra’s AIS to better our understanding of leadership. The journey began with a cold crisp 5:00 am morning in a van driven by Mrs Hoynes, heading express over the treacherous mountain ranges to Cooma McDonalds for a healthy breakfast boost. The leadership conference, held by the GRIP Leadership association, was packed with inspiration, interaction and insightful learning about becoming a great leadership team. Succeeding the conference the jour-ney home began. Burning fossil fuels like an American power plant, the van carried the team to Cooma KFC and Subway. Each of the leaders’ minds exploding with fresh ideas to improve the school and maintain the values that have been put in place by the previous leadership team of 2017-2018. It was a great experience and we cannot wait to work with the students to implement our ideas!

Student Leave During School Time

A reminder about the changes to the Education Act in recent years. Student leave during school time is to be at a minimum and only permissible for significant pastoral reasons and in consultation with the school. All families must contact the school regarding leave prior to any booking being made. Any holiday that has been booked without school consultation may impact on your child's assessment results.

Please read the detailed outline of the changes:

As outlined in the newsletter there have been changes made to the NSW Attendance Codes. These changes have been implemented to ensure nationally consistent parameters for the collection and reporting of student attendance data.

In schools, there are 3 acceptable reasons for a student's non-attendance at school. These are:

• Sickness • Leave • Exemption

If a Principal does not accept that a student's non-attendance satisfies the criteria for one of these categories, the absence will be recorded as unexplained.

As part of the implementation of the National Standards, holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods will now be included as absences and no longer in exemption from attendance. Parents are encouraged to holiday during the school holiday period. Students at SAPPHIRE COAST ANGLICAN COLLEGE enjoy extensive holiday periods and parents are discouraged from requesting additional holiday leave during term time because of the disruption that this may cause to their student's academic and wellbeing program.

If you require leave or exemptions, please note that this may impact on your student's assessments if they are scheduled during their absence. Each request for leave or exemption will be reviewed and a decision will be made as to whether the leave is approved or unapproved.

The process for exemption remains the same - however as outlined above holidays will not be granted an exemption.

Page 8: Message from the Acting Principal€¦ · serve one minute of silence to remember those who served and died in wars and armed conflicts. While the fighting stopped on 11 November

Inspiring Excellence - 8

Request for Exemption Process

Principals have the authority to grant an exemption from attendance at school for certain reasons including:

• exceptional domestic circumstances, but not including participation in family holidays during school term, subject to being satisfied that this is in the best educational interests of the child.

• other exceptional circumstances such as the health of the student where sick leave or alternative enrolment is not appropriate.

• the child being prevented from attending school because of a direction under section 42D of the Public Health Act 1991

• employment in the entertainment industry or participation in elite sporting events for short periods of time (From DET Exemption from School - Procedures)

.

• Parents will submit the application and supporting documentation, where requested, to the Principal.

• The Principal will consider the application in accordance with the criteria in the guidelines from the NSW Department of Education and Communities.

• Where the application is supported the Principal will provide the original exemption certificate to the parent/s

• Students must collect the Leave from School Assessment Form • Where the application is not supported the Principal will notify the parents in writing of the

unsuccessful outcome

Request for Leave Process

Absence Other than Sick Leave (LEAVE)

Principals in NSW schools have the authority to record non-sick leave in a school year for students of compulsory school age who are absent and whose parents have provided an acceptable explanation of the absence. The absence may be due to:

• misadventure or an unforseen event • participation in special events not related to the school • travel in Australia or overseas • domestic necessity, such as the serious illness of an immediate family member • attendance at funerals • recognised religious festivals or ceremonial occasions

(From NSW Attendance Register Codes)

If your child is absent from school due to any of the above reasons, the absence will be recorded on the Attendance Register as Leave from School. A note of explanation is to be given to the College for 1 - 2 days. For 3 or more days, parents are required to complete an Application for Leave form.

Page 9: Message from the Acting Principal€¦ · serve one minute of silence to remember those who served and died in wars and armed conflicts. While the fighting stopped on 11 November

Inspiring Excellence - 9

Where possible it is requested that the school be provided with at least 4 weeks' term time notice.

• For absences of three (3) or more days, submit the leave form to the Principal • Students must collect the Leave form from reception. • Parents will be informed of decision. • Year 11 and 12 students need to be reminded that they are to be present at school for the

full day and coming late or leaving early is unacceptable. This may incur partial or full absence on the student’s record at the Principal's discretion.

Record of School Achievement – attendance in relation to satisfactory completion of a

Stage 5 course (Year 11 and 12)

Where a student’s attendance pattern may jeopardise the satisfactory completion of a mandatory and/or Stage 5 course, the reason for absence and its likely effect on the student’s course progress should be established.

Principals will consider:

• the nature and duration of the absence; • the standing of the student within the course at the time of the absence; • the student’s prior pattern of attendance, application and achievement; and • the ability and commitment of the student to compensate for the classroom experiences missed.

Leave may be granted to cover absence from the school’s educational program for short periods, provided that the reason for the absence is substantial and that the progress of the student towards course outcomes will not be unduly affected.

When leave is granted by the principal, such leave should not, of itself, jeopardise the student’s eligibility for the Record of School Achievement.

In cases of prolonged absence and/or where the principal is not satisfied that course completion criteria can be met or that progress can be maintained, the principal may judge that catching up is not feasible. As far as possible, early warning of the consequences for a student of such an absence should be given. The warning must relate the absence to the non-completion of course requirements.

Thank you for your understanding and support in these changes applied in all schools.

If you have any queries please contact me the Principal or the Director of Studies.

Kind regards,

Rod Tuynman (Acting Principal)

Agriculture is deeply embedded in the Bega Valley. It is the soil and mountains, valleys and watercourses and the lifeblood of many in our area.Agriculture is integral to education at the College. It starts in kindergarten,

forms part of the learning through out Primary school and is a highly functioning subject as Agricultural Technology in both 7-10 and

Preliminary and HSC Agriculture in senior years.

The programmes of study provide a range of practical and hands on activities to build skills and knowledge. Our 60 acres of land allow

the students ample opportunity to work with a variety of animals and experience plant production and horticulture.

Along with this students experience excursions outside the valley to understand agribusiness and best practice in a variety of places. We go

fishing at Jindabyne, agvision in Junee, the Royal Easter Show in Sydney and viticulture in Lakes Entrance to name a few.

Sapphire Coast Anglican College Agriculture programmes are aimed at encouraging all students to learn and enjoy, to build on their strengths and

to challenge them with new experiences.

In 2019 we will have both Agricultural Technology A and Agricultural Technology B courses as well as Preliminary and HSC Agriculture.

Students who have studied Agriculture at the College have gone onto great careers in Veterinary Science, Agronomy, Animal studies, Agriculture teaching, Equine Studies, ANSTO and written articles for Nature magazine

in New York. The possibilities are immense. The foundations of these careers were nurtured at school.

Agriculture is thriving at Sapphire Coast Anglican College and we encourage anyone who has an interest or passion for this essential career

to come and visit to experience what we can offer.
