Message from the EditorBro. David A. Aponte, 32º
Charles Dickens, one of my favorite British authors, began his novel “ATale of Two Cities” with the following line: “It was the best of times, it wasthe worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, itwas the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season ofLight, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winterof despair,…” If we observe our society today, we might all agree that theprevious words truly reflect our present social surroundings. However, withall these contradictions we see, December becomes special for all as we observea continual light as beacons of faith, love, hope and charity.
Every year, December gives us the opportunity to live and capture thosebeacons of faith, love, hope and charity. It is a light of energy that reconnectsthe synapses of our hidden genes of faith, charity, goodness and love. Itenergizes our rededication to our purpose as human beings. We beginDecember with Hanukkah, which means dedication, energizing ourrededication to a higher purpose. The light from the Menorah sheds on us loveto family and friends, a faith reinforced with positive behavior and reflectingthe light of charity to family and society. Next comes Christmas were ourbeacons are further energized. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesuswhose light gives us faith for the unknown, love towards all humanity, and asense of salvation through the many opportunities we get to redeem ourselvesand become better individuals. The month ends with Kawanzaa, a moremodern and recent celebration. With its seven candles it culminate Decemberenergy of light with a message of purpose, of unity with our family andcommunity, respect for those who came before us, being responsible withourselves, our families and others, and being creativity to make things betterfor all.
This is why December is so special and unique. The celebrations duringthe month is one of a sentimental and spiritual light. One that stretches out toeach of us to become better individuals. And I ask each of you, isn’t this whatwe as Freemasons aspire to? Does December need to remind us every year ofthe very nature of our society? What will it take for you to shine your lightand become a beacon of faith, love, hope and charity to yourself, your familyand your community? Freemasonry proclaims we take good men and makethem better. This is the season to commit ourselves to begin that proposition.I invite you to become that Freemason and that human being you aspire to be.Let each of us become those beacons of love, charity and hope for our society.
I end this message with one more thing, Happy Holidays to you and yourlove ones all on behalf of our SGIG, Ill. Al Jorgensen, Bro. Jim Mendoza, 32ºKCCH, Personal Representative and all the Officers of the Valley of Tacoma.

How can I help?
That was the question I asked as I stood before you announcedas the new Personal Representative. I also stated that I was eagerto work with all of you to help move our Valley forward; but inorder to do so we just need to know what “forward” means. Tothat end, Brother Ken Gibson was commissioned to develop asurvey to determine what needed to be addressed to help us define“forward”.
My thanks to the more than 60 brethren have submittedresponses to date. While I am told that this is a good response rate(and will result in your Personal Representative covering the costof the dinner prior to January’s installation), it would be nice tohear from more of you. During my tenure as Grand Master, I askedthe brethren to “Be the Difference” in helping to shape the futureof Washington Freemasonry. Responding to the survey is one waythat you can “Be the Difference” in shaping the future of ourValley.
The survey can be accessed athttps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/tacomavalley.
The results will be shared first with the principal officers of theValley, and then with the Valley at large at our nextcommunication. They will serve as guide in developing plans andin making the necessary changes to move us “forward”.
I am eager with anticipation for the results of the survey andfor the work that lies ahead. Beyond the survey, if you happen tohave an answer to my question – “How can I help?” – I’d love tohear it.

The famous Rosslyn Chapel outside of Edinburgh Scotland has been a Meccafor scholars and historians. It is a compelling place to study both religioussymbolism and more mysterious hints of possible esoteric alternate historysecrets. On its walls, ceilings and floors, thousands of hand carved figures andornamental decorations depict everything from well known Christian symbolsto others that would have been considered adopted from pagan religions. Perhapsin a part of the world strongly influenced by Celtic and Druid beliefs, such anunusual mixture of icons was not that surprising in a chapel built by Catholicsof that time.
One of the most controversial symbols found in Rosalyn is that of an ear ofcorn. Alternative historians have argued that when the chapel was built, cornwas not a staple in any part of northern Europe. This fact was supposed to lendcredence to the legend that one of the ancestors of the Sinclair family that builtRosslyn, Prince Henry Sinclair, made a mysterious voyage to the new world ahundred years before Columbus, where he was introduced to corn as raised bythe native Indians. Although the original Prince Henry was of Norse descent andprobably had the seafaring blood of his ancestral Viking heritage, there is nosolid proof that the journey was ever accomplished. Other historians argue fora Masonic relationship to the ear of corn, as corn symbolically represented oneof the ancient methods of payment to the original builders of King Solomon’stemple. Here again Rosslyn does not give up its secrets easily, as corn is but oneof several symbols found there that also occur in masonry. Unfortunately thetimelines of construction of the chapel preceded the founding of our lodges byseveral hundred years either making this an unusual coincidence or acontroversial suggestion that the origins of masonry have some mysteriousconnection to the Sinclairs and their medieval links.
Ironically, most Masonic historians concede that the reference to corn in ourceremonies is a modern day adaption of other food staples. Corn in the yellowand highly hybrid version we would recognize today was not widely cultivatedin the areas of Israel during biblical times and the use of the word in the Bibleprobably referred to the common wheat and barley grains that were grown then. When the builders were paid their wages in corn, wine and oil, they most likelyreceived wheat or barley instead.
Masonry being a speculative discipline still attaches great importance to thesymbol of corn. Masons who practice our craft can receive a wage just as ourancient brethren did but it comes from the labors of Freemasonry which includecharity, uprightness of conduct and brotherly love.
It has been said that: “The Mason who works for the joy of working, doeshis part in the lodge work, takes his place among the laborers of Freemasonry,

he will receive corn, wine and oil in measures pressed down and running overand know a fraternal joy as substantial in fact as it is ethereal in quality: as realin his heart as it is intangible to the profane world”.
The mysterious ear of corn on the wall of a 13th century Scottish chapel has manyinterpretations. It may have been gleaned from the knowledge of returningCrusaders, actually prove a link to an epic but unrecorded sea voyage, or pointto a little known link between Rosslyn and Masonry. The truth is perhaps lost inthe mists of time, but the importance of Masonic Corn is still as relevant todayas it was at our founding.
