Ketchup on SomeFrench Fry History

“Do you want fries withthat?” It’s a question thatmany folks answer with anenthusiastic “Yes!”

Despite their name, it’sdifficult to determine the exactorigin of french fries. Potatoes, native to South America, arrivedin Europe in the mid-1500s, andSpain, France and Belgium allclaim to be the place where thevegetable was first served cut upand fried in oil.

U.S. President ThomasJefferson, who spent time inFrance as an ambassador, iscredited with introducing frenchfries to America when herequested that a White Housedinner in 1802 include“potatoes served in the Frenchmanner.” By that time, streetcarts selling deep-fried foodswere common in France, andchefs there had also popularizedthe julienne technique, thecutting of food into long, thinstrips. Both of these preparationmethods likely led to the namefrench fried potatoes, which waseventually shortened to fries.

As a side dish or snack, hotand crispy fries are now offeredin a variety of options, includingcrinkle-cut, shoestring, waffle, curly and steak fries.
