COLLEGE EVENTS

SAINT TOO CANAAN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

The College is looking forward to welcoming a group of 13 students and two staff from Saint Too Canaan Christian School next Wednesday. Over the past seven years, the College and Saint Too Canaan, situated in Hong Kong, have developed a strong sister school relationship based on a common Christian outreach mission. Our visitors are looking forward to seeing the sights of Sydney and to spending time with their new ‘families’, who have opened their homes to billet them.

I would like to thank the families who have generously agreed to billet our guests – I know the students from both schools are looking forward to the opportunity to meet and learn about the lives of their new ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’.

LONE PINE CEREMONY

Next Tuesday, representatives from Campbelltown RSL will be visiting the College to unveil a plaque which commemorates the service of the men and women in the armed services. Mr Peter Smith (previously - Australian Navy), will unveil the plaque near the pine trees in the Junior School. These trees are descendants of the lone pine that stands at Gallipoli.

The date of this event has special significance and marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Lone Pine, which was fought between Australian and Turkish troops as part of the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.

Further details of this unveiling will be given in next week’s College Newsletter

INTRODUCING THE 2013 – 2014 COLLEGE CAPTAINS

The College continues to be blessed with the quality of our student leaders. Sam Staples and Caitlin Rudder, our 2012-2013 College Captains, did an outstanding job representing the students, staff and College community in many presentations and events. I am confident that John Brackenbury and Danielle Hamilton, our 2103 – 2014 College Captains, will continue our fine tradition of having outstanding student leaders who are excellent representatives and role models to all students in our school.

DANIELLE HAMILTON

Hi, I’m Danielle and I went to St Peter’s Anglican Primary School and then moved to Broughton for the beginning of high school. I currently attend St Peter’s Anglican Church and have done so for the past 10 years with my mum, dad and younger brother, Scott. It is an absolute blessing and honour to be elected as the 2013-2014 female Captain of our school. Both John and I are really looking forward to representing our College in a way that reflects our school’s mantra, ‘Life through Christ’. As a prefect team, we are all really excited to see how we can

BROUGHTONNewsletter- 3

influence the College in the most positive way possible and bring much glory to God. Whilst at Broughton, I have really enjoyed the opportunity of extra-curricular activities that involve my love for music and glorifying God. I am excited about the upcoming year and look forward to enjoying the great opportunities that Broughton has to offer and the challenges God has in store for me and for the rest of the leadership team.

JOHN BRACKENBURY

My name is John Brackenbury, and it’s an honour to introduce myself as male College Captain for 2013-14. Having attended Broughton since the commencement of Year 7, I have come to love the school around me in all its aspects, not least its teachers, students, parents and community. I can say with certainty that the atmosphere of Broughton has helped to foster my growth as a Christian these past 4 years, and it is a great encouragement to see younger students continue to be nurtured in this way and develop a love for Christ while at school, through the positive influences of Christian Studies, Chapel, RAGE and Bible Studies.

Since my early childhood, I have attended St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Camden, and have more recently enjoyed the privilege of teaching younger children in the church, both in Sunday School and presenting the Kid’s Talk prior to the children’s departure.

In my spare time, I busy myself with music, playing both the piano and the clarinet. Besides this, I also recreationally enjoy mathematics and the simple pleasure of baking cakes, biscuits and the like.

While serving Broughton, it is my hope and prayer that Danielle and I, in addition to the rest of the prefect team, act as good ambassadors for the school, but above all, as good ambassadors for Christ, for in all things it is Him that we aim to serve.

JUNIOR SCHOOL MRS C HALLORAN- HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

The teachers and I were very impressed with the behavior of the students during our Canberra excursion last Friday. They were respectful in the various venues and asked some very interesting questions. The highlight for me was our visit to the Governor General’s Residence. We had a tour of the house and grounds and enjoyed meeting staff and finding out more about the role of the Governor General. She has around 1000 functions each year!

Next week, we have two very big and exciting events. On Tuesday our Primary Choir, Band and Percussion group will have the opportunity to perform at the Sydney Town Hall. This is an amazing experience and we know that they will all represent our College

well. It will be a very long day, as we will need to attend the rehearsals during the day before the evening performance. Mrs Bartlett has planned some other activities for us such as visiting State Parliament and dinner at McDonalds. I thank all of the teachers and the students for their efforts in preparing for this event.

Our other big event is of course the Athletics Carnival. This will be our first one at the Campbelltown Stadium and we are looking forward to using these wonderful facilities. Please read below for details regarding the carnival that involves all students from grades 2-6. A huge thanks to Miss Taylor for her extraordinary efforts in coordinating this day.

STAGE THREE & STAGE TWO PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

On Thursday 15 August the Stage Three students (Years 5 and 6) and Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) are invited to attend, with their parents, an “Amazing Me” course looking at “Bodies and Babies” (6.00pm – 7.00pm) and “Puberty” (7.15pm – 8.15pm) in the College Function Centre. The Permission note for this evening presentation has been sent home with the students this week. Parents are invited to attend with their children. The cost is $15 per family attending one session or $20 per family for 2 sessions.

This is a wonderful opportunity to have the “Facts of Life” explained in a Christian context and has had vey positive feedback from parents and students in the past.

Amazing Me is a Christian organisation. More information relating to the program can be found at

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday, 8 August at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium, Leumeah. The carnival will commence at 9.00 am but teacher supervision will be available from 8.30 am.

If you haven’t indicated on the permission note that you require bus transport you must take your son/daughter directly to and from the stadium.

The canteen facilities will be available to students during designated break periods throughout the day. However, we encourage them to also bring food from home.

Children will sit in House Groups when not competing. Announcements will be made throughout the day calling students to the marshaling area for running races and to various field events. Programs will also be available. Students will need to listen to announcements. Races will not be rerun if a child misses an event.

Parents of Year 2 Children

Children in Year 2, who are 8 years old this year, will be able to compete in all events. Children who are 7 years old this year will also attend the carnival, although parents need to be aware that NASSA level is only for 8 years and above, so participation at our carnival is for fun. They will have running races at the commencement of the day and will then complete some fun activities with their teachers. They will also spend time in the grandstand cheering on their Houses.

SPORT

This week the IPSSO teams competed against Macarthur Anglican. Below is a summary from each of the coaches.

Junior Mixed AFL Miss A McCann

Lost 46-6. Girls played well, such an improvement from last week throwing and kicking the ball.

Junior Modified Volleyball Miss van Breda

Lost 2-0. The team played a sound game. A great improvement from all players. Player of the match goes to Sophie Giannetta, for her willingness to participate and strategic thinking. Well done everyone!

Junior Girls Netball Miss Blake

Won 11-3. The girls have improved since last game against Macarthur! Congratulations to Charlotte Dell and Ashley Mead for a great game.

Junior Boys Soccer Mrs Rixon

Draw 1-1. The boys played a very exciting game against Macarthur which resulted in a draw. Well done boys!

Senior Girls Netball Miss Taylor

Win 31-4. Well done to my amazing Netball team! You all demonstrated excellent skills and communication across the court. Special mention to Sofija Ocokoljic for some very confident shooting!

Senior Modified Volleyball Miss Winkler

Senior AFL Miss Koeller

Senior Soccer Mrs Gajda

Won 2-1. Amazing team cooperation and communication. Andrew Griffiths saved two goals. Goals were from Sheridan and Ryan. Man of the match goes to Jerome Eid and Connor Kalpou.

STAGE 3 TO CANBERRA

Below are some excerpts from students regarding their excursion to Canberra on Friday 26 July.

“My favourite venue was Parliament House. Some highlights are seeing the House of Representatives and the Senate. I learnt that making laws isn’t easy. In the House of

BROUGHTONNewsletter- 6

Representatives, everything was green, however in the Senate everything was in scarlet red.”

By Olivia Dell

“Our next stop was the War Memorial where we saw a lot of vehicles that were used in the wars. We watched a little slide show which said you could fake your age and this one boy who was 14 went to war and sadly died.”

By Natalie Neale

“Then we saw a gate which was like a boarder security in Mexico, that’s how heavily armed it was but then the time came that we could eat. Everyone clutched their food like there was no tomorrow and chugged it down like savages within minutes. After our break we went inside a place which most people would call a dream home. It had tennis courts, and it belonged to the handpicked Governor Generals’ home. Surprisingly it wasn’t a modern top notch home, the style was really old but it looked really good just to look at. Next we saw many medals of bravery and appreciation while the Governor Generals’ personal soldier at arms told us about many, including the Victorian Cross which is the highest bravery medal.”

SENIOR SCHOOL MRS C KENNEDY HEAD OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL

Thanks to the many parents and students who attended the Study Skills interactive workshop. I have included a short article below. Year 11 will be involved in some study skills workshops in Week 1 of Term 4 as they begin their HSC.

Next Wednesday we will welcome thirteen students and two teachers from our sister school, St Too Canaan Christian College in Hong Kong. Thank you to the families who have opened up their homes for the week. Our visitors will accompany their host student to each of their classes and have been encouraged by their teachers to speak English as much as possible. I ask the Senior School to make them welcome, take up opportunities to converse with them, get to know them and their culture and assist in making their time here a most memorable one.

On Wednesday evening almost 50 students and their parents attended a meeting at the College for Year 10-12 (2014) students who have shown interest in the cultural trip to China with a 2 day visit to Hong Kong which includes a day visit to St Too Canaan. A reminder, that the application and deposit needs to be received at the College by Wednesday 14 August.

At today’s school assembly I was able to award certificates to a large number of students who had achieved 100% attendance during Semester 1. Congratulations to those students as they were well-deserved. Also congratulations to Elizabeth Arundel and Lachlan Veld for being crowned Masterchef winners in last week’s fundraiser. Thank you to the teachers and students who were involved in organising the event and to Lachlan for writing the article below.

STUDY SKILLS INTERACTIVE PARENT/STUDENT WORKSHOP

On Monday 29 July the Senior School held an interactive study skills workshop for students in Years 8, 9 and 10. Around 150 people were present. The last occasion that this event was run was in 2006, and like then, the night proved to be an outstanding and informative evening. It was very encouraging to hear the dynamic conversations being held with parents and their child talking about study. The program was presented by Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services and who has been presenting to our Year 11 students for ten years. Prue gave some very practical advice about how to study, how to get the best out of your notes, how to manage your study time, how to use your Student Handbooks and assessments. I have quoted some of the feedback from our parents and students in attendance on the night.

“Giving us tips on how to study and then the follow up. What parents need to do to help children to study was excellent”.

“As a parent I liked everything. How we as parents can be involved, showing how easy it can be to get into good habits”

“Range of options covering different ways we can study. Not one size fits all!”

“Great ideas, study notes, really interactive, informative and fun”.

Thank you to the parents and students for your attendance on the night, and for your feedback.

EFFECTIVE INTERNET RESEARCH

Do you waste hours on the Internet when you are researching for an assignment? Here are our top 10 tips to be more effective and efficient in your research.

1. REQUIREMENTS: Before you start, review all the info about the assignment carefully. What have you been asked to do? What are the main points or requirements? What guidelines or directions have you been given? Do you understand the task? Is there anything you need to ask your teacher about? Spend around 10 minutes on this. Highlight key words, try and paraphrase in your own words.

2. BRAINSTORM: You need to decide what you are going to research. Spend around 20 minutes on your initial brainstorm. Write a list of the different areas you will need to include in your assignment. For each section brainstorm topics or phrases that might help you narrow your research. Pay particular attention to any marking criteria you have been given. If you know absolutely nothing about the topic, you may like to spend 5-10 minutes in Wikipedia to give yourself a bit of background and overview. While many schools do not want you to use Wikipedia as a reference in your assignment (as it is not always a reliable or expert source to quote from) it is a good way to get an overview about the main points and to generate some thoughts on what you may need to research.

3. PLAN: You need to work out how much info you will need for each section of your assignment. There is no point collecting pages of information on a point if you only need to write a paragraph. Look at the word or page limit for the assignment. This may vary depending on the format of the task. For each section, work out roughly how much information you will need for that section and write this down on your brainstorm list. This should only take 10

BROUGHTONNewsletter- 9

minutes. You may also want to write your list of what you need to research, the key words or phrases and amount of info needed out again neatly so you can have it by you when you start your research on the computer.

4. FEEDBACK: Show someone your initial plan before you start researching. A parent, a sibling, your teacher – just get someone to have a quick look to make sure you haven’t missed anything obvious or misinterpreted the assignment. They may also suggest other lines of enquiry for you to explore.

5. BROADEN SEARCH: Don’t forget that there are other places to research apart from the internet! libraries, books, magazines and newspapers. Your librarian might also know about certain databases you could access. You may know people who are experts on the topic. Don’t always go straight to Google.

6. INTERNET SEARCHES: Many students waste a lot of time as they do not know what they are looking for! Well you have a plan, so you will start with the first item on your brainstormed list. Remember to put “exact phrases” in quotation marks. Try other search engines apart from Google as they may show different results.

7. BE SELECTIVE: When the search results appear on your screen, do not just click on the first link. Take a few moments to look at where the links are from (eg. National Geographic? A blog?). Think about which ones seem more likely to a) answer your assignment question and b) be from a reputable source (such as an expert or authority). Read the few lines of information underneath each link. Many students waste a lot of time as they just click at random. Make an assessment before clicking. You may also look at more than just the first page of results. Also assess your search terms. Did the search engine find the sorts of things you were looking for or should you modify your search terms before clicking on a link?

8. ASSESSING INFORMATION: When you find information that looks useful, you need to decide if the source is reputable. Who is the author and what are their credentials? What sort of organisation has created the site? Can you tell anything from the URL of the site? When was the site last updated? Who is the target audience of the site? Where has the information come from? These are just some of the questions you need to ask yourself when you are critically evaluating a website.

9. RECORDING INFORMATION: If you find information that is useful, you need to record this information. You have two main options. You could print out the information so you can highlight it. Or you can cut and paste the relevant information into a word document or a program or app like Onenote or Evernote. If you take the second option, make sure you collate the information under your list of headings that you created when brainstorming.

10. RECORDING REFERENCES: If you print the information, make sure the following is on the page and if not then write onto the page: the title of the source, the author, the publisher, and place and date of publication. This is your preliminary, or draft, bibliography. If you are cutting and pasting into a program, make sure you also have this info and it is linked to the correct content! You will need this for your bibliography and to ensure that you do not plagiarise when you start writing your assignment.

MASTERCHEF DAY 2013

On the 23 and 24 July, twenty seven Masterchefs from all years competed for a spot in the finals, which was being held on Friday 26. All the competitors put out amazing dishes and made the days a massive success. After Wednesday’s competition the 4 finalists had been decided. They were Elizabeth Arundell, Isaac Broome, Isabella Wigan and Lachlan Veld.

If any of the contestants had half as much fun as I did cooking and presenting our dishes to the judges then they would have had an absolutely great time.

I have some very distinct memories through this event, including on the Thursday night before Finals making my Cheesecake and ruining the batch by pouring solid gelatin into the cheesecake mixture which in turn meant I needed to go and get more cream cheese.

On behalf of all the contestants I would like to personally thank all the teachers who helped create Master Chef Day, especially Mrs Russell and Miss O’Brien whom announced to me I was going to be cooking in the finale.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to this week’s winner of Writer of the Week Adam Ursino of Year 12. He takes us on an intellectual exploration of the HSC area of study Belonging.

“Belonging is inherently connected with individuals making choices as to how to integrate themselves within groups. This is necessitated by the varied manner in which different forms of Belonging may manifest themselves. Likewise, circumstances that the individual cannot control may supersede decision making and remove the possibility of active agency.”
