Students Receive Award from Michigan Schools and Credit Union

FHS sophomore students, Destiny Hawshaw and My Tran presented a student credit card marketing campaign to the Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union. As part of this presentation the students developed a one minute video commercial, a radio announcement, an image for Facebook, a brochure, informational postcard and discussed breakeven points and return on investment for their marketing campaign. We are proud to announce that the students placed second in

the competition. This is the first time Fitzgerald has sent a team to compete in this competition. Representatives of the Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union presented the students with an award at a Board Meeting on May 28.

Parents and members of the community will be able to access the district and schools’ 2014 - 2015 Annual Education Reports (AERs) from the district website containing assessment and accountability data as soon as the Michigan Department of Education receives notification/approval from the U.S. Department of Education regarding their request for an ESEA Flexibility Waiver Renewal. Staff and Students Promote Spartan Pride

FHS Football Coach, Gary Skop and players run 2-3 miles through Fitzgerald neighborhoods to promote Spartan Pride and excitement for the upcoming season. This is the second year for this event that was started last summer by Coach Juwan Shakespear. “The players really enjoy talking to people in the community as we take our tour,” explains Coach Skop.

A second community run will be scheduled for mid-July. Watch for the Spartan flags as the athletes run through the streets of Fitzgerald.

Football Coach Receives AwardEarlier this year, Mr. Gary Skop received the Marine Corp

Semper Fi Football Coaching Award for East Michigan. The award is given by the U.S. Marines Corps and Glazier Football Clinics to honor high school football coaches who display faithfulness to the mission of their team and exemplify the Marine standard of excellence in developing leaders. It recognizes a high school football coach who lives out the Marine Corps motto: Semper Fidelis (“Always Faithful”), and who models the Marine Corps leadership values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. FREE PRESCHOOL FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS!

From the desk of the Mayor of the City of Warren, Mayor James R. Fouts

On August 11, 2014, over 5 inches of rain in a 5-hour period fell on our city – the normal rain is 1½ inches.

And 2.1 billion gallons of sewage from Oakland County rushed through our city.

As a result, a large number of city streets and basements flooded.

Our city employees including police and firefighters worked 24-7 to help residents through this crisis – but it was too overwhelming. That’s when the Southern Baptist Convention volunteers arrived to help, recruited by Councilwomen Kelly Colegio, who also handed out emergency flood kits to flood victims.

The Southern Baptist Convention volunteers did everything to help our residents clean and clear their basements. They helped wherever they could.

This summer, we welcome the volunteers again as they have made arrangements to be housed at the Schofield Elementary School. They will help our residents whose basements were flooded in any way they can.

Thanks to the Fitzgerald Schools Board of Education and the schools’ administration, led by Superintendent Barbara VanSweden, our city parks and recreation Director Henry Bowman and Councilwoman Colegio for their help in this effort.

The Southern Baptist Convention volunteers deserve our city’s appreciation for their outstanding help during a very difficult time in our city’s history.

Message from the Superintendent Continued Continued from page 1 This Class of 2015 overcame the challenges in their lives to earn a diploma. They have fought hard and were determined to graduate in 2015. The students in this class are enrolling in college or trade school to continue their education, while others are entering the military or the job market.

As a district, we should be very proud of the success of our 2015 graduates. Earning a high school diploma has taken on new meaning these days as the competition for jobs increases in this global economy. Workers with a high school diploma will outearn those who do not graduate by more than half a million dollars, and college graduates will outearn high school graduates by more than a million dollars! It is essential that as educators, parents and as a community, we continue with the expectation that all students will earn their high school diploma in four years. It is also critical that during those years of education, we equip them with the skills and knowledge to compete for college entrance and/or for the workforce.

As we conclude this school year, we want to express appreciation for the great partnership the district has with the Fitzgerald community. The successes of our graduates could not happen without the ongoing support as a community.

Congratulations to our 2015 graduates of Fitzgerald Public Schools! We look forward to hearing from these young people as they continue to achieve success!
