Message from the PresidentBy Bob MacDonald

Our young Chapter capped its first year with a Christmas

    party on December 6th at Lovezzola's. I won't attempt

to improve on our outgoing Secretary Ed Wischmeyer's

account of the proceedings, appearing elsewhere in this

newsletter. (Well ok, maybe I did stick my oar in just a

bit.) By all accounts everybody had a good time.

The January 3rd meeting would be a good time for

everyone to pay his 2012 dues if he hasn't already so.

Everyone except Med Ragheb, that is, who was awarded

a Complimentary Membership in November in appreciation

of his program on the Nanchang CJ-6.

The January program will be presented by member Ed

Wischmeyer on the subject of the Air Cam.

If I may get up on my soapbox for a moment, I would like

to talk about one pillar of our EAA community - the

willingness of each member to help another with his

project or in any other way that is needed.

Will volunteered to go get Steve's newly-purchased

Aeronca Chief located several states to the west of here.

Several members made the effort to attend Steve's open

house in October at Midway. I myself have been the

recipient of help as Steve and Avril lent me headsets to

troubleshoot my COM problem, and Swaid recently lent

me his BNC crimping tool. There have been many other

instances of assistance this past year, rendered by

members without fanfare and without payment. That's

the way it's supposed to be.

I'm sure that this will continue in 2012. Anybody who

undertakes to build an airplane - or who contemplates

such a project - soon learns that she needs all the help

that she can get. We have several projects in the Chapter

that range from being no more that a gleam in the

member's eye all the way to "90% done with 90% left".

I encourage these members to keep us all abreast of your

project and to not be shy about letting us participate.

And it is apparent to me that donors gain just as much as

    the recipients in these exchanges.

See you all on the 3rd!

EAA Chapter 1514 meets the first Tuesday of everymonth at 6:30 PM at Lovezzola’s Pizza, (328 USHighway 80, Pooler. 912 748-6414) or at an offsitelocation as dictated by that month's program.Location of the next meeting is given in this newsletter.

Dinner begins at 6 PM with the meeting following.

Our next meeting is on: January 03, 2012

    Guests are always welcome.

The deadline for the February 07, 20112 newsletteris: Close of business, January 30th, 2012.

    Brainstorm the tail-boom structure.

    In attendance:

Bob MacDonald, Doug McKissack, Raj Narisetti, Varun Nare,Sharath Gudla, Ed Wischmeyer, Swaid Rahn, Willard White.Paul Rothweiler

    What we accomplished:

Paul brought in full scale plans for a WAR BF109 replica andwe discussed changes. Paul, our meetings are somewhatchaotic but I hope the feedback was helpful. We appreciateyour participation and hope you'll join us again.

We addressed our ten point plan to complete the wingstructure. Bob will work on section 5 for our next meeting. Thanks, Bob, I know that will take some time.

We considered tail shape (we have previously agreed on aCht of .6 and a Cvt of .04). The consensus was for anaft-slanted tail with a small fairing on the bottom of therudder to continue the lines of the tail boom (See updatedJET specs attachment). The horizontal tail has been movedforward and raised; consequently the Ht size will beincreased slightly by the tail sizing formula.

The group developed no enthusiasm for using an invertedairfoil for the horizontal tail.

We agreed to move the cg range aft 1.65 inches. The rangeis now fs100.0 to 103.3 (.25 mac to .35 mac).

The canopy pivot discussion was quite lively, with all kindsof alternatives considered. The group finally arrived atpivoting the canopy at the front with two hinge pins, whichwere attached to a cable which could be pulled in anemergency to ditch the canopy. The meeting terminated(fell apart) when a Diamond DA-42 arrived on the ramp with,(fortunately) a forward pivoting canopy.

We didn't really begin to address the tail-boom structure, that will be on our agenda for our next meeting which willbe 10 Jan.

    What's next:

Bob will show us how to calculate compression loads on thetop cap at BL21 and Varun will bring in some updated andmore detailed drawings. Varun, the attached drawings areno longer to scale, you'll have to get the dimensions fromthe text. We've agreed on the number of ribs, but theirspacing is arbitrary at the moment, you can put them wherethey make sense.

acclamation amid threats of new blood being drafted next

    year.

Next month's program will feature speaker Ed Wischmeyer,

who will give the low down on flying the AirCam for more

than 100 hours at less than 1,000 feet.

Corrections and Additions by Bob MacDonald

1 I don't know who this President for Life McDonald guy is,

    but I believe I know a President-For-One-Year (PFOY)

    MacDonald.

2 PFOY also observes that there were 21 in attendance, not

12 as hinted at in the minutes. This number is substantiated

by the fact that 21 numbers were drawn by gift exchange

participants with no gifts or ungifted attendees left over.

The confusion may stem from the gift exchange Master of

Ceremonies/Outgoing Secretary's not being able to read his

own handwriting. Okay, so 12 upside down can look like 21

and vice versa, especially after the third trip to the bar*.

3 First-time guests were Hollie Riedman, friend of Allen

Jackson, Diane White, Will's wife, and Debbie Aylmer, who

owns three airplanes, and who was accompanied by her

personal pilot and her mechanic. We were also glad to see

Pat Hobson, wife of Bill, and Gerry and Jane Zimmerman.

4 PFOY requests that the minutes be amended to call out

the "usual suspects" by name for the record. They are Bob

MacDonald, President, Swaid Rahn, VP, Jack Scott,

Treasurer (all repeat offenders), and Keith Gay, Secretary

(who can probably get the conviction removed from his

permanent record in a year if he has a good attorney).

Correction to the above by Ed Wischmeyer

*I only made one trip to the, er, salad bar.

    EAA Chapter 1514, Meeting

    Minutes:

    December 6, 2011

    Submitted by Ed Wischmeyer

President for Life Bob McDonald1 did not formally call the

meeting to order, and disorder prevailed as a hungry lot was

forced to sit at their tables awaiting the magic hour for the

pizza to be served. However, a scant dozen2 early arrivers

received EAA mugs from the overflow of the outgoing

secretary's collection but alas, said mugs as delivered were

devoid of liquid Yule cheer. There followed a lively and

discordant discussion of rules for the evening's gift exchange,

and a discussion of a new member contest, till somebody

announced that the bar was open. Showing true leadership,

President for Life Bob McDonald was the first one to receive

his due from the bar. However, ahem, the bar that was open

    was the salad bar. Oh...

After a wonderful gorging on pizza by the memberships and

several guests, most of whom wisely remained incognito3,

the gift exchange began. Senior Member and Officer of the

Deck Swaid Rahn won a set of three OriginalFuzz Pads till

some dirty dog swiped them from him, ostensibly for his

children. Although the outgoing secretary did his best to

enthuse the attendees, there was extremely little gift

swiping, an anomaly that, if reported, could endanger the

young chapter's charter. President for Life Bob McDonald

did bring a half dozen paper airplane models of his S-22,

and those models were gratefully received by a

    corresponding number of attendees.

Somewhere along the line, there was in fact a business

meeting. The usual suspects4, more or less, were elected by
