We are happy to introduce the Pony Express, the new monthly newsletter of the Sunny Hills PTA. The Pony Express will serve as a record of the school year, with reports and photos from events and programs, recaps of meetings, committee reports, recognition of volunteers, and a message from the PTA president. We will continue to provide information about upcoming events and deadlines through the Mustang Messenger (weekly eNews), which is sent by the school.

The Pony Express will be published monthly to the PTA website, with email notification being sent to all PTA website subscribers. You will be able to access past issues on the PTA website, as well as find information about submission deadlines and publication calendar.

PTA Membership is 59% Strong Did you know that last year, out of 900 PTAs in Washington state, Sunny Hills PTA was one of only 19 schools with 100% PTA membership? Let's maintain that distinctive honor this year by continuing to have every Sunny Hills student represented by a PTA member. Every membership helps us to achieve that goal. As of September 24, 59% of our students are covered by a PTA member. If you haven't already enrolled for a 2012-2013 PTA Family Membership, there are 2 ways to join. Please either register and pay online, or print the paper enrollment form and send in your completed form with a check. Forms can also be found in the Sunny Hills office.

Thank you for supporting the students, staff and community of Sunny Hills Elementary School!

What's been happening?

Big thanks go out to all of the new kindergarten families that participated in our summer KinderConnect events. We held four events over the summer so that incoming kindergartners and their families could meet new friends in an effort to help make starting their school careers at Sunny Hills a positive experience from Day 1. We had more than 20 families at each event. It was great to make so many new friends before school even started!

Welcome, Sunny Hills kindergartners!

Amy Owens and Tracy Drake, KinderConnect co-chairs

News Flash! Two of our very own Sunny Hills fourth-grade teachers, Patricia Foryan and Derona Burkholder, walked the runway in the Issaquah Schools Foundation’s First Annual Fall into Fashion fundraiser August 24 at Swedish Hospital in Issaquah. Patricia and Derona donned fashions from local stores in the community, including Daisy, Suburban Soul, and Swedish Hospital’s Be Well fitness boutique.

Bruce Pflaumer, a professional stylist and image consultant at Pstyle Image Consulting, carefully selected looks in three categories for each of the models.

Guests paid to attend this event and were treated to a fabulous homemade dinner, along with the show. All the ticket proceeds went directly to the Issaquah Schools Foundation.

The models in the show were teachers and/or moms in the Issaquah School District. Grace H, a Pacific Cascade Middle School student and Sunny Hills alum, was an assistant stylist for the show, as was Michelle Anderson, a Sunny Hills mom.

The Fall into Fashion committee consisted of Issaquah School District moms, including Danielle Miller, Lisa Foley, and Jenell Tamaela from Sunny Hills. The event raised more than $3,000 for ISF.

What's been happening?

On August 27, PTA volunteers helped provide tours of the school to new incoming Sunny Hills families. Thanks to tour guides Jamie Menold, Amy Gathright, Lisa Small, Tracy Drake, Lori Riskin, Monica Rockwell, Heather Duenaz, Kym Clayton, Jenell Tamaela, Laura Yamashita, and Shannon Holliway for your help!

School Tours In response to your feedback (and with support from the school), we changed our school supply pre-order program this year to have supplies delivered to the school. This meant that prices were about $15 lower than in previous years, and many more of you chose to take advantage of this program! Thanks to Jenell Tamaela, Sally Porter, Alison Tobey, and Karin Danner. Thanks also to our kid helpers, including Keelin D, Rowan D, Shea D, Taylor T, Macy T, Jack P, Charlie P, Kristina W, and Riley R.

Meet the Teacher Day On August 31, students came to school to meet their teachers and bring in their school supplies. To help kick off the new school year, the PTA sponsored “Back-to-School Donuts” in the courtyard. Sunny Hills alums and PTA members helped serve donuts to students and their families. A huge thank you to the Pine Lake QFC for its generous donation of 600 donuts for this event!

Students and parents also had an opportunity to check out this year’s selection of Mustang Spirit Wear, take a look at photos from PTA-sponsored events from years past, and learn about this year’s upcoming events (and volunteer opportunities).

Thanks to all who participated, and helped with, this year’s back-to-school event!

Boxes to Go! The Staff Appreciation Committee started the school year with a box lunch spread for the staff on Meet the Teacher day.

The staff loaded their boxes with club or deli sandwiches, Tim's chips, an apple or a banana, and a wrapped cookie so they could head back to their class to prepare for the first day of school! The tables were decorated with Sunny Hills colors and water bottles that read, “The first day of school is near, so here's a snack to stay in gear. Welcome Back! Your Sunny Hills PTA.”

Special thanks to the Sunny Hills PTA for providing supplies, to QFC for donating the boxes, to Fred Meyer for discounting the sandwiches, and to Sunny Hills parent Stacy Heller for donating the cookie sleeves.

Hooray for the first day of kindergarten! On September 5, a crowd of 48 kindergarten parents gathered in the Sunny Hills MPR for the PTA’s annual Tears & Cheers event. Approximately half of those parents represent families that are new to Sunny Hills.

Principal Sarah White welcomed parents, told them a little bit about the Sunny Hills community, and reiterated how excited Sunny Hills is to have their kiddos at school.

Tears & Cheers PTA President Danielle Miller explained what the PTA does and detailed some of the reasons families might want to join the PTA.

Attendees enjoyed light refreshments and had an opportunity to meet and mingle with kindergarten families and other parents. We’ll never tell who cheered and who needed a tissue …

10/26: Reflections submissions due Calling all students! Here is a chance to let your creativity shine. Each year, the Reflections Program challenges

students to create art that supports a specific theme. The theme for the 2012-2013 school year is "The Magic of a Moment." Entries are due in the office before 3:30 pm on Friday, October 26.

Students are allowed to enter up to three submissions for consideration at Sunny Hills, in any combination of the six art categories: dance/choreography, film/video, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts (art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage). Original works of art, tailored to the theme, are considered for moving on to the Council/State/National levels.

Students at Sunny Hills are entered in one of the following categories: Primary (preschool to 2nd grade), Intermediate (3rd to 5th grade), or Special Artist (students who submit under and meet ADA guidelines).

All Reflections submissions will be displayed during the spring Art Fair and will be featured in the yearbook.

Complete rules & guidelines for each category, along with entry forms can be found on the Sunny Hills Reflections page and the Washington State PTA website. Paper copies are available in the Sunny Hills office.

What else is going on?

Psssssttt … Here's a little-known secret: if you are looking for a fun way to contribute to your student's classroom, being an Art Docent is one of the best volunteer opportunities around! You get to teach fun and exciting art lessons and engage students in a new way each time. Have little or no experience with art? Not to worry, we have many lessons and supplies. All you need is an enthusiasm to teach and a willingness to sometimes get a little messy with your students.

There are MANY WAYS to help fund PTA-sponsored programs and events through "silent" fundraising efforts - without ANY extra hassle for you! These are some of the EASIEST ways to support Sunny Hills PTA with much of the work done for us! Silent fundraisers are those in which we've partnered with another organization, and typically these fundraisers involve purchases you would already make each day and throughout the year. As a result, Sunny Hills receives a percentage of the sale, with the remainder going to the partner organization. You’ll find more information about all of these programs on the Silent Fundraising page on the website.

Several organizations offer rewards and incentives for various box tops and labels. There is always confusion about these programs - which products support which programs, which label/symbol/code needs to be submitted, etc. Here’s some information that might help you keep these programs straight:

Box Tops for Education (BTFE)

BTFE is a General Mills program. Every Box Top is worth 10 cents and has an expiration date. We receive cold, hard cash from this program - up to $20,000! There is also a Box Tops marketplace, which you can access through the Box Tops for Education website (www.btfe.com). This marketplace includes more than 200 online stores that give us up to 15 “eBoxTops” for every $10 you spend. You need to access these stores through the BTFE website in order for your purchases to be eligible for eBoxTops. The BTFE website also has printable coupons, and sometimes there are games/sweepstakes/surveys you can enter and earn eBoxTops. There is one going on now - check it out!

Rewardyourschool.com

The www.rewardyourschool.com site is for the Krogers chain (which includes QFC and Fred Meyer). Here you can

Silent Fundraising: Focus on Box Tops / Labels register your shopper card so that whenever you purchase eligible items, you can get a Catalina coupon for bonus Box Tops. You can get 5 eBoxTops (worth 50 cents) for our school just for registering on their site.

Growinglocallearning.com

The www.growinglocallearning.com site is for the Albertsons chain. You can get 5 eBoxTops (50 cents) for our school just for registering on their site also.

Labels for Education (LFE)

LFE is a Campbell’s Soup Company program. With this program, Instead of cash, we earn points - which are banked. There are more than 2,500 participating products—it’s not just soup labels! Turn in UPCs, barcodes, or caps for points—different products have different point values (1, 5, or 10 points). These do not have expiration dates.

When you clip Labels for Education, be sure to clip the entire UPC code!

LFE has a huge catalog of arts, athletics, and academics items that we are able to purchase using our points. LFE also has eLabels. And if you sign up your shopper cards on the LFE website (www.elabelsforeducation.com), every time you purchase a product, the school earns 1 point (1 eLabel) automatically. Then if you turn in the actual UPC, we get those points too -so the item you bought ends up being 2, 6, or 11 points.

Thanks for supporting these programs, which in turn help the PTA support our school!

What's happening around the district and the state?

TPep During the September 13 Issaquah PTSA Council general meeting , Issaquah School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steve Rasmussen discussed TPep, Teacher/Principal Evaluation Pilot Program. The idea behind this program is that “Every teacher should be in front of every child, everyday, in every classroom.” ISD’s 120 new teachers are taking part in the pilot, as well as other teachers who volunteered. Overall, 33% of ISD teachers will test out TPep this year. One big change with this new evaluation system is that every four years, all teachers will get a comprehensive evaluation, not just new teachers.

News from Issaquah PTSA Council Homework The district is reconsidering the homework policy this year at all levels of schooling and they want to hear from you. Is it too much? Please email or call any of your Issaquah School District School Board Representatives, give feedback at a school board meeting or attend other community meetings, and let them know your thoughts about homework.

New Teachers The district has hired 120 new teachers this school year. Sixty are new teachers, and the other sixty have moved here from out of town or out of state.

The vision of Washington State Par-ent Teacher Association (WPTSA) is to make every child's potential a reality. PTA works in classrooms and communities across the state, but we also advocate in Olympia for the well-being and education of all children.

Every fall, the association selects its legislative priorities, and hear-ing from you is a valuable step in the process. Please take a moment to fill out the survey and let your voice be heard.
