Newsletter 14, 6 September, 2019 Message from the Principal We welcomed the first day of spring this week with some long awaited sunshine. This week, I approved the Master Plan for SAEPS new building works commencing in December this year. After meeting with architects, Victorian Schools Building Authority (VSBA) and SESUM, we consulted with staff, parents and school council who have all endorsed the Master Plan as it utilizes space and opens up our school yard. The next stage of planning is the design stage where we will work with the VSBA and architects to design classrooms, offices etc. It is anticipated that building works will be completed by the end of 2020. Footy finals are amongst us and to celebrate our Australian tradition we are hosting a Football Day Lunch on Thursday 19 th September. Notices have been distributed to students to order a special lunch as well as come dressed in their favourite football team colours. It is also with great pleasure that I inform our community that we will have a number of our Deaf Students signing the Australian National Anthem at the AFL Grand Final. This will be such a great opportunity for our students and to promote our wonderful school. Can I thank Paula Grimmer our AUSLAN Interpreter who is preparing and working with our students. Be sure to watch our students perform on television on grand final day. Week of Wellbeing On Friday the 13 of September, we are celebrating Week of Wellbeing focusing on ‘Culture’; Who we are and Where we come from. Celebrating our cultural diversity and our identity as a school community. Grades will be mixed in P-2 and 3-6 groupings to participate in activities related to the top 10 cultures represented at our school. (Vietnam, Australia, Samoa, India, New Zealand, Philippines, Ethiopia, China, Pakistan and Sudan). Our school band will be performing at lunchtime and we invite our school community from 2:30pm to join in the activities with us. National eSmart Week This week, more than 1000 organisations from all around Australia are taking part in National eSmart Week. At St Albans East PS we aim to raise awareness about cyber safety and help educate and empower all students to be safe online. National eSmart Week is an initiative developed by the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, in partnership with Telstra Foundation. All students will have the opportunity to participate in activities selected by teachers to develop awareness and understanding of cyber bullying whilst being smart, safe and responsible online. I encourage parents to take the opportunity to discuss strategies or what they have learnt at school, during eSmart week. DISTRICT ATHLETICS CARNIVAL On Friday 23 August, 47 keen and aspiring athletes competed in the St Albans District Primary Schools Athletics Carnival held at the Keilor Athletics Track. They competed in a number of athletics events, including 100, 200 and 800 metres running, long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put and relay. We saw many fantastic performances from our students and they gained 11 first places, 13 second places and 14 third places out of a total 80 events. Not everyone was successful in their events but all the students were proud to represent our school, tried their best and enjoyed a wonderful day. At the end of the day when the points were tallied, SAEPS came first. A truly fantastic effort from everyone involved. All students who represented our school should be congratulated on their performance, as well as their excellent behaviour during the day. As a result of their performances at the District Carnival 12 students were selected to represent our district at the Keilor Division Primary Schools Athletics Carnival held last Tuesday 3 September. The level of competition was much higher than the Districts and Breeah, Christian, Alex, Mariah, Eishal, Chase, Mecon, Tamara, James, Jamie, Georgia and Farnia all performed well. Breeah, Tamara and James have been chosen to attend the next level of competition which is the Regionals to be held early next term. Cuppa and Cookie We would like to invite you to join us on Thursday 12th

Newsletter 14, 6 September, 2019

On Wednesday the 28th of August, our Grade 3-4 students attended the Australia 2050

Incursion. As part of their Inquiry unit of learning ‘My

Place in Australia and the World’ students participated in an incursion ‘Australia 2050’.

This learning experience gave the students opportunity to explore how the environment

supports the lives of people and other living things, and how we can use our environment to

ensure it is sustainable now and into the future.

Anna: How can we care for our environment? We can stop using cars and start riding bikes and walking more. We can also clean up the environment by putting our rubbish in the bin.

Vanhou: At our incursion we were taught about sustainability. To me, I think that animal habitats in our environment are important. Everything we make is from natural resources.

J.J: Well, what’s important to me in the future is to keep our planet healthy, clean and sustainable. We need to think about our use of plastic. Plastic is killing our animals in the ocean. We need to start reusing, reducing and recycling.

David: How can we care for our environment? We could pick up rubbish and put it in the right bin. Re-use plastic bottles for making rope. Buy electric cars instead of cars running on petrol.
