Message from the Principal Themes this fortnight have been Discipleship - “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 NIV The Lords supper - Communion “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death until he comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:26 NIV Recent tragedies in Bega Last weekend we all became aware of the unfolding tragedy of violence and loss here in the valley. With its saves and unrest comes hurt and fear for some. During the week we extended our thoughts and prayers to those who lost their loved ones so suddenly. Moreover we also thanked the many who were there to counsel, oper- ate, nurse and protect the community. So often we forget the impact on those who Reverend Captain Stuart Haynes said, “stand in the gap” between the good and evil in our daily lives. Counsellors, clergy, police, ambulance, surgeons, nurses and so many all play a part in keeping us safe and assured. Tending to the hurt, the lonely and fearful. As we saw in the fires in Tathra and in times when we feel most vulnerable, worried, we seek the strong and reliable. We remind you and these wonderful workers ‘in the gap’ between Good and evil, pain and loss of the Christian perspective... Joshua as he faced the unknown... “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV Year 10 testing Last week we enlisted the help of Allwells Academic Testing to come to SCAC and administer testing for our Year 10’s. We are so pleased to be able to share these with you. Teaching staff were most impressed at how quickly the results were delivered to us and also the amount of information which is now at our finger tips to assist the student and teachers in designing our programmes. These results are from testing by this independent company often used by larger schools and colleges to assess learning capacity and the stu- dents skills in the classroom. Of course it will form yet another part of our assessment procedure along with NAPLAN, class and subject assessments and testing. We intend to use all this information to determine more individualised aspects of teaching and learning along with assisting the Year 10’s, in particular, with their future directions in choice of subjects for Year 11, career choices and study patterns. In future months we intend to go through the same process with Year 4, 6 and 8, which are the alternate years to NAPLAN, which is currently under review. Some families applied officially for bursary and scholarship considera- tion. These applications will be considered in the near future by our selection committee. 2 Max Slater Drive, Bega 2550 PO Box 994 Bega 2550 Phone: 6494 7777 Email: [email protected] website: scac.nsw.edu.au JUNE 8, 2018

School photos This year we have changed the company who take our photos. From time to time this is necessary to make this valuable memento of your child’s school year to be at a competitive price range and also for the college and families to benefit from the offers made.We trust that as the photos return to us in the presentation folders that you will enjoy the product and it’s value.

Some (Paul our Groundsman pictured) had fun, while families enjoyed the group opportunity.

Thanks for your patience as we have explored this new company. Please note that now photos have been completed all future orders and transactions will occur online with the company.

Cross-country running representative season is underway and we have students representing SCAC and all independent schools in coming days.

Enrolments and “Top of the Valley”We have welcomed a significant number of students in recent weeks to the college with more coming soon.Over recent months SCAC has become the School of choice for many who come to the valley and also those seeking good value for the fees and what is on offer. So many prospective parents are amazed at the once only ‘hand in your pocket’ for fees with all compulsory excursion already considered and paid for each year. The flexible learning approach, the ever-widening subject and activity options available along with programmes in music, Duke of Edinburgh, equestrian and sports including our famous mountain bike club, have been attractions.

Academically SCAC has consistently out performed the others schools in the valley and given a wider range of opportunities to students with-in the college as they graduate to university and employment beyond school life. Our own Australian and international scientist home grown from SCAC through our wonderful programmes in STEM and agriculture and the Sapphire Foundation are the envy of many schools not just in the valley but beyond.

Now with our involvement in national education improvement in litera-cy and numeracy (LNAP) in infants and primary, supported by analysis for education potential in our new assessments along with help through learning support initiatives, strong pastoral care in a Christian environ-ment with small class sizes, we see that SCAC students have a good advantage.

We are proud of our college and its achievements and so must you be as parents and students. It is by word of mouth and the wonderful reputa-tion that we have become so popular as a quality education centre in recent times.

If you have friends or family considering SCAC tell them to call and visit . ‘Every day is an open day!’

Year 10 University of Wollongong Future DayAs part of our program to prepare our students for Senior School and beyond, Year 10 visited the University of Wollongong annex in Bega on Wednesday. Students selected a group of subjects in which they might be interested:STREAM 1: Health – Medicine & Nursing, Arts & Humanities and Education.STREAM 2: Engineering, Information Technology and Business & In-novation.Mrs Hoynes and Mr Clark report all students found the information interesting and worthwhile. Some students are now planning pathways to their future.I encourage parents to start a conversation with their Year 10 children that helps support their future options, come to the subject selection

information night on Tuesday 12 June and ensure they attend meetings with Careers Advisor Mrs Meers over the coming weeks and months.

Defence Force Recruitment Team visit Sapphire Coast Army and Navy servicemen cap-tured the attention of our students in a presentation that highlighted Australian Defence Force careers. With a close relationship with the ADF through the many family connections in the College, stu-dents listened intently to the vari-ety of opportunities offered from trades to university degree cours-es. Highlighted were careers with a strong Information Technology focus.https://www.defencejobs.gov.au/

New Look Winter Jackets Our new College winter jackets have arrived and have been extremely popular. This jacket is waterproof and warm and will be able to be worn over a school blazer and polar fleece jumper. This will ensure that our students are kept warm and dry. The Drizabone style is very much suited to our regional environment. The cost of the jacket will be $20 with a voucher collected from recep-tion. More jackets have been ordered and parents should ensure they receive this offer by collecting their coupon this term to avoid disap-pointment.This one off offer has been made available by the College Board. This will now be part of the College uniform. Other non-uniform jack-ets are not to be worn with the College uniform.

Girls Kezie Apps League Tag Gala Day Our Year 7 – 11 girls League Tag players had a fantastic day at the Bega Recreation Grounds. Teams from Eden, Bombala, Jindabyne, Bega and Lumen Christi combined for a colourful and exciting day of League Tag. Kezie Apps, Australian player, Dalley M awardee and now con-tracted to the St George/Illawarra Dragons and patron of this competi-tion encouraged players and refereed some games.

Our Year 7/8 Girls were successful winning one game against the Grand finalists of the day, a draw and two very close losses. All players con-tributed to the team’s success. Try scorers were EJ Norris, Katarina Saunoa, Zali Smith and Yasmin Welsford.Other schools in our district were unable to field year 11 and 12 teams, which meant that our senior girls played in the 9/10 competition. Both the 9/10 and 11/12 teams played with gusto scoring tries and displaying some excellent play throughout the whole day. I was very impressed with the ability and sportsman (woman)ship that all our students dem-onstrated throughout the whole day. Both teams had some narrow loss-es and on many occasions only going down by one try. Congratulations to all the students who participated. See you next year.

New students welcomedBy Ann SchwarzeWhat an exciting time in Prekinder welcoming new friends. Welcome to Alexandra and Koby who have both started Prekindergarten since the last newsletter. Alexandra and Koby have settled very quickly making friends and enjoying life at school. Congratulations to you both and also to our existing Prekinders who have been so friendly and kind.Another group of people who are very kind to Prekindergarten are the senior school students who are studying working with children with Ms Brown. We all look forward to Friday afternoons and the special activities organised by the teenagers. Last Friday they even had pizza making as an activity! I was away on that day but I heard all about it! Thanks so much to everyone involved and especially Ms Brown.Someone else we need to thank is Mrs Weber who brought the chickens to visit us. Prekinder really enjoyed seeing how much they’d grown and drew observational pictures too. Prekindergarten has continued to study the human body and have found out some very interesting facts about our hearts. Did you know that if you stretched out all of the veins, arteries and capillaries in your body, they would reach around the whole world twice? How amazing! We have listened to our hearts with our stethoscopes and felt our pulses or at least tried. God has made us in such a special way!

Tikko visits KindyBy Renee LightlyWhat a lovely drop of rain, and so very welcome. The wind and rain have kept us indoors for a few playtimes. These past 2 weeks we’ve been learning about our school environment and our routes to school. We’ve used maps and built models of our school using all our Leggo that was lovingly donated. Thank you everyone! You may have heard about our little friend Tikko who likes to take-away. We’ve been doing lots of subtraction with him. He has a few friends who will also visit us over the year. We’ve made repeating patterns, which you may have seen a video clip on Seesaw. We’ve also explored seasons, learnt about mi-

gration and hibernation. The children loved dramatising these. We’ve been training for our athletics carnival coming up in the last week of term, and in 2 weeks time we have our excursion to Candelo park, a permission note for this will come to you on Skoolbag in the next week or so. Thank you to our Mum’s who have come to help with literacy groups, we’ve started using our iPads, which of course the children are excited about. Please remember to keep on reading to your children. Books are available in our school library for parents to borrow also. Enjoy this beautiful long weekend.

Fishing with ScienceBy Yvonne Brown1/2B have been practising Athletics skills for the Athletics Carnival. 3/4W and Mrs Whyman have been participating in rotating group ac-tivities with us. Last Friday we combined with Kindergarten and Pre Kindergarten to show them how to stay in your lane in a race! We are working on a maths investigation called Gone Fishing. When we fish each day we have to check if our fish are the size we can keep or do we have to throw some back in. At the end of our fishing trip we have to share our catch with the other people in our group. In Science we are exploring the water cycle and how we can conserve water. We are conducting some experiments to study the properties of water. Please check that uniforms are labelled as jackets and jumpers are being handed in with no name so cannot be returned.Enjoy the long weekend and have a break from school routine.

News from 3/4WBy Lynda WhymanWe have our prac student Hana back in class with us for three weeks - how lucky are we! Hana will be observing, assisting and teaching some lessons in the next few weeks. We are best practicing our athletic skills getting ready for the carnival at the end of term. We also do fitness each morning. Thank you to Mrs Louie for showing us some skills.Unfortunately our excursion was postponed. We are hoping to now have it in Week 8, probably a Wednesday. We hope to investigate some old artefacts and the changes they have had over time.Thank you to all who are encouraging their child to read. Students love opportunities to read aloud and love hearing stories read to them. We have started sharing books and material that we read at home with the class...some great books out there!

Year 4/5 happeningsBy Myfanwy RussellHello there everyone! What an action packed 2 weeks we have had. We have had a lot of fun preparing for our Assembly this week. Some of the students had a chance to rewrite parts of the script which, allowed them to have even more of an input into the presentation. Its great to see 4/5R developing in their learning. We continue to have great learn-ing times in our Science pracs with Mr Pepper and working well in Spelling with our phonemes and graphemes. Did you know there are 12 spelling choices for the sound ‘e as in bee’?? Amazing!!! In Maths we are learning key concepts in order for us to complete an investiga-tion that is planning a trip around Australia in under 24hours. So far we have looked at 24hr time, time tables, compass points and co-ordinates. This Friday will see our homework speeches due and next week, we will be listening to each others speeches. Until next time.

ANU Maths DayBy Caroline DickinsonOn May 25th, I took five of our best year 12 Maths students to represent

the college at the annual ANU Mathematics Day in Canberra. The day itself consisted of four separate activities taking about an hour each with each teacher being allocated as a supervisor for the day to another school. The first activity for the day is called the Group contest. For this task the team of five work solidly for an hour solving a given selection of problems. The second activity is the Swiss contest. This involves competing directly with another team seated in an alternating pattern trying to determine the rule for a given table of values. The third activity is the Cross contest. For this the group of five are split into a duo and trio and work separately on solving a rather large maths crossword. The final activity is the Relay contest, where again the team are split and work on different questions to each other, racing the clock to run their answers to each question to the front of the hall where all the supervi-sors sit in a long straight line. The students that I took; Declan Harley, Quin Robinson, Alex Waddell, David Fantham and Sebastian Weber, had a really good day, performed very well and were excellent ambas-sadors for our college. In fact we were the only school from the Bega Valley to be represented at the competition. The day is an excellent op-portunity for our students to mix with students from other schools, and

to broaden their perspective before they leave school and perhaps head off to university themselves.

Australian Mathematics CompetitionOne of the world’s largest school-based mathematics competitions with 15 million entries since 1978 will be held on Thursday 9 August 2018.About the Australian Mathematics CompetitionThe Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first Australia-wide mathematics competition for students. It has since spread internationally, with students in more than 30 countries attempting the same problems. In recent years the competition has been available in two formats (online and paper), al-lowing even more students to participate worldwide. The AMC is for students of all standards. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 60 minutes (Years 3–6) or 75 minutes (Years 7–12). The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking and questions are designed so that they can be answered just as quickly without a calcula-tor as with one. The problems get more difficult through the competi-tion, so that at the end they are challenging to the most gifted students. Students of all standards will make progress through the problems, and also be challenged along the way.The AMC is available both in hard copy and online format, with no dif-ference in the questions or time requirements.Entries are $6.50 per student and close Friday 15th June for paper ver-sion and Thursday 2nd August for the online version.

Weber takes spoils in Endurowarm-up rideBega District News

HSC student Sebastian Weber hit on the right formula Saturday to claim victory in the Tarra Motors Winter Warmers mountain bike series in Tathra. The 25km race was the final hit-out before the June 10 Tathra Enduro, and Webber showed his year 12 study load had no affect on his speed. In a three way battle, Weber beat perennial Sam Parker (Bega) and Charlie Todd (Tanja) in the open male category. In the women’s event two imports, Vanessa Knee from Jindabyne and

Carrie Hamm (Colorado) took the top placings, with Tathra’s Stacey Defina third. There was also a strong showing of juniors with primary school students Jasper Defina claiming the Sport Male category from Liam Thompson. Otis Waratah was fourth.Weber said his increased HSC study load had meant less time training on the bike, but it didn’t show on Saturday.“It was pretty tight racing, Charlie, Sam and I were together most of the way, but with about five kilometres to go I lifted the pace, and then I was alone,” he said.“The tracks were amazing, A little dusty but riding really well.”Prior to Saturday’s race over 55 volunteers turned out to rake the trails, as part of the Tathra MTB Club’s Bushfire recovery Rake ‘N Ride day. The group, which included locals as well as rakers from Canberra, Jindabyne, Sydney, Mallacoota, again had the trails cleaned in an hour.Tathra MTB Club president Andrew Johnson said the raking effort was phenomenal.“I don’t think people realise how much this helps us in the lead up to an event like the Tathra Enduro,” he added.“For the past two months we have been clearing and rebuilding trails, and it has been pretty intense work.“Having 50 people come and give up their morning to rake our tracks, takes the pressure off, and is a great social day.”Johnson said the focus was now on the Enduro, with final track prepara-tions taking place over the next week.“We’ve done all we can on the Bundadung, now we are going to con-centrate on cleaning up the Fire shed.”Entries to the Tathra Beach & Bike Enduro are open. There are events for all skill and fitness levels. Kids races include the free Bega Cheese Children’s Chase 1km and 3km events. There is also the Lap it Up 5km , 10km, 15km and 20km lap races. This event takes place on easier 5km loop. For those seeking a bigger adventure Sunday’s races include the Tuff 25km, Mitas 50km and King Nelba 100km.For full event details, entry and schedule visit: www.tathramtbclub.com

A purple tie dye jumper and a yellow gold wedding ring were lost

at our Country Fair.

If you have seen these items, could you please hand them in to reception.

Our SCAC lost property is also overflowing with unclaimed items,

particularly a large selection of school jumpers without names on them.

If you are missing any items, please come and have a look. Lost property

is located behind reception.
