Message from the PrincipalDear Friends,
We’ve had another exciting year and I am so happy to share the 2015-2016 Annual Report with you. Every year, we work harder to provide the best Catholic education in Lincoln Heights and this would not be possible without your generosity. THANK YOU!
As you will see in this report, three students were awarded with college scholarships from the Angels Baseball Foundation, one of our own alumnae was honored as Woman of the Year from Representative Adam Schiff, U.S. Representative for the 28th California Congressional District, and our Campus Ministry teacher had a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Holy Land. I hope you enjoy reading about our talented Comet family.
Sacred Heart is blessed with our amazing students and our generous partners. On behalf of our students, parents, teachers, and staff at Sacred Heart, thank you for your continued investment in Catholic education. Your support is giving girls the opportunity to reach their full potential and share their greatness with others. We wish you many Blessings! In Great Hope,
Raymond Saborio Principal

Angels at Sacred Heart High School!Arte Moreno, owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Member of the Angels Baseball Foundation and his wife Carol, along with Mark Merhab, Chairman of the Angels Baseball Foundation and Dennis Kuhl, Angels Baseball Chairman visited the Sacred Heart campus during Catholic Schools Week on February 2, 2016. They were on campus to meet and award two Comets with four year scholarships to the university of their choice! These scholarships became possible through the efforts of Denise De La Rosa Salazar ’80 who introduced our school to the Angels Foundation. We salute this Foundation for the positive impact of higher education they are making possible for many qualified students in the Los Angeles area.
After a luncheon in the library to meet our scholars and their families, Mr. Moreno, Mr. Merhab, and Mr. Kuhl presented the scholarships to Judith Estrada ’16 and Alexis Herrera ’16 at a special school assembly. Each girl was also presented with a personalized Angels baseball jersey with the number 20 on it, representing the year they will graduate from college. A few weeks later, after learning first-hand about our school and our girls, the Selection Committee awarded another scholarship to Judith’s twin sister, Edith Estrada ’16. These young ladies are all CSF and National Honor Roll Society members.
Alexis is currently studying at the University of San Francisco. Judith is attending UCLA and living on campus. Edith is living in Malibu and attending Pepperdine University. We are proud of these three young women and eager to continue to support their success. Left to right: Judith Estrada ’16, Mark Merhab, Alexis Herrera ’16, Arte Moreno,
Carol Moreno, Denise De La Rosa Salazar ’80, Tony Salazar, and Dennis Kuhl.

Alumna Dolores Diaz-Carrey Awarded “Woman of the Year!”
It is with pride that we recognize Dolores Diaz-Carrey '57 as one of our outstanding Comets. This last April, Representative Adam Schiff, US Representative for the 28th California Congressional District named Dolores as the “Woman of the Year” in his district. “Each year,” he said, “we pay tribute to the contributions and sacrifices made by our nation's women.” He continued: “I would like to recognize a remarkable woman.” We think he made an excellent choice!
After enumerating Dolores' early education at Sacred Heart Elementary and Sacred Heart High School, he recognized her for her education at Holy Names University (BA in Spanish), USC (MS in Education), UCLA (Counseling credential) and CSULA, where she obtained her Administrative Credential. He continued:
“A consummate educator, Ms. Diaz-Carrey's long career in education began as a teacher at the elementary and junior high school levels in Northern and Southern California, after which she moved to Mexico City to teach. In 1969, Dolores joined the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) where she worked for 35 years. In LAUSD's Division of Adult and Career Education, she worked in many capacities, including as an ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor, teacher adviser, counselor, assistant principal, and principal. From 1973 to 1975, Ms. Diaz-Carrey was Executive Producer of the first bilingual ESL television series for adults, POCHTLAN, for which she was awarded an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. From 1987 to 1998, she was Principal of Garfield Community Adult School and while there, founded a family literacy program for adults and their children. In 1998, Dolores became Director of the Adult Instructional Services Unit where she was responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of all the curricula for adults, including ESL, high school diploma, basic education, parenting, and nursing programs--during this time, she was also Program Director of the Community Based English Tutoring program.Dolores is a longtime member of the East Los Angeles Rotary Club, where she serves as the Rotarian adviser for a youth club, and is the 2016-2017 club president. In 2011, she received the Rotarian Foundation District Service Award. Dolores is a member and past President of the San Rafael Library Associates, a support group for the San Rafael Library in Pasadena, and is a generous supporter of the arts, including the Los Angeles Music and Art School, and the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles.”
Thank you, Representative Schiff, for recognizing and applauding the boundless energy, endless dedication and remarkable spirit of our Dolores! We are also so proud of her! Congratulations and many blessings on you, Dolores!

In the summer of 2015, Campus Minister and religion teacher, Celeste Jalbert attended a 10-day trip to Israel sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles. The Holy Land Democracy Project immerses educators in the history, culture, and government of the Holy Land while visiting the holiest sites for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. From politics to intimate Sabbath meals with host families, the program enlightens educators to teach a dynamic and interactive 5-lesson course, "Many Faces of Israel", once a year for five years. The following is a reflection from Ms. Jalbert’s experience.
“My summer in Israel was the trip of a lifetime! It was just amazing in its detail, its depth, and the comprehensive nature of what we experienced and were taught. As a practicing Catholic, to be where Abraham lived, and walk where Jesus walked and realize this is where my church began is a moving experience beyond description. As a religion teacher, to learn more about the history of the Holy Land, the Jewish roots of our Christian faith, to see where Jesus lived, taught, sailed,
‘It’s about what you’re willing to sacrifice for what
you believe.’
performed numerous miracles, and walked to his death gives a much greater depth and awareness to what I teach. As an educator, to meet teachers and students at different schools in Israel, to hear the issues they deal with and the creative solutions they develop was inspiring. As a world citizen, to speak with Palestinians, Jews, Bedouins and Israeli Christians, to go to the borders between Israel and the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and Syria, to see bomb shelters in public parks and behind homes, to touch a stockpile of bombs held in a glass case in the center of town, and to hear Syrian bombs exploding in the distance made me realize that the situation in the Mideast is much more complicated than the news reports would have us believe. No one is 100% right in Israel; no one is 100% wrong.
I asked our Rabbi what he hoped for us from this trip and he said, ‘I hope you fall in love with Israel.’ And, I did! We spoke with a woman whose farm is on the border between Israel and the Gaza strip, who has endured daily bombings for 14 years, and never has more than 30 seconds to protect herself
and her family. ‘Why do you stay?’ I asked. She replied, ‘I give myself the right to be naïve,’ meaning she gives herself the right to hope, to believe in the future, to do all she can to work for peace and make sure that Israel survives. Our amazing tour guide said, ‘It’s
about what you’re willing to sacrifice for what you believe.’
That is Israel in a nutshell: beautiful, complicated, troubled, exciting, faithful, frightening, historic and hospitable. With a high cost of living, few natural resources, and danger on all sides, Israeli people remain one of the most happy and satisfied countries in the world. They have a joy of life, of everyday experiences, of community, of history and a sense of purpose that unites them. I am still extremely grateful for this extraordinary experience and opportunity.” – Celeste Jalbert
