SERVANT-LEADERSHIP (Mathew 20:25-28)
I. THE CREATION MANDATE
A. The Creation Mandate (Gen. 1:26) is God’s original plan for mankind mankind to rule and reign
as God’s representatives over His creation.
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish
of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the
creatures that move along the ground." (Gen 1:26) - NIV
B. The Fall: work becomes frustrating. The ground is cursed so that only with constant labor will it
display limited fruitfulness.
C. The book of Revelation ends with mankind restored to the place of ruling and reigning with
God.
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for
the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. (Rev. 22:5)
If we endure, we will also reign with him. (2 Tim. 2:12)
D. It’s for this purpose that Jesus came: to save us from the effects of sin and death, to redeem us
and restore us to God’s original plan for mankind. (Eph. 1:9-11)
E. We related to our world not as a Monk running away from the world, or conquering the world
as a Christian CEO, but as a Gardener, taking the raw materials of God’s creation and cultivating
it with creativity and wisdom to bring it to maximum fruitfulness. Without Jesus as our Boss,
work becomes meaningless, frustrating, and a burden. With Jesus as our Boss, we can serve
God, serve people, and cultivate creation with wisdom and creativity.
F. God created mankind to rule and reign, to have dominion, subdue, etc… It can sound harsh,
unyielding, domineering, subjugating. What does that look like? How do we obey God’s
creation mandate? A key that unlocks our hearts to fulfill God’s creation mandate is example of
servant leadership that Jesus demonstrated for us.

II. KINGDOM AUTHORITY: SERVANT-LEADERSHIP
A. There is a difference between the world’s understanding of leadership and the Kingdom of
God’s operation of leadership.
- 2 -
Matt. 20:25-28 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the
Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26
"Yet it
shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your
servant. 27
"And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave -- 28
"just as the
Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
The Message paraphrase: “You’ve observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how
quickly a little power goes to their heads. It’s not going to be that way with you.”
B. David knew that God had established him as king. (2 Sam. 5:12)
C. Servant-Leadership is not a personality type. There are all sorts of leaders in the Bible.
Introverts, extroverts, etc… Peter, John, Barnabas, Paul, etc…
1. Servant-leadership is getting God’s perspective on the people around you. Your heart
breaks for those because you sense God's heart for them. They’re not where they could
be. So you travail in prayer and go low to serve. This is where authority is born.
2. Leading with a servant-heart gives you the conviction to keep going, even when people
don’t like you, when you’re not appreciated, misunderstood, and when you’re not liked
by everyone.
III. LEADING WITH GOD’S HEART
A. Servant-leadership is not passive. It’s not door-mat theology: let everyone do what they want
and you shrink back. Servant-leadership is not passive. Servant leadership is intentional. Q: Was
Jesus a passive leader? (Matt. 21:12; 15:7)
IV. APPLICATION
A. Begin with your heart content in God. (Psa. 27:4). Don’t find your identity in your ministry or
your gifting. (Phil. 1:21; c.f. Eph. 3;16-19)
B. Don’t become an “anointing” junkie.
2 Sam. 5:12 So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He
had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
C. Don’t let the praise of man become your food. (John 12:42-43)
D. Serve God faithfully in the mundane things of everyday life. (Matt. 11:29)
E. Life for the affirmation that comes from God (Matt. 25:23)

shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your
servant.
(Matt. 11:29)
