life, livelihood, culture, literature and sports etc. with direct participation of local community people using local dialects. Presently 160 hours programme are airing per day on different issues through using different progarmme formats, like Magazine, Live, Talk Show, Public service Announcement (PSA) Promo etc. Around 1000 Youth Women & Youth are working as a rural broadcasters in these Radio Stations. Community Radios have become the voice of community people especially for women and exchanged from mainstream media. Our commitment in the observance of World Radio Day, 2020 is to create space and place for individuals of a society regardless one’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious and political beliefs or other ideologies as well. Hence we believe that enduring power of radio to promote diversity can assemble a more peaceful and inclusive world.

On this World Radio Day 2020, we acknowledged the efforts of Community Radio for serving the voice of disadvantages community and promoting their rights and cultures. Radio is the most accessible mass medium of communication in world. The low income population and remote areas people can easily afford and access the radio. As well as it reach wide audience. Community radio becoming most popular in Bangladesh. And it has opened a new arena for both the policy makers as well as grassroots people to be involved in the development process of their community. Community radio serve geographic communities and communities of interest. Community Radio helping us in addressing social, economic, cultural, agricultural, educational, health, water, sanitation, peace keeping and disaster related issues more effectively. Community radio developing their contents in own languages and serving as a voice that promotes the own cultures, traditions, and belief systems. For instance, YPSA’s Community Radio (Radio Sagor Giri FM 99.2) is now servicing around 0.3 million people and most of them are disadvantages community, ethnic and person with disabilities. The community radio is now helping on their empowerment process. It is very important for us on assuring access to information and assuring rights of disadvantages people to meet the targets of SDG as No one Left Behind. I believed community radio is now playing positive role on that process. The theme of World Radio Day as Radio and Diversity is most appropriate theme on considering the real world. Radio is one of the communication medium in the world who is addressing the diversity. It connects people regardless of gender, sexual orientation, religion, cultural background or disability.

Bangladesh Betar (Radio) is onlv state run Radio broadcasting house and the largest medium in Bangladesh. Since its establishment it has been playing enormous role in developing the country and improving people's life through broadcasting different types of programs and news. Bangladesh Betar is improving itself time to time with modern technology in line with people's thrust for knowledge and information. Besides. bringing

diversity in all its news and programs, Betar also has diversified all its means to reach the target people verv easily, and spontaneously. Now easily' can listen Betar using Apps in mobile phones, Live streaming, Social Media, strong FM transmission system etc. On this back drop, I strongly believe that this year's theme 'Radio and Diversity,' is time befitting and essential to make the medium more peoples friendly.

Who hasn’t lived with radio in their life? We would be hard-pressed to find anyone in the world who hasn’t found solace in music, news, and other human stories being shared over the radio. If we think about the possible strong role the radio could continue to play to raise awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we might image skits and other creative attempts to capture voices from around the world about diverse strategies being used to implement the SDGs in local communities – thereby empowering listeners from every corner.

Radio works as a source of entertainment and information across the globe. It gives much pleasure and knowledge through broadcasting various entertaining and awareness programmes. Radio has been established a relation with different kinds of people regardless of race, sex, age, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability etc. The theme of this year’s World

Radio Day is “Radio and diversity”. It is very much related to the nature of Radio programmes. Radio won the mind of general people because of it’s diversity. One of the popular themes of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is - Leaving No One Behind.

We can achieve the promise of SDGs by using the diversified radio programmes. In this connection,

radio needs to undertake creative initiatives to reach at the doorstep of general people.

We should extend our cooperation to radio stations to produce more programmes connecting different

cultures and languages. Radio should cover disadvantaged people through making diverse

programmes. Bringing those disadvantaged people on board is one of the challenges. People need to

be integrated with the mainstream for the development of the country. I trust that radio can contribute

to achieve sustainable development goals as well as can improve standard of human life by producing

diverse programmes.

When we hear the word “Radio”, the first thing that comes to our mind that

it is a medium that we use for listening purposes. Such as entertainment,

news’s about one’s country news, international news, political news etc.

Does “Radio” serve only these purposes only? The answer is no. Radio

and diversity, what does it indicate, does it only represents one’s country’s

political news, sports news? Radio and Diversity indicates that all the

people of one’s country gets to know about another country’s culture, their beliefs, their norms etc. In

today’s radio stations it does not only says about news of the whole world but it’s a one way to

communicate with other people, to know about them, to hear their stories, to hear their lives story that

will not only give us entrainment but will give us hope and courage to take the same brave step, that

person taken for their life to change. People have many difficulties in their life, they get frustrated easily,

lose hope. People either give up or tries to find a medium that will help them to restore their life again.

One of that medium is what I strongly believe is that “Radio”.

In perspectives of people’s lives, radio is not a medium that helps them entertainment but also helps

them to give knowledge, helps them to find that “ONE VOICE” that inspires them. But in Bangladesh

where many people cannot afford computer, tv, Ipad etc, they listen to that one medium that still today

inspires them is Radio. In today’s “RADIO and DIVERSITY” world unfortunately in Bangladesh, in

particular there is still under-representation of ‘Women’, ‘People from minority ethnic backgrounds’

and ‘Disabled people’.

In these people’s lives that one medium “radio” that gives them hope, encouragement these people are

still under represented. They cannot even hear the “Radio” on a daily basis. Bangladesh to be able

improve and the rest of the world, there needs to be urgent focus on attracting disabled and minority

ethnic talents, and helping women to progress to senior roles. Broadcasters must take an innovative

approach to attract the widest pool of talent, regardless of people’s social backgrounds. We all

understand that meaningful progress on diversity takes time, commitment and understanding. So on

this “WORLD RADIO DAY” I hope that radio and diversity will open up a new path for all the people

around the world that make everyone’s life beautiful, warm, kind, and most have enough courage to

make a stand for their selves.

In 1971 Radio was the only media to know the situation at the time of

freedom fight of Bangladesh to the freedom fighters. Radio has played a

major role in victory of Bangladesh.

Radio is the most portable live broadcasting media still all over the world. In our busy days it is not

possible to get update of news from TV. Its radio which we can get access anytime anywhere.

Nowadays radio content and its content creators are producing famous and viral contents and many of

listeners are listening. Radio is a powerful media to reach every class of people and can create a

bonding with diverse group of people and this power can make a positive change or it is possible to

make positive change in the society. Also radio has the power to show the human rights and can

represent every class of people in the society.

‘Community radio (CR) stations, among the other models of radio

broadcasting, play a major role in reaching out to local communities. They

provide a platform to broadcast folk songs, oral traditions, oral narratives,

ballads etc. and thereby ensuring that this diverse intangible heritage is

passed from one generation to another. Often around the CR stations,

large migrant populations are present so the CR stations broadcast in

multiple languages and dialects catering to several of these migrant

groups. Many CR stations have developed a system of programming

where the migrants from the target locations can communicate with the migrants of source location

thereby impacting diversity of programming and voices in a big way. CR station also have a rather

transformative effect on the mainstreaming of gender and empowerment of women.

In several UNESCO supported programs it has been observed that many grassroot women completely

transform when they take charge of CR stations as community reporters and anchors. Radio,

historically, has always been used as an efficient media to reach out to masses. More recently it has

also has been used as medium to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of UN 2030 agenda,

directly supporting both target 11.3 which aims to enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and

capacities for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management in

all countries and target 16.10 which aims to ensure public access to information and protect

fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international

agreements. Radio, specifically community radio stations, can become a very potential tool to ensure

media pluralism, bringing in diverse voices which needs to be heard by all.

Globally Radio is the most widely used mass medium that has the ability to reach out the widest audience, Radio is the voice of the voiceless community people for eras; In Bangladesh Radio is the most affordable participatory mass medium and irrespective of age, cast, color or class radio produce message for everyone including the marginalized audience at rural level. Even at 2020 we all love to listen to radio, this timeless mass medium never lost it popularity worldwide. 13 February is a date proclaimed by UNESCO to celebrate radio broadcast, improve international cooperation among radio broadcasters and encourage decision-makers to create and provide access to information through radio, including community radios. Let us celebrate POWER of RADIO on the occasion of the world Radio Day with the 2020 theme “Radio and Diversity”. Let us portray our diversity through the magic medium RADIO by inviting listeners to broaden their horizons, to discover new perspectives and to foster intercultural understanding, radio is a humanistic medium that helps to combat prejudice and discrimination.

It’s my pleasure to greet all concerned on the ‘World Radio Day 2020’ on

behalf of SKS Foundation and its sister concern Radio Sarabela98.8 FM.

Foundation has been working as a national non-government organization

rooted in Northern Bangladesh. SKS is supporting the poor & oppressed

segments of the society to fight exclusion, deprivation and injustice with multi-sectoral development

interventions. Upholding the spirit of SKS Foundation ,Radio Sarabela has been supporting the hard to

reach people in char areas of Gaibandha contributing to the rights of the people’s access to information.

Covering around 25km radius of Gaibandha, the Community Radio Sarabela promotes mass

entertainment and creates awareness on education, culture &heritage, health, agriculture, environment,

legal aid& rights, etc focusing on the hard to reach char dwellers and river erosion victims.

As a media, Radio has still strong presence and pivotal role to reach people wherever and whenever

for its technical convenience. I do believe, participation of community people and inter-cultural practice

has made Radio distinct. To establish communal harmony, fraternity and peace, it broadcasts different

programs, and arranges courtyard discussion and view exchange meeting at community level. Besides,

Radio brings out the lives, livelihood, success, possibilities, challenges, and vulnerabilities of

marginalized people. For its responses in natural calamities, Radio has been supporting the victim

communities with information and awareness building and thus gained people’s acceptance. Ensuring

people’s participation, Radio has been broadcasting different programs/news. I believe, as Radio is not

confined only in entertainments, it has tailored education, information and entertainment in a line and

thus playing a diverse role in ensuring people’s right to information.

However, Radio has challenge as visual media come with audio and video features. To cope with other

media, Radio has come in accessible devices and channels likewise online and mobile. As challenges

comes, Radio needs to think about people’s conveniences and their changed habits. Here, Radio

professionals and technicians should innovate how to make Radio more people-friendly over other

media. On this day, I sincerely thank UNESCO for this initiative and wish all the success of the ‘World

Radio Day 2020’

BBC Media Action believes radio has the power to do good and change

lives. Right now, in Cox’s Bazar, our weekly podcasts are helping Rohingya

refugees access critical, life-saving information and talk about the issues

that matter most to them; and our Rohingya language audio drama is

helping shift deep-rooted attitudes connected to violence against women.

Elsewhere in Bangladesh, our weekly youth radio programme – Hello Check! – is helping young people

to open up conversations with their families around relationships, careers and education, reducing the

drivers of child marriage. This World Radio Day, I am proud that BBC Media Action is part of the rich

and varied family of organisations using the power and creativity of radio to help improve lives across

Bangladesh.

Following the originality of social medium, Radio service would be a best space to share experience, thoughts, views, and ideas within a community and between diverse background people from different part of Bangladesh. Also, radio is a cost effective and an environment friendly communication space for societies that can engage people with the

quest for co-existence. Besides, it would be a station for meaningful conversation between many different faiths, identities and cultures with a view of reviving history of plurality in Bangladesh throughout yearlong programs.

Radio service encompasses the best possibilities to approach the notion of ‘beauty in diversity’.

Despite the rise of the Internet, radio remains the most accessible and affordable media globally. It is particularly important in places like Bangladesh where a low level of literacy and expensive technology prevents a large segment of the population from accessing news, information and entertainment. Thus, the radio can make a huge contribution to the democratization of media access. However, to reach its full potential, the radio needs to create contents that address the needs of the disadvantaged segment of society.

Radio has been serving the world ever since its invention and it is being used as an inseparable means and the most popular form of promotion and communication for different caste, race, society, and community in this globe. With the continuation of its development, radio today has been succeeded to reach diverse people around the globe through various

content and programs by innovating multi-featured ways of broadcasting. For example, AM, FM, long wave, digital radio, web radio, community radio etc.

This year, UNESCO is celebrating World Radio Day 2020 under the theme ‘Radio and Diversity’. I believe that the theme is taken to celebrate world radio day of this year is essentially relevant. This is relevant because the present world is passing through a uncertain and risky period, where authoritarian socio-political power is emerging, where only a few influential media become the sole channel in promotion and communication of "other" culture, where many race/community are facing danger to safeguard their cultural practice and identity, particularly tangible and intangible cultural heritage. In this context, radio, as a common and easily accessible channel can play an important role in searching for unity and equality, can organize a common platform for 'dialogue' to reduce global tension. Moreover, it can explore their ideas, plans and vision, can promote their expertise and share their experiences in their own languages. In this world of science and technology, there are still a number of caste, races or groups who are deprived of their basic needs and fundamental rights, and there are a number of people who do not know that they have their own 'words' to describe their world and have own 'voice' to speak about problems and in this way, they can contribute to the change in his world. Radio in this regard can constitute need-based diverse content and programs so that all these people can share, explore among themselves and can regain their self-confidence and their identity. And thus, the radio of 2020 can promote a rational and humane world by inviting people from the diverse community to share and exchange among themselves. Diversity in this sense is mutual understanding, love and respect to "other". This could be the best commitment of this year of World Radio Day-2020.
