A WORD FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRMAN“Seasons change and so do we.” – The Guess Who. “The only thing that is constant is change.” – Heraclitus. “Change is inevitable. “ – John C. Maxwell and several others.

With all of these well-known quotes about change, it’s often easy for me to forget that some things always remain the same. One of those things is the need of the many frail and homebound in the community that we all love; Spartanburg. Another one of

those things is the fact that we can help them.

Mobile Meals forges on into the spring of 2016 feeding over a thousand people a day and they make it seem so easy; but they need our help. Mobile Meals has always been such a strong presence in Spartanburg that it’s easy to feel like we can sit back and watch them do their work, but it takes us all together to make it happen.

Thank you so much for your unending support of the Mobile Meals ministry. Please keep that giving spirit alive because good things like Mobile Meals don’t happen without good people like you.

We hope you enjoyed the Land Cruise last month and that you’re planning to come out to the Hub City Hog Fest on April 15th and 16th this year. Also, the Ben Wright International Challenge Cup XXI is coming up on May 13th at the Carolina Country Club and the Country Club of Spartanburg, as well as the Volunteer Luncheon on April 26th of this year. For more information on all of the many happenings at Mobile Meals, please visit mobile-meals.org.

To the fleet of volunteers, thank you so much. If you have friends and co-workers that might be interested in driving a route or working in the kitchen, please let them know that Mobile Meals can always use more hands.

I hope you have a very happy springtime and that we will see you soon.

Sincerely,

Grey WickerBoard Chairman

FRED DENT NAMED FIRST BOARD MEMBER EMERITUS FOR MOBILE MEALS

Frederick “Fred” B. Dent became the first Board Member Emeritus of Mobile Meals in November 2015. Prior to returning to the board, Mr. Dent served with distinction two terms on the Board of Directors and continued to offer invaluable board expertise to the Investment Committee and Audit Committee.

Weekly, 93 year old Fred Dent delivers meals to the frail and homebound recipients in Spartanburg with his daughter Diana or with his son Rick who also has a delivery route. Fred’s example to serve began many years ago and continues today and every day. You may find him at any one of the many fundraising events including the recent Land Cruise or delivering flowers to raise necessary funding for Mobile Meals.

Born in Cape May, New Jersey, he graduated from Yale University and then served in the United States Navy as a ranked officer. Fred, his wife Millie and four month old son moved to Spartanburg in 1947 following four years of war time service in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He and Millie had a total of five children; two sons and three daughters. In 1958 he became President of Mayfair Mills which incorporated 6 textile plants in South Carolina and Georgia before closing in early 2002. In addition to his involvement in the textile industry, Fred has been a force in national and international business and governmental affairs. He was appointed in 1973 by President Nixon to be the Secretary of Commerce and continued in that post under President Ford until 1975. President Ford appointed him Special Trade Representative, an office he held throughout Ford’s administration.

Fred has served on many boards both locally and nationally. In 1957, he became one of the founders of the Spartanburg Day school. He is very active at the Episcopal Church of the Advent. Born and raised in the north, Fred is every bit a Southern gentleman and loved and respected by all. Fred’s willingness to serve as well as his strength in leadership inspires and encourages others to follow his example.

“Above all of his accolades, Fred truly lives a life of servant leadership. He is often a man of few words, but every word is a gem of wisdom” said Jayne McQueen President and CEO of Mobile Meals.

Mobile Meals’ mission is to glorify God by serving others. Frederick B. Dent exemplifies this mission and is the epitome of a true philanthropist. He was named as Mobile Meals Philanthropist of the Year in 2008 and presented the award at the South Carolina Piedmont Chapter of Association of Fundraising Professionals’ National Philanthropy Day celebration.

Fred gives of himself tirelessly, diligently, unselfishly and generously. His life is an inspiration to all who know him as he sets the banner high: caring, creative, compassionate, a man of great principle and wisdom. This organization is honored to have him as a part of our Mobile Meals family.

The Ben Wright International Challenge Cup gives corporations an opportunity to spend time on the golf course with their co-workers, business partners and friends while raising funding for Mobile Meals. It’s a win-win for everyone.

For 21 years, the Ben Wright International Challenge Cup golf tournament has raised the bar a bit higher each year meeting new expectations. The total funds raised to-date for the tournament is more than 6.5 million dollars. Thousands of home delivered meals have been made available to local seniors who would otherwise go without a daily nutritous meal.

Each company that sponsors a team, half team or one golfer is giving back to Spartanburg. On May 13th, more than 220 golfers will take to the course on Carolina Country Club or The Country Club of Spartanburg. It’s not to late to add your company to the outstanding list of sponors.
