Camp Ramah in Wisconsin is located approximately 350 miles from Chicago. The camp is situated on 150 acres of beautiful forest on the shores of

Lake Bukatabon. Need and non-need based scholarships are available. Additionally, need-based scholarships are also available for USY/Ramah Israel programs. To apply, please contact Rabbi Slosberg at 458-5359 or [email protected] before the November 30, 2016 application deadline.

Quotes from former participants:

• “The program is, conceptually and in practice, brilliant. This was far and away the finest learning experience I have had. There is something to be said for traveling with a Melton educator.”

• “I didn’t enjoy it – I LOVED IT. I’ve been to Israel so many times before, but this was so different – very stimulating and wonderful!”

• “The perspective that Melton put on 3,000 years was astounding, a perspective of who I am, where I’m from and why I am the person I am: a deep, rich understanding of the history of Israel and the Jews.”

• “The hotels are excellent and the food is terrific. I learned about the past and the present, and somehow whatever I am learning is relevant to me and my life today!”

• “I loved the inclusion of poetry and literature, as well as biblical sources.”

• “This structured, well-thought out tour was of the highest quality, an excellent combination of education and tourism, due to the wonderful educators – well-trained, well-informed enthusiastic discussion leaders.”

• “A true journey of heart and mind. At each site, we weave together Jewish texts with questions that challenge us to understand the way each experience can help to shape our own Jewish journey.”

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and can take some time off to rejuvenate themselves. The new Board of Trustees met in late June and the meeting was ably handled by Bill Esakov since I had to be out of town. The major point of business was passing the budget for the next fiscal year

and that was accomplished. Much thought and planning went into the creation of the budget by the Finance and Budget Committees and barring any major surprises, the congregation should continue in good financial shape. Speaking of rejuvenation, the work on the preschool HVAC system has begun. Much of the work was started during the two-week summer break at the preschool, however much of the work will be done while classes are in session. The project is too extensive to be done in a two-week period. There will be a rolling-closure of classrooms while the work is done in each classroom, but the preschool will be able to function without too much disruption. It is a necessary inconvenience, but the 60-year-old system is not going to last much longer. Our long-time HVAC contractor, ACCO will be doing the work. They were awarded the job after much thought, deliberation, competitive bids and engineering analysis by independent consultants. It is a major project and we want to get it right!

Finally, I once again have to mention the outstanding efforts being made by all of the volunteers who have helped lead services, read torah and haftorah and make sure we have minyan while Cantor Lipp is on his sabbatical. Deborah and Rabbi Slosberg have also gone above and beyond to make sure that the educational and spiritual mission of the synagogue continues uninterrupted. They will have earned some well-deserved time off when Cantor Lipp returns in late August.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEESBy AJ President, Dr. Armand Rothschild

WISE AGING WITH JOY, RESILIENCE AND SPIRIT

Information-Gathering Session

We’re all getting older. How we face aging – that’s what we’re thinking about. How we take on this stage of our lives with wisdom and spirit. How we move

past what doesn’t fit anymore and welcome what does.

Congregation Adath Jeshurun and Jewish Family and Career Services, with financial support from the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence, are partnering to pilot Wise Aging peer groups. Each group will meet regularly over several months to talk and learn and share and explore together what it means to grow older with intention and to live life fully in the process.

The work is based on groups led by Rabbi Rachel Cowan and Dr. Linda Thal of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, and we will use their book, “Wise Aging: Living with Joy, Resilience, and Spirit.” Together using the text, mindfulness meditation, cultivation of spiritual qualities, gentle movement and mindful listening, we will develop our ability to look toward the future with resilience, meaning and joy.

If you are interested in finding out more and possibly joining one of the pilot groups this fall, join us for an information-gathering session on Sunday, Sept. 25th from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Adath Jeshurun.
