Messenger march 2019
St. Paul’s United Church of Christ + 2227 West Michigan Street + Evansville, Indiana 47712
The ancient Greeks believed that when the gods made the human species, they fell to arguing where to
put the answers to life so the humans would have to search for them. One god said, "Let's put the
answers on top of a mountain. They will never look for them there." "No," said the others, "they'll find
them right away." Another of the gods said, "Let's put them in the center of the earth. They will never
look for them there." "No," said the others, "they'll find them right away." Then another spoke. "Let's
put them in the bottom of the sea. They will never look for them there." "No," said the others, "they'll
find them right away." Silence fell and, after a while, another god spoke, "We can put the answers to
life within them. They will never look for them there." They all agreed. And so, they did.
Dear Friends,
I do not know the historical accuracy of the above story, but I
believe there is truth within it. Many faiths practice
different traditions and rituals, which reflect their beliefs and
truths. We do the same and Lent is a time when we begin
our journey of reflection and preparation on March 6th. I
hope you will join us. The schedule for services and special
classes is enclosed in this newsletter. What do you believe
and how will it influence you as we journey through the cross
towards another blessed Easter celebration and into your
future life? I believe the answers to our greatest needs are found within ourselves and in community
with each other as incarnate vessels of the Holy. I close with the following statement of beliefs, or
Credo, in the form of a prayer:
Holy God be in my mind, that I might let go of all that diminishes the movement of Your
Spirit within me. Discerning God be in my eyes, that I might see You amid all the busyness
that fills my life. Loving God be in my heart, that I can be open to those I love, to those
with whom I share ministry and to the whole human family. Gracious God be in that grace
-filled silence that lies deep within me, that I might live in Christ as Christ lives in me.
Amen.
Pastor Bill
Beginning on March 3rd, Pastor Bill, Pastor Mary, and Kim Armstrong will
be holding a Lenten Study called “Taking Time”. Each Sunday, we will
gather in the Chapel during the Sunday School hour (10:15am) and
take time to look at the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel lesson. After we
look at the Gospel lesson, we will see how that lesson relates to our
Faith Formation initiative. What is our Faith Formation initiative? Not
too long ago, our Sunday School classes gathered and talked about
“What Shall We Be?” in relation to our future and our building needs.
You spoke, and you were heard. The process of developing a Faith
Formation environment that our congregation wants, and needs is the
next step to that conversation. Please join us as we Take Time to
journey with Jesus through the Gospel and apply it to our church and
family life.
Want a sneak peek? You can find it in 3 different places!
1. Booklets for the entire study will be available to pick up at the
Hospitality Center in Parish Hall.
2. Each week, videos about the next week’s topic will be posted on
our church’s website and Facebook page
3. You can also find blog posts and assessments each week on our
church’s website and Facebook page.

special Merom is to them (and
our kids as well). After the

to a “drop-in” lunch to eat and
enjoy entertainment from our

some strong interest from the

all of our materials. Now, all
we need is a volunteer to train

We could use an activity/craft
room helper on Tuesdays 3-
5pm.
We need a front door monitor
on Wednesday’s 3-5pm
Linda Hobbs could use some
another person in the
Homework room on Tuesday,
Wednesdays, and/or
Thursdays 3-5pm. Some days
it is just a matter of listening
to children read to you for
their assignments. Easy-
Peasy!
If you know of someone who
likes to help kids; please send
them my way! You can call me
(Kim) at 812-454-5638 or

Building Project Committee Update Based on the discussion at the Annual Congregational Meeting on January 27, 2019, the Building
Project Committee has resumed work on evaluating facility options that include new
construction. We are leaving no stone unturned, and are looking at all possible options –
including building, renovating, moving, or selling, and possible combinations of these. Our first
priority will be finding a viable option for remaining where we are, with what we need and can
afford, but want to be able to let you consider what else might be possible. We have begun
meeting again with Gary Thomas, the architect who is very familiar with our facility. We have no
answers at this time, but are going to make a full report to you at a congregational meeting after
Easter. We ask that you continue to pray for us. If you have any questions, please contact a
member of the Building Project Committee.
Parish Nursing
March is National Colorectal Cancer Month. This subject is near and dear to my heart since Tom was
diagnosed with colon cancer. Thankfully, Tom’s was caught early and could be surgically removed.
He had no related symptoms. Having a routine colonoscopy literally saved his life! Colorectal
cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and a leading cause of death from cancer.
Our tri-state area has the highest rate of colon cancer in the country. Colorectal cancer affects
all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people ages 50 and older. You may also be at
higher risk if you are African American, smoke, or have a family history of colorectal cancer.
The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly starting at age 50. If you have a
family history, the rule of thumb may be earlier than this recommendation. For example, if your
parent had colon cancer or precancerous polyps, you should be screened 10 years prior to when your
parent first had a precancerous polyp. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer –
that’s why it’s so important to get screened. The good news? If everyone age 50 and older were
screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. Communities, health
professionals, and families can work together to encourage people to get screened. Studies have
shown that patients treated by colorectal surgeons are more likely to survive colorectal cancer because
of their advanced training and the large number of colon and rectal disease surgeries they perform.
Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer:
• Get screened starting at age 50.
• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
• Get active and eat healthy-exercise may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
Talk to your doctor about the importance of getting screened.
