COMMUNITY AND CARE
PRAYERS FOR OUR SERVICE MEMBERS - Please keep in your prayers our members who are in the armed services: Josh Myatt, combat medic in the Army/National Guard; Titan Miller, 2nd lieutenant in the Air Force.
CONFIRMATION MENTORS NEEDED FOR LENT – Kelly is looking for 10 mentors to meet with confirma-tion youth from 7:30-8:30pm during lent (excluding Ash Wednesday) February 21-March 28. During the hour you will have time to get to know your youth by working together on a service project, coloring our huge Lenten posters, or playing a game (your choice). You will also have a small lesson to work through to-gether. The reason why mentoring our young people is so important is because it helps to build relation-ships together within the congregation. We are also called to share our faith together and what better way than to share it with the next generation. If you are able to be a mentor or have more questions, please talk to Kelly or Pastor Susanne. Thank you!
COMMUNION MILESTONE CLASS (First Commun-ion) for 2nd grade students (or older if they haven’t participated before) will be held during Lent. We will meet from 5-6pm in the conference room Wednesday evenings from February 21-March 21. We also ask they attend worship on Maundy Thursday for our an-nual feet washing on March 29. For more information and to register, please contact Kelly at 319-572-3947 or [email protected]

Lutheran World Relief Quilters, a group faith story Marjorie Hawk is laying out quilt squares this afternoon, on a big table in Messiah’s conference room. In fact, quilt squares are everywhere, on every surface in the room. This isn’t everything Marjorie does: her faith gift is handwork, from the Lutheran World Relief quilts she is making today, to the dozens of tiny preemie hats she knits for the University of Iowa neonatal intensive care unit, to red, white and blue children’s quilts that go to the Linus Project, which gives Christmas quilts to kids whose parents are deployed in the military. But today is a quilting day. Marjorie says, “Anyone can help us with our Lutheran World Relief quilts. We have cupboards full of fabric. You could cut some into 10-1/2” square pieces. Come in when the group meets, and help lay the squares out into patterns. Or take the pieces home and sew them into quilt tops while you’re watching TV.” Messiah’s LWR quilters meet regularly, some on Tuesday evenings, more on Wednesday mornings. If you show up, you might be ironing fabric, tying quilts, laying out patterns or pinning the backs on. Oh yes, some quilters take the nearly finished quilts home to sew the backs on. Even more people bring in fabric and old clean blankets for batting. The past two years, Messiah’s LWR quilters have sent over 100 quilts to Cedar Rapids, where a semi collects them and hauls them to the LWF warehouse in Minneapolis. This year, the quilters are a little behind. The working group is smaller, and they need your help. When the groups meet, some quilters work at the big table in the middle of the room. Others sit at sewing machines or at desks. Marjorie and her partner, Joanne Mohr, say they would be happy to put on a Saturday quilt day for anyone who is busy during the work week. And Marjorie assures us, “We are a great group! We get along so well, and of course we chat the whole time we’re together!” I know Jesus loves chatting. It’s part of our life together. And I know Jesus loves quilting. You might too. Pastor Susanne+

SHAPING FUTURES THROUGH FAITH BASED EDUCATION 3, 4, & 5-Year-old Sessions We are busy learning about the Dinosaurs and their habits of the past through books, short videos, music, fingers plays , sand play digging up bones, water play washing them, play dough, painting scenery, playing with them in the block and puppet centers. We are also doing many winter science experiments with snow (when it comes), water and ice. We have many winter projects decorating the rooms and halls showing all our work. Snowpals of many kinds are dancing in our rooms. Starr’s Nature Center Naturalist came to visit and let us explore salamanders with the children. Great fun and learning experience. We also participated in the National School Choice Campaign.
Each child was given a beautiful scarf and a letter thanking their parents for choosing Messiah Preschool for their child’s first School experience. We are currently running our annual enrollment drive. Forms are available on the church website and in the preschool office. If you are interested in providing tuition for a preschooler next session or making a donation to the preschool fund, please see Ms. Margie or Dennis has forms in the church office. Thank you for your prayers for our preschool and it’s children, families and staff.
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY from us to you!
