Temisto, formerly Chapel, is Leo Ekström Sollenmo and Sebastian Lindbom Gunnari, who recognize no boundaries for extreme metal between death metal, black metal, black thrash, war metal, old school death metal, and traditional death metal. Temisto is not too far from the general spirit of old Watain and Nifelheim. In some ways, Temisto sounds like today’s incarnation of the bestial metal of the first EP by Sodom and Destruction, the first EP and album by Sepultura, the first album by Sarcófago, so on and so forth. The vocals are far from the normal growling found in the dominant subgenres of death metal. Instead, the vocals are more maniacal, throat-ripping black metal crazed screams. It’s all feeling: possessed by lunatic growling and screaming, and it sounds awesome. The fast guitar and drumming are another attractive aspect of the recording. The riffing runs through the black thrash, deaththrash and black metal repertoire of signature moves, and fast soloing. The drumming is

barbaric and convincing. Temisto prefers for the recording to sound like underground metal, not too melodic and clean. However, do not mistake this barbaric metal for lack of skill. There is melody all over the place, but it’s done in the way appropriate for the genre. Also, there most definitely are riffs in abundance. This is not one of those “groove” albums that is all loud volume and chugging. Furthermore, unlike some bands in this genre, Temisto works at making the songs different from each other. There are even some passages or interludes of atmosphere that you will find surprising. By doing that the band shows that they are not afraid of adding moods and emotions to the album, and it makes them sound confident and strong.

Logically, I have no idea what’s gotten into the heads of Temisto, who they are musically or even where they come from in terms of music. Be that as it may, but on this recording they have put together an album that has interested me in several ways, as I have been trying to explain above. I have not been listening to this album just for a review. I hear a whole bunch of big and small details that are worth looking into, if you want an extreme metal band that is beyond the novelty of

playing fast (which they do) for the sake of speed, noise and brutality. It sounds to me like there’s an effort to have creativity and extremity on guitar. Naturally, the vocals are more than just some guy growling away on the mic, it’s not another complacent “brutal death metal” band. Temisto, as you can imagine, works with a rather raw production on purpose. On this particular matter is where the band will encounter some objections in some quarters, especially from those that demand a super clean production or from those that require the sounds of a bigger budget. Now, Temisto is no amateur-sounding or youthful inexperience like the Death or Hellhammer demos, but it’s still a chaotic sound overall, still dirty, still nasty. Some want the necro, some want the clinically perfect sounds. There’s no way to please everyone. By the way, those in the know might find it agreeable to learn that this album was produced by ex-Morbus Chron frontman Robert Andersson with Elias Scharmer (ex-Abduction, ex-Mutilate), and mastered at Necromorbus Studio by Tore Stjerna (Watain, Desultory, Repugnant, etc). Apparently, a precursor of Temisto was called Whore, which ended around 2011 or so. Temisto had a demo in 2013 and now this is the debut and it was recorded in 2015. At any rate, one thing is beyond dispute, Temisto is obscurantist extreme metal that leans heavily towards the bestial/barbaric variety. They have a bit of experience and have been around the block a time or two. All in all, the recording offers the listener the knowledge of that experience for an album that brings imagination to the execution of primal metal. The band also saw activity in the 90s. After some stops and starts, in 2014 Ninja finally returned for good to bring the classic-style metal that they did back in the day. You may not have heard of the band, but if traditional heavy metal is in your veins, then you will use this injection from Ninja! Check out what Taste of Khaos says about Ninja: "A soul resides in this music that is grand and powerful, loving these vocals that expand over the tracks giving it all life. Those riffs just hammer away and mean to destroy! It's as if a completely different band just stepped behind the mic, they go from pure and passionate, to a distorted power that can NOT be questioned. Uncanny versatility and talent in this lineup."

OFFICIAL INFORMATION: Since 1997 nobody has heard from NINJA. In 2014 the band had a comeback with a new studio album, but this album was only available on a self-made CD-Rom. The same procedure the band had chosen for their second and third albums. This is probably the reason why they stayed in the underground. Apart from the new album, NINJA's other three albums will be released in a high-quality CD edition by Pure Steel/Karthago Records. NINJA represent traditional German Heavy Metal with good songwriting. Their sound sometimes reminds you of WASP with a pinch of ACCEPT and AC/DC, all done very cleverly. Those bands would certainly like to have songs of a quality like "Thunder", "Vagabond Heart" oder "Blood of my blood" in their program. NINJA are definitely the German rediscovery of 2016! HISTORY: Wuppertal / Solingen are famous for the sharp Knives all over the world, but they are also the Cradle and the Center of German Metal, where famous international acts like ACCEPT started their career. They are also the

hometowns of the Musicians of NINJA. NINJA had been founded in 1986 by Holger vom Scheidt (voc), Ulrich Siefen (guitar), Martin Reinert (guitar), Jörg Lennartz (bass) Christoph Segreff (drums). Each of these musicians had already a creative backhistory. Ulrich Siefen (git) had a band with the Ex-members of ACCEPT Jörg Fischer (git) and Frank Friedrich (drums) called BLACK JACK back in 1982. Holger vom Scheidt had been the Shouter of DANTON and MORDOR in the early 80´s. They played a lot of gigs all over Germany and established also the first Record Deal with DS Recording.

In 1988 the first Album INVINCIBLE was released. This Creation received positive CRITICS by METALHAMMER and positive reactions from the Fanbase. Götz Kühnemund called Ninja the melodic ACCEPT(1989). Intensive Live Touring followed but at end of 1989 Christoph Segreff and Ulrich Siefen had been called to, leave the band, because of personal differences. Christoph Segreff was not a lucky man at all, after an car accident and after a long time choma he finally was relieved in 2009. RIP Christoph,one day we will

meet again! 1992 the remaining members released a self produced album called LIBERTY but this was also not a constant line up. In 1993 after NINJA was dissembled Holger vom Scheidt was the shouter of Ulrich Siefens new Line up US FORCE. They start touring. In 1997 Holger vom Scheidt and Ulrich Siefen bring NINJA back to life again and recorded Valley of Wolves, an album with good Song Material but 1997 was not the time anymore for classic Metal and the Album was not released. Again NINJA was in Hibernation. In 2004 Holger vom Scheidt and Ulrich Siefen recorded a new HARD ROCK Album under the new Name LIVING WRECK but also this formation ends in 2005. In May 2014 Holger vom Scheidt and Ulrich Siefen reunite again under the name NINJA with new songs and a new Album and live Line UP to be released End of 2014. After about a year and a half of writing Atrocious Abnormality entered Sound Lab Studios in Columbia S.C. with engineer Bob Moore in July 2007 to begin recording of the debut full length album "Echoes of the Rotting". www.facebook.com/AtrociousAbnormality ** review by The Man of Much Metal Artist: Omnium Gatherum Album Title: The Grey Heavens Label: Lifeforce Records Date Of Release: 26 February 2016 Ah, Omnium Gatherum. A band that have gone from being an ok melodic death metal band to arguably my most favourite band within the genre. These Finns really are a special outfit and with ’Grey Heavens’ they have once again proved how peerless they are. That said, the sextet will say that they are fundamentally different from the rest of the genre and, to a greater or lesser extent, they would be right to say this. The band refer to themselves as ’adult-oriented death metal’ thanks to the blend of extreme metal and AOR-inspired melodies. Of course, the whole idea with melodeath is to fuse catchy melodies and hooks with extreme metal but there is something fundamentally different about Omnium Gatherum. It is almost intangible but it is like their style of songwriting is just that little bit more sophisticated and honed than the vast majority of their peers.

I remember the moment that I fell in love with Omnium Gatherum like it was yesterday. I was taking the dog out for a walk and was on about the fifth spin of previous album ’Beyond’. Something just clicked, like a moment of enlightened euphoria and from then on, I have been thoroughly smitten. ’Beyond’ ended 2013 as my second favourite album of the entire year. My love of ’Grey Heavens’ blossomed in almost identical fashion; out with the dog again but, rather than one song bowling me over, it was more the vibe of the whole record, the sounds, the mood, the atmosphere. The smile spread and once again, I have found myself well and truly hooked. Omnium Gatherum 2016 is untouched from the previous record and is therefore comprised of vocalist Jukka Pelkonen, guitarists Markus Vanhala (Insomnium) and Joonus ’Jope’ Koto (To/Die/For), keyboardist Aapo Koivisto, bassist Erkki Silvennoinen and drummer Jarmo Pikka. And, based on the output of ’Grey Heavens’, this continuity has paid massive dividends. The blueprint for ’Grey Heavens’ is very similar to its predecessors but if anything, it is a little harsher, a little heavier and a little bit darker. It may be a trick being played on my ears but ’Beyond’ just felt a touch more positive, a little

lighter and ever so slightly softer around the edges. Personally though, it is difficult to pick a favourite between the two because both are magnificent. Instead of an anthemic introductory instrumental, ’Grey Heavens’ wastes absolutely no time in blasting away any lingering cobwebs for the listener. ’The Pit’ is a blood and thunder opener that takes no prisoners thanks to its fast pace, double-pedal drumming and gruff vocals from the outset. Before long though, those unmistakeable synths enter the fray, bringing with them a groovy riff and really nice intricate lead guitar embellishments. And then, at the half-way mark, the track slows to allow a soulful lead guitar solo and some superb clean vocals, almost choral in nature rather than a single voice. The pace quickly increases again and the song races to a conclusion. An exquisite opener. In contrast, ’Skyline’ is a groove-monster, reminiscent of early In Flames in terms of the guitar riff and the cheekiness with which the composition is imbued. I defy anyone who likes quality metal not to listen to this track without a big grin on their face; it’s that kind of song. ’Frontiers’ opens with a big atmospheric keyboard intro before a chugging stop-start riff joins the fray. The keys are instrumental in creating the central melodies on this track and, coupled with a emotive lead guitar line, create an infectious and subtly beautiful chorus. At the half way point, everything quietens to allow the keyboards to take centre stage alongside some hushed clean vocals again, before the song is ushered out via a cracking but all-too-short lead guitar solo. What I particularly love about Omnium

Gatherum is the way in which they don’t ever overdo the clean vocals. They do have a soft and gentle side and they do inject plenty of warm and memorable AOR melodies into their music. However, they never seem to lose sight of the fact that they are also an extreme metal band. As such the wonderfully gravelly and low bass rumble of Pelkonen is almost ever-present, with those subtle clean vocals only added sparingly when absolutely necessary. This also means that there’s no danger of Omnium Gatherum descending into that dreaded emo or metalcore territory. As with the last few albums, the Finns include a longer, epic track into proceedings. This time, it is present in the form of the delectable ’Majesty And Silence’. One of the most striking aspects of this track is the inclusion of acoustic guitars to such an extent. This is a more atmospheric and sprawling number that features some achingly beautiful melodies as well as something approaching a progressive metal structure as it shifts from one idea to another, flitting from light to shade, heavy to soft and melodic to harsh seemingly at will. The vocals even veer into more black metal territory at one point. As the title suggests, this is a majestic track, one of the album highlights, of which there are many. Elsewhere, I love the bright and breezy feel of ’Foundation’ and the almost power metal leanings of ’The Great Liberation’ that also has a faint Children Of Bodom hint to it as well as an absolutely killer last ten seconds. ’Ophidian Sunrise’ reintroduces the acoustic guitar alongside some of the best melodic moments on the album, the instrumental piece ’These Grey Heavens’ is nothing short of sublime in terms of the bittersweet atmosphere it creates and closer ’Storm Front’ concludes the album as it began; fast, furious, heavy and powerful.

There’s really not much more to say about this record. It is exactly the kind of album that I hoped for from this talented group of musicians, a band that continue to grow and go from strength to strength. With ’Grey Heavens’, Omnium Gatherum have just increased their stock further and, for me at least, stand at the very summit of the melodic death metal genre. NEWS: Assorted Heap The Experience of Horror label: Vic Records release: 22 February 2016 This is a reissue for all the maniacs that love to find the cult bands. This is death/thrash from Germany. OFFICIAL INFORMATION Assorted Heap was a cult death / thrash Metal band from Aurich, a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. Their debut demo, "Killing Peace", was recorded in early 1988 and received very good reviews from many underground magazines. In 1991, the band signed a deal with new extreme metal label 1MF records (Torchure, Blood) and recorded their debut album in the Dust Music Studio. The album "The Experience Of Horror" was originally supposed to be just an EP / mini album. The original LP had six tracks, the CD three additional bonus tracks (‘Terrorized Brains’, ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Frisia Non Cantat’). This re-issue features all nine original 1991 recordings plus the demo 1988 as bonus, including two never before released tracks from these same recording sessions. All songs are remastered by Assorted Heap guitars player Klaus Kessemeier. Special guest is S.L. Coe (ex Scanner, ex Angel Dust), backing vocals on ‘Unexpiated Bloodshed’.

Assorted Heap was a cult Death/Thrash Metal band from Aurich, town in Lower Saxony. The band was born from the ashes of T.G.T, band in which the drummer Thomas Marter and the guitarist Gunter Groen militated. In fact, decided to play harder and faster music, they left the band and immediately started looking for other members for their project. They found the singer Dirk Schiemann and the bassist Joachim “Lord” Meyer, who played in the Death Metal band Slaughter. The band started practicing in September 1987 and shortly afterwards developed its own style, based on powerful, fast rhythms and rough, extreme vocals. Made the first recordings, the group members agreed to add a second guitarist to the line-up, in order to make the sound more varied and powerful. So, during a party, they met the guitarist Klaus Kessemeier, who already played in a metal band from Aurich: the line-up was now complete. The first live appearances of Assorted Heap were together with bands like Tankard and Protector. The first demo of the band, "Killing Peace", was produced in a small closet (which was the band's rehearsal room) in early 1988 and received very good reviews from many underground magazines (Black Thorn, Morbid Mag, Aardschok, Metal Hammer ... NL). With this demo, which sold

about 400 copies, Assorted Heap earned the first fans in the local metal scene and proposed as one of the most brutal Thrash bands in Europe. In 1990, following the success of the previous demo, the band decided to record another rehearsal with songs in a live version. In 1991, the band recorded in the DUST MUSIC Studio the debut album, "The Experience Of Horror" (which originally was supposed to be just an EP). The album, produced by SL Coe (Angel Dust, Scanner, Disharmonic Orchestra) and distributed by "1 more flop records", was violent, technical, based on fast drums, aggressive and wild vocals , fast and sharp guitar solos. Assorted Heap didn’t cover topics like Horror and Fantasy: for them the horror of real life was enough, in fact they dealed with themes like drugs, crime and rapes (as evident in the beautiful title-track). The album met a good underground success and allowed the band to be recognized as one of the most brutal of Europe in the Thrash scene. Alive, the band played in Denmark, France and in the Netherlands, supporting famous bands like Atrocity or Pestilence and left for the tour with Paradise Lost. In 1992, the band churned out probably its real masterpiece, "Mindwaves", more varied and technical but less violent and fast than the debut. In any case, "Mindwaves" sold fewer copies than "The Experience Of Horror". In the same year the band played the “Swing of the axe”-tour together with the swedish Edge Of Sanity. But, probably due to problems with the label, the band suddenly broke up in 1992, surprising the loyal fan base that supported them. From the ashes of Assorted Heap BK49 was born, which was short-lived and disbanded in 2003 after two albums that didn’t reach the quality peaks of outstanding albums as "Mindwaves" and "The Experience Of Horror".

Not much happened after that as they focused on Susperia – a band they started together with Tjodalv (Dimmu Borgir) and guitarist Elvorn. Abyssic Dreams went into hibernation and in 2012 Memnock wanted to give life to his old project again after coincidentally meeting Andre Aaslie who just had finished the debut album of the orchestral extreme metal band Growth. He told Memnock that he worked on a doom metal project and they decided to exchange ideas for a possible cooperation. This was the beginning of a unique collaboration between the two, and within one and a half year they had material enough to start the recording of the album. Memnock’s band mate in Susperia, Elvorn, was engaged as guitarist, and soon after Asgeir Mickelson (Borknagar, Ihsahn, Spiral Architect a.o) came in to handle the drums. The band changed name from Abyssic Dreams to Abyssic and went into the reputable Toproom Studio to record the album during 2014. The mix & mastering found place at the very same place the winter of 2015. Abyssic is a unique symbiosis of atmospheric approaches in funeral death/doom as well as in the seventies progressive scene. HellArise is a modern metal band that plays thrashy groove metal with growled vocals and singing, too. They are from Brazil and several titles to their name. Trying to get all the different influences from each member in their songs, the result is an aggressive and mixed kind of

music, that travels between Heavy, Thrash and Death Metal. After a brief period and a few gigs playing covers, they began to compose their own songs and prepare to record a demo CD, with their first songs. This work was recorded between April and May, 2010, with Eduardo Murai, producer and friend of some band's members. It includes four songs: "Liar", "Human Disgrace", "Deadfall" and "My Outrage", the last ones characterized by the mixture of grunts and clean vocals, by Morniëtári. Several changes later, in 2012 the band had only Flávia Morniëtári on the vocals and Mirella Max, assuming the drums and guitars too. In the end of the year, they invited Renato Canonico, from Ancesttral band, to record and released the websingle "More Mindless Violence". This single put the name HellArise back on track in the especialized media, receiving excellent reviews and being pointed out as one of the promises for 2013, by the renowned website Metal Samsara. In the end of 2013, the band released their new EP, "'Functional Disorder', having already changed to mixed line-up and abandoning the proposal of being a "girls' only" band completely. The work was released on October 31st and showed a musically more mature and creative band, but even so, more violent. A video for the single 'More Mindless Violence' was released along with it. In 2014, the EP was bought to a physical form by a crowdfunding project, which was successfully accomplished with the help of the fans. And now, it's available on a deluxe digipack edition. This is a free recording from the state of Washington. Metal Archives just calls it “melodic death/power metal,” but it’s definitely not power metal. Bandcamp gives the name of "Justin Quesenberry" and maybe that is the person behind this entity. This publication has only the Bandcamp link, where you can hear and download the 29-minute recording. www.m-hmusic.bandcamp.com/releases ** Crypter Crypter is filthy thrash from Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S. They say that they are currently recording some new music, but not much details are available yet. According to Metal Archives, they started in 2009 and this is their discography: "Out of the Crypt" (2009 demo);"Suffer the Hands of Filth" (2014 album); "Cutthroats from Hell" (2014 live album). The recording is a good, demo-quality recording that indeed shows that this is dirty thrash, raw music built upon the fundamentals: straightforward songs, quick-impact energy, riffs and energetic drumming and angry vocals. The vocals are closer to black metal, actually. You can call it old school extreme metal or black thrash or filthy metal or anything along those lines. For most listeners into this style of music, this will sound interesting, although now the question is probably whether they can improve upon the sound quality a bit. It sounds like real music played by real people, and that's very positive. It sounds real, and it's difficult not appreciate the attitude of the band, really. They have the songs, they have the right perspective and they have their hearts in the right place. All very positive, indeed. Maybe the band will do more updates about the current recording so that we can hear how the new music is going. Friends into extreme metal and independent bands, check this band out and see what you think.
