Van-Am Tool & Engineering, LLC, St. Joseph, Missouri, has recently installed a new Fanuc Alpha C600iA-12 wire EDM.
The 33-year-old company is a full service source for tool and die, metal stamping, machining, metal fabrication, laser cutting, and manufacturing.
The new Fanuc Alpha C600iA-12, purchased from Mc-Clain Tool & Technology, replaces a Fanuc EDM purchased from McClain in 1996. “The reliabil-ity of the Fanuc and McClain’s service were big factors in our choice to choose a Fanuc EDM again,” stated Ed Makos, General Manager.
“The new model has a larger capacity, is twice as fast as the old one, and uses half the wire,” com-mented Preston Punzo, Managing Director of Sales & Marketing. “It will support our new tool and die builds, die maintenance work as well as custom work.”
“This additional equipment is part of our ongoing efforts to expand our capacity and improve our operations,” stated Van-Am’s Preston Punzo. “In some cases, this equipment is doubling our productivity compared to older equipment.”
Van-Am’s services include: complete design and build of pro-gressive, transfer, louver, blank, form, and draw dies; die mainte-nance and repair; short or long run production stamping; general and custom machine work (manual and CNC); wire EDM; design and build of jigs and fixtures; design, build, and repair of special ma-chines; laser cutting and precision CNC press braking; custom fabri-cation and welding; robotic weld-
ing and plasma cutting; vibratory finishing; assembly; packaging, and warehousing.
Van-Am operates in an 82,000-sq.-ft. facility and serves customers nationwide in a wide range of industries, including: agriculture, automotive, construc-tion, electrical, petroleum, govern-
ment, HVAC, pharmaceutical and transportation.

ISM-KC Hears Predictions For Procurement in 2014
ISM-Kansas City, an affiliate of the Institute for Supply Management, held a dinner meeting on March 18th at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Overland Park, Kansas.
The featured speaker for the event was ZYCUS’ VP of Corporate Development Richard Waugh. He spoke about Predictions for Procurement in 2014. ZYCUS is a global consulting firm that specializes in procurement and supply chain solutions.
Waugh’s predictions included: Procurement organizations will become true “profit centers”; The best suppliers (and their suppliers) are the source of innovations and competitive differentiation; Predic-tive analytics will replace reactive analytics; Col-laborating in the cloud will become dominant; and Procurement must think “small” to unlock “big data” opportunities.
The Pre-Meeting speaker was Beth McCarthey of prepKC. She discussed how members can get involved educating local high school students about Supply Chain Management as a career and skills that are needed.

The Mid-America chapter of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) held its Annual Spring 2014 Inside/Outside Reception and Dinner at The Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, Missouri on February 27th.
The featured speaker was MSCI National Presi-dent Bob Weidner. He spoke to the group about economic, business and government trends that will impact the metals industry. He noted that overall the MSCI is more optimistic than pessimistic for 2014. He encouraged everyone to take January and February business trends with a grain of salt due to the impact of severe weather.
Weidner also discussed five forces that will dra-matically change every business model in the future. These included: government growth/involvement; demographics; globalization; consolidation and tech-nology.
In other chapter business, past chapter president Greg Otto was recognized for his service to the chap-ter.

“Work keeps us from the three great evils--bore-dom, vice, and need.” Voltaire (1694-1778)
Some years ago we ran across a simple old poem that told how terrible it was that men and women were loaded into trams early each morning to go to work all day in the factories and mines. The next four lines related how tragic it was that the mines and factories had closed down and the workers now had no jobs to earn a living.
We assume there will always be a love/hate relationship with work, especially if working condi-tions are really bad or just boring. On the other hand, perhaps you’re eager to get to your laboratory each day to try another experiment. You probably wouldn’t even think about it as “work.” This is true for many
entrepreneurs.Now, suppose you played
football as a teen, it would have been a leisure activity. But, once you’ve been drafted and are paid $2 million a year to show up for 21 games and get hit by guys weigh-ing 300 pounds, you might decide to call it work. But, your brother-in-law with a less exciting job might say, “It’s what you always wanted to do. You’re making big bucks and you call that work?”
Kevin D. Williamson had a recent article in National Re-view titled, “To Work Is to Live (The dignity of a day’s labor).” It provides some food for thought. Williamson says most people think they’re just working for a paycheck. But, even if you gave every single person a paycheck amounting to $100,000 a year, or even $100 million, they would still need to work just as much as they do now to maintain our current standard of living.

their jobs may be right in saying that a paycheck is the only rea-son they show up at the office or plant, they are required to produce something, whether it’s tools, food, clothing, houses, cars, or necessary services. It seems that only the government can hand out paychecks for non-production.
Some time ago the Congres-sional Budget Office (CBO) released its evaluation of the Af-fordable Care Act in regard to its effect on the job market.
The report said “The reduc-tion in CBO’s projections of hours worked represents a decline in the number of full-time-equivalent workers of about 2 million in 2017, rising to about 2.5 million in 2024.
“Subsidies that help lower income people purchase an expen-sive product like health insurance must be relatively large to encour-age a significant proportion of
eligible people to enroll. If those subsidies are phased out with ris-ing income in order to limit their total cost, the phase-out effective-ly raises peoples marginal taxes (the tax rates applying to their last dollar of income) thus discourag-ing work.
“If the subsidies are financed at least in part by higher taxes, those taxes will further discourage work or create economic distorta-tions. If subsidies are not phased out or eliminated with rising income, then the increase in taxes
required to finance the subsidies would be much larger.”
So, no matter how you slice it, fewer people will have full-time jobs, more will be unemployed and taxes will go up. What’s re-ally strange is that some ACA sup-porters have rejoiced and called this a wonderful thing. They say that since the people probably didn’t like the jobs they had, now they can avoid job lock and finally have free time to pursue those vocations and activities they really

like. What are we missing here?Lately we’ve had a lot of de-
bate about changing the minimum wage. Here again, Williamson believes whatever the minimum wage it doesn’t “change the physi-cal reality that the value of an hour’s labor is not what you get paid for it but what you produce.
“Money is just a means of fa-cilitating trade, and the real prob-lem facing low-skilled American workers is that they don’t have enough to trade–a condition that will not be relieved by price-fix-ing, which is what the minimum wage is,” Williamson concludes.
A close relative, that once owned several fast food restau-rants, used to throw up his hands in frustration when talking about hiring teenagers.
“Many don’t understand they have to be on time for their shift or wash their hands more than twice a day, or be able to make change, or take care of trash and spills even if that’s not their job description. The parents should be paying me for the first months training.”
Swiss/British philosopher Alain de Botton, author of The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work, writes:
“Our work will at least have distracted us, it will have provided a perfect bubble in which to invest our hopes for perfection, it will have focused our immeasurable anxieties on a relatively small-scale and achievable goals, it will have given us a sense of mastery, it will have made us respectably tired, it will have put food on the table. It will have kept us out of greater trouble.” What more could we ask?

The Kansas City Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Association (NTMA) held a Shop Meeting at United Metal Spinning in Kansas City, Missouri.
The meeting was sponsored by Environmental Air Tech.
KC NTMA Meets At United Metal Spinning
The evening started with tours of the 5th generation family firm. The 84-year-old company offers metal spinning. This unique process takes a flat piece of metal and makes a cyclindrical object without a seam. The pieces produced include: funnels, goblets, light fixtures, fuel cans, missile nose cones, and can be made out of all types of metal including: steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, stainless steel, pewter, silver, and even gold.
United Metal Spinning can produce parts manually or with CNC equipment. This allows them to make prototypes or small runs as well as large runs.
The speakers for the event were Don Hamer, MicroAir Clean Air Systems and Mike Ellis, Environmental Air. They discussed air quality issues and regulations in the industry and the various methods to deal with them.
In other chapter business, Ruco Products, Blue Springs, Missouri, was presented a new member plaque.

The Mo-Kan Chapter of the American Foundry Society (AFS) met on March 18th at the Argosy Casino in Kansas City.
The featured speaker was Leo Baran, AFS Cor-porate Membership Director.
Baran, a longtime veteran of the metal casting industry, brought the chapter up to speed on events and trends in the industry.
His topic was “The State of the U.S. Metalcast-ing Industry Moving Forward.” He noted that while the number of foundries in the U.S. is declining, the remaining ones are larger and the overall output is growing. In 2013 the industry shipped product worth more than $34 billion. This ranks the U.S. second in worldwide production. 2014 and 2015 es-timates anticipate more growth. “80% of foundries are small businesses with less than 100 employees,” stated Baran. “We see growth in ductile iron, alumi-num, magnesium and copper castings.”
