MET/CAL® — industry-leading software forautomated calibrationMET/CAL reflects more than 50 combined-yearsexperience in automated calibration software devel-opment. More calibration facilities have automatedwith MET/CAL than all other products combined.MET/CAL Plus is the most complete software solutionavailable to calibration professionals, so it’s no surprise that it has become the de facto standard incalibration software worldwide.

MET/CAL is a powerful, flexible full-featured auto-mated calibration environment for PCs running theMicrosoft Windows® operating system. It generatesand writes test results to the SQL database managedby MET/TRACK® and enables you to:n Create and edit calibration procedures using a

wide range of standards.n Run the procedures.n Collect test data during the calibration process.n Generate calibration reports and certificates.n Make data available to other software applications

such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

With MET/CAL, it is easy to perform calibrationsfaster and with more repeatable results, and to collectand report a wealth of information about:n Test datan Measurement uncertaintyn Adequacy of standardsn Traceabilityn Procedures usedn And more

MET/CAL Plus 7.1 also includes new support forguardbanding that gives metrologists the option totailor the algorithm to automatically tighten the passlimits associated with a UUT’s calibration specifica-tions. The primary purpose of guardbanding is toaccount for the uncertainty of the measuring equip-ment in the calibration process and thereby to avoidaccepting units that are close to their specificationlimits, but may in fact be out of tolerance.

Guardbanding is particularly important when theTest Accuracy Ratio (TAR) is low. In the case of lowTAR, the uncertainty contributed by the inherentaccuracy of the reference instrument is relativelylarge. Without guardbanding, there is a greater risk ofaccepting an out-of-tolerance UUT.

The heart of MET/CAL Plus is MET/BASE, whichfeatures a powerful, industry standard SQL databaseserver — SQL Anywhere™ from Sybase — for secure, dependable storage of calibration and asset data. Thisrobust database management application protectsyour mission-critical data from loss and corruption. And it’s compatible with the Microsoft Open DatabaseConnectivity (ODBC) standard so you can access yourcalibration data from any ODBC-compatible applica-tion (such as Microsoft Excel or Word) for further pro-cessing and analysis. The package also includesseveral preformatted reports in Crystal ReportsProfessional to add even more power and flexibility toreport information.

Step 2. Adding new items.

As instruments come into the lab for calibration, theyare added to the database. The technician simplyenters basic asset information in an electronic form, selecting from drop-down validation menus to assureconsistent and accurate entry. For brand new assets, fields are provided to capture the model, serial num-ber, description, location, and calibration history sum-mary. Many other fields are also available and can beswitched on as needed. For returning instruments, simply enter the asset number and check them in. Ifneeded, you can add your own fields to track specialinformation about your assets. You can customize thevalidation rules to match your company’s terminology.Information can also be imported automatically withvalidation.

Step 1. Generating recall reports.

Periodically, your lab needs to recall instruments thatare due for calibration. MET/TRACK generates recallreports you can send to your customers and to theuser’s e-mail address and location. These recallreports may also include details of the last calibrationperformed in your lab.

Automated calibration that supports the wayyour lab operatesMET/CAL is structured around the flow of instrumentsthrough the calibration process and addresses a widerange of test and measurement instrument calibrationneeds, from the simple to the complex. It is based onthe traditional calibration model as its framework —comparing an instrument to a standard of knownuncertainty. MET/CAL features a familiar Windows-based interface that makes it easy for users to learnand use, reducing your training and support costs, while making your operators more productive.

MET/CAL “Run-Time”improvements such as:

n New Function Select Codes(FSCs) to control even moreinstrument standards, includingthe new 8508A ReferenceMultimeter.

n Ability to create and use multi-ple directories for procedurestorage and execution.

n Enhanced RF calibration capa-bilities with expanded referencedrivers and support for newinstruments

n An improved user interface tocopy and delete procedures.

n Full support for user-writtenaccuracy files to allow the calculation of test uncertaintyratios (TURs) and measurementuncertainty for user-configuredstandards.

4 Fluke Corporation MET/CAL® Plus Version 7.1

Step 3. Performing automated calibration.

Automated calibration with MET/CAL is fast, repeat-able, and powerful. At first glance, most people see itas a way to perform calibrations faster, and MET/CALcan certainly deliver dramatically improved productiv-ity. However, consistency is another significant bene-fit. With self-documented procedures, you can ensurethat all operators complete all tests and collect appro-priate test data the same way every time the proce-dure is performed. Plain language operator promptsand graphics guide technicians through even themost complex calibrations. MET/CAL also enables youto illustrate operator messages, connection diagrams, and adjustment points within your procedures, usingcommonly used .jpg, .gif, and .bmp graphics formatsto provide additional set-up information.

MET/CAL captures complete calibration results, including traceability data and environmental condi-tions. Technicians can keep track of results in a pop-up screen, with color coding to indicate passed tests, marginal results, or failures. When calibration is fin-ished, MET/CAL saves the information to the data-base, so that you can review it on screen or print it.Complete results records help you identify out-of-tol-erance conditions and satisfy the records require-ments of ISO 9000. The combination of theseautomated easy-to-use features in MET/CAL helps tomake operators more productive and reduces yourtime and cost per calibration.

Step 4. Storing results and update status.

MET/CAL now stores all parameters for every testperformed in unformatted “raw readings” to easereport creation and to support further analysis.Because each test is fully documented for every pro-cedure that is run and traceability information foreach standard is stored in the database, you havecomplete documentation of calibration status, history, adequacy, and traceability for all the test and meas-urement instruments you manage.

Step 5. Printing test reports.

MET/CAL Plus includes a range of reports that can bepreviewed on screen, then printed. At the end ofeach calibration event, the technician can choose toprint calibration test results or a Certificate ofCalibration. All are prepared with Crystal ReportsProfessional, so they can be modified to meet yourneeds or used as a basis for creating your own cus-tom reports.

n A range of calibration intervalsthat can be mapped to anyspecification for your calibrationreferences to allow you to continue to use your calibratorpast a normal fixed cal cycle.

Expanded “measurementuncertainty” control:

n More control over measurementuncertainty calculations toenhance conformance to localcustoms and standards.

n Support for guardbanding, which dynamically adjusts yourtest limits during procedure execution to take into accountthe uncertainty of the measuringequipment. This decreases the risk of accepting an out oftolerance UUT.

Choose from thousands of calibration procedures or write your ownMET/CAL comes with a range of sample proceduresthat can be used as-is or can be modified to meetyour needs. These procedures are also valuable asexamples to guide you through creating your own.

Write your own proceduresYou can write procedures using the MET/CAL col-orized text Editor, which uses a special calibrationprocedure language. Procedures for simple deviceslike DMMs, gauges, and mechanical tools use a verysimple language syntax. Learning to write simpleDMM and oscilloscope procedures can be expeditedby using our AutoPro utility program. It generates pro-cedures by using the device’s specifications. Flukeoffers specialized training for writing more complexprocedures.

Choose standards.Creating completely new proceduresis easy with a little practice.MET/CAL’s powerful procedure

language uses a calibration-oriented building blockapproach. Function Select Codes represent variousstandards and functions used during a test.MET/CAL’s procedure language FSCs support morethan 100 standards and calibrators. For instrumentsnot directly supported, the Run-Time module inMET/CAL can send IEEE or port commands to implement an automated procedure.

You can also receive additional warranted proceduresby subscribing to the MET/SUPPORT Gold supportplan. You can view the current list of available procedures by visiting the MET/CAL Plus page onFluke’s web site www.fluke.com.

Write procedure.Procedures can be as simple or aspowerful as you need them to be. Tocreate a procedure, simply combine

FSCs and test parameters. Each available FSC is com-pletely described in on-line help files. MET/CALincludes a library of commonly used connection mes-sages which will be displayed to the operator duringthe calibration to guide him through instrumentsetups. If test setups are more complex, then you canadd graphic files to be displayed at the appropriatetime to the operator.

Evaluate measurement uncertainty.MET/CAL Plus enables you to estab-lish minimum test uncertainty ratios(TURs) to assure that tests performed

by the calibrator are sufficiently accurate for theinstrument being calibrated. Flagging TURs helpsdemonstrate the adequacy of standards according toISO 9001, 4.11.2a.

Asset data.

Basic asset information is required for each instru-ment that is to be calibrated by MET/CAL. All calibra-tion records as well as maintenance and locationrecords are stored in MET/TRACK using a specificasset number which is established when the initialasset information is added to the database.

123456789

Multiple tables that cover all aspects of your testand measurement tool inventory are linked by anasset number, which you can format to fit your com-pany’s requirements.

MET/TRACK, like MET/CAL, works the way yourcalibration lab works. It manages and stores data theway that works best for you so that you can easilyaccess it to track calibration/maintenance schedulesand for audits and reporting.

Test run.You can execute procedures directlyfrom within the procedure editor intest-run mode to make short work of

tracking down errors. MET/CAL even keeps track oftest uncertainty ratios, instrument specifications andcapabilities, and traceability information to make sureprocedures meet your quality standards for adequacyand validity. And to help you organize your procedures,MET/CAL supports multiple directories, so that you canarrange procedures in logical groups, such as by instru-ment type, or by released and unreleased procedures.

Release procedure.Once you’re satisfied with the proce-dure, release it to production whereyour technicians can replicate all

tests consistently on your workload.

MET/CAL Plus also offers a variety of standardreports prepared with Crystal Reports™ Professional, which is included in the package. These report for-mats cover a wide range of information to help youmeet a variety of documentation requirements, including those for ISO 9000 and similar quality stan-dards. They report on forward and reverse traceabil-ity, allowing you to easily document traceability fromany asset to the equipment calibrated. And MET/CALPlus offers enhanced measurement uncertaintyreporting to provide increased compliance with therequirements of ISO/IEC 17025. In addition to stan-dard reports, such as equipment location and itemsdue for calibration, Crystal Reports makes it easy tocreate custom reports, lists, and labels using datafrom your existing databases. Its graphical user inter-face makes it easy to build reports, and its powerfulquery tools quickly draw values from a variety of datatables, allowing you to easily manipulate the data to:n Calculate and compare data values.n Calculate subtotals and grand totals of field values.n Calculate group averages, count the records in a

group and test for minimum and maximum values.n Test for specific values.n Present data only if certain conditions are met.n Evaluate logical relationships between values.n Convert data from one type to another.n Merge text, graphics and data. Crystal Reports

doesn’t modify the calibration data in your data-base, so you can manipulate the selected data asmuch as you want to produce the reports you needwhile preserving the integrity of your database.

Data integrity and security you can count on Data validation. Your MET/TRACK system is only asgood as the data it contains. To ensure that the infor-mation is entered correctly every time, MET/TRACKincludes two types of data validation. Use RequiredValidation where the entry must be in a validation listfor the technician to enter it. Or use non-requiredChoice List Validation where, if the entry is on thevalidation list, the text box will fill in automatically asyou type. This ensures correct and efficient data entryand makes it easier to search for information. Forexample, an oscilloscope could be described as ascope, an oscope, or a DSO, which would make it dif-ficult to retrieve information consistently. The datavalidation feature in MET/TRACK assures that youidentify an instrument — or manufacturer or depart-ment name or other term — by the same name everytime.

To make data entry even faster and more accurate, you can link key fields on MET/TRACK forms so thatselecting one item causes other fields on the form tobe completed automatically. For example, entering“34401A” could be set up to make “DMM” appear inthe description field and “Agilent” appear in the man-ufacturer field.

Repair tracking and preventativemaintenance.

As each repair or preventative maintenance activity iscompleted, details of that event, including labor andparts costs, can be entered. You can also scheduleperiodic maintenance events. In addition, mainte-nance histories are included to give you a completecost of ownership for all tracked assets.

Reporting

MET/TRACK generates reports to meet a wide rangeof requirements. MET/TRACK includes the QuickReport Builder, which enables you to create ad hocreports quickly on the fly to meet your most immedi-ate needs for information.

Comprehensive calibration data.

Summary calibration event histories as well as com-plete calibration test results are stored in MET/TRACKautomatically for every MET/CAL calibration event. For assets calibrated manually or on different systems, both summary and detailed test results can be manu-ally added to MET/TRACK, giving you one place forall your metrology asset tracking needs.

Page 8: MET/CAL Plus Version 7 - q80united.com V7.1.pdf · with MET/CAL than all other products combined. MET/CAL Plus is the most complete software solution available to calibration professionals,

User permissions. Five levels of security, from“read only” to “system manager,” ensure that onlyauthorized users gain access to inventory data, soyour data remains secure. Because the security ismanaged by the server, all users — even those access-ing data from other applications — must be authorized. In addition to the “Group” security level, permissionscan be granted or prevented for specific features foreach individual user.

Customize MET/TRACK® software to meetyour requirements Rather than forcing you to work with a rigid set offields and formats, MET/TRACK allows you to manageyour equipment the way that works best for you. Newdesktop customization features enable you to person-alize the way data appears on the screen. And youcan create multiple desktops to display the sameinformation in different formats for multiple users andmultiple workstations. You can edit field names tomatch your organization’s terminology. Suppress orenable fields to include only the information thatmatters to you. And control the type and format ofinformation entered into key fields. Virtually any kindof measurement asset in your organization — electri-cal, mechanical or dimensional — can be managedwith MET/TRACK, even if it doesn’t require calibra-tion. And, whether the calibration interval is meas-ured in days, weeks, months, even use cycles, youcan count on MET/TRACK to keep you up to date.

Build your own tablesIn addition to a broad set of calibration, maintenance, and location records, MET/TRACK offers additionalfeatures so that you can store more custom informa-tion about your calibration assets.

Merge tables. Merge tables allow you to expand onthe data held by particular fields in MET/TRACKtables. For example, it may be necessary to knowmore about the manufacturer of an instrument. Thenormal manufacturer field can hold values like Fluke,Agilent or Tek, but if you need to hold specific contactinformation about these manufacturers, a “MergeTable” can provide the storage space you need. Youonly need to enter the data once, and the MergeTable will be linked to specific values of manufac-turer, no matter how many times that value occurs inthe table.

User auxiliary tables. If you need more than thestandard data fields provided and the field expansioncapability of Merge Tables to hold your required data, you can create your own tables within theMET/TRACK database and link the records to anyasset.

5500/CAL — Compact, portable automationfor on-site applicationsFor those who use Fluke oscilloscope and multiprod-uct calibrators, 5500/CAL provides nearly all theautomated calibration and test and measurementasset management capabilities of MET/CAL, in alower cost, portable version.
