Overview of Robotron’s MDM solution

Smart Metering implies measuring and managing energy use in an intelligent manner. This applies not only to billing-relevant consumption data but also to information about energy flows and the status of the energy network. Innovative metering systems offer secure channels for controlling individual components within intelligent energy networks (Smart Grid). Besides timely collection and analysis of meter data Smart Metering with robotron*esmart allows intelligent control of generation and consumption components. At this stage the universal head-end-system robotron*SwitchingServer ideally combines both aspects and perfectly integrates existing infrastructures.

Intelligent IT solutions complete the concept of Smart Metering. The MDM system robotron*esmart is the optimal solution for collecting and processing of any available mass data.

Data hub for Smart Metering and Smart Grid

HEAD-END SYSTEM –

The robotron*SwitchingServer takes the role of a database-supported, scalable and failsafe switching center or data hub for IP-based M2M data communication. Complete support of Web services, IP telemetry standards acc. to DIN 43863-4 as well as TAINY- SwitchingCenter protocols (TSC) guarantee an integration of the latest equipment technology. Therefore communication according to the requirements of the technical guideline of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI TR-03109) is ensured.

Load balancing and high avalability

The sharing of integrated devices and communication components (gates) to several communication nodes provides also a redundant operation in multi-node mode. The administration of all gates and nodes within one Oracle database allows for interoperability between all registered components.

The importance of robotron*SwitchingServer for Smart Meter Gateways

The robotron*SwitchingServer plays an important role regarding the orderly realization of particularly high safety demands of Smart Metering systems in Germany. In this context it serves as remote station to the secure communication channel acc. to BSI TR-03109 for Smart Meter Gateways (SMGW) and therefore provides a central M2M communication interface for efficient and secure data transfer and administration of SMGW.

Efficient data management including a fully automated collection and processing of consumption and power quality data plays also a key role especially in case of the following:

robotron*ecollect comprehensively meets these highly complex requirements. It allows automated meter data collection of C&I- as well as residential customers. The data collection of Smart Grid or Submetering components for managing energy efficiency is done the same way. Furthermore, administration and parameterization of all involved devices (meters, communication modules etc.) as well as the management of metering point topology is guaranteed.

Push, pull, and poll communication via modem connection (GSM, PSTN etc.), IP telemetry or TCP/IP connections (DSL, GPRS, UMTS etc.) as well as WebServices (SOAP, REST) are supported.

Monitoring with automated fault detection and subsequent meter reading reduce manual intervention to a minimum. System performance can be individually adjusted by scalable system components to allow a faster parallelized collection and processing of meter data. robotron*ecollect has already proven its mass data compatibility in several customer projects.

Collected meter data are directly imported into the energy data management of Robotron EDM/MDM solution robotron*esmart and therefore they are immediately available for the associated processes.

System structure and operation

A high level of efficiency and future sustainability is guaranteed through vendor-independent support of existing as well as future meter and communication infrastructure. robotron*ecollect supports all common meter types, load profile recorders, Smart Meter as well as data concentrators or head-end-systems with all communication protocols and data formats.

The portfolio of supported devices ranges from remote readable electricity or gas standard and interval meters to different volume meters and load profile recorders up to modern Smart Meter systems. In addition, Smart Grid components such as controllable loads, generation facilities, energy storages as well as charging infrastructure components for electric vehicles are collected and controlled.

Overall system performance as competitive advantage

In the context of a scalability test it was possible to demonstrate the mass data capability of an entire system. Meter data of 12 million meters each with 96 meter readings were collected and processed within less than 24 hours via free scalable integration of communication server.

At the same time corresponding work values (quarter-hourly difference of meter readings) were calculated and imported to the system. In total 24 million time series with altogether 2.3 billion meter readings and work values were processed.

ADVANCED METER READING –

The fast and progressive development of terminals and mobile devices also encourages EDM customers to look for new methods and ways to manage their business processes. Particular attention is given to the provision of EDM functionalities and the availability of information nearly in real time. With this perception Robotron has designed its web portal solution.

The robotron*Webportal meets with its modular character and the responsive design the latest requirements of the customers. It offers a big variety of combinable module configurations to map different processes for various target groups (e.g. tariff customers, external market participants, chain stores etc.). Beside the standard features such as consumption analysis, creation of operating figures, target monitoring and mapping of location or organizational structures also EDM processes can be selected and executed through the portal.
