- 5 -What happens when I eat?

Our bodies are made up of tiny building blocks called cells. These cells are alive so they need food. The food for my cells comes from what I eat. My cells need nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats, and water. All the food I eat contains some nutrients. Different foods have different nutrients and in different amounts. After chewing and swallowing, my stomach breaks down the food I eat into a liquid. As my food digests, the nutrients are absorbed. Once the nutrients

are chemically changed, the blood carries them to the cells. The cells use the nutrients for growth, repair and energy. Eating a variety of good foods helps provide the needed nutrients for my cells.

Overweight and Obesity

Overweight or Obese means a person has excess body weight. Some reasons include:

What are the risks of being overweight or obese? All of the body systems have to work harder. There is an increased risk for getting diabetes. There is an increased risk of developing heart and blood vessel disease. Sometimes overweight and obese people develop a poor self-image.

What is the best way to prevent being overweight or obese?

Eat a balanced, proper diet. (nutritionally balanced / not too many calories) Exercise on a regular basis. (daily if possible) Yearly physicals will help determine a healthy weight for you.

Remember – Lifetime nutritional habits are formed during childhood!

Reading Ingredients

Manufacturers must list the ingredients in a product by weight. It lists ingredients found most in that product to those found least.Below are two common ingredients you should avoid. They are contained in many processed foods.

1.) High fructose corn syrup is a cheaper way to sweeten food. It

doesn’t let your stomach know that you’re full. It is used in many foods including Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup.

INGREDIENTS: HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP; CORN SYRUP; WATER; SUGAR; COCOA; CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE; POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVATIVE); SALT; MONO-AND DIGLYCERIDES; POLYSORBATE 60; XANTHAN GUM; ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR; BIOTIN; CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE; VITAMIN E ACETATE; AND ZINC SULFATE

2.) Partially hydrogenated oils are used to increase the shelf life of foods. They can contribute to clogged arteries and heart disease. It lowers the good kind of cholesterol (HDL). Partially hydrogenated oils are found in many foods including Betty Crocker Creamy Chocolate Cake Frosting.

Sugar comes in different forms. Some sugars include glucose, maltose, sucrose, fructose and dextrose.

The purpose of the Digestive System is to change food

into a form that can be used by the cells of the body.The Digestive System includes five main body parts:

- mouth - esophagus - stomach - small intestine - large intestine

1.) Digestion begins in the mouth. Here, the teeth tear and chew the food. Saliva softens the food making it easier to chew and swallow. The tongue helps push the food down the throat to the esophagus.

2.) The esophagus is a muscular tube that squeezes food down to the stomach.

3.) The strong walls of the stomach squeeze to mix the food with digestive juices. After a few hours, the chunks of food turn into a thick liquid called chyme.

4.) Every few minutes, the stomach lets out small amounts of chyme into the small intestine. Digestion is completed here. The parts of the food that the body can use move into the bloodstream through finger-like structures that line the small intestine called villi.

5.) The part of food that the body cannot use is called waste. Waste is stored at the end of the large intestine. It passes out of the body when you use the bathroom.
