1 SCOPE
This method statement describes the step by step procedure for installing Sika®Drain-850 Geo
2 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Sika®Drain-850 Geo is a heavy duty drainage and protection sheet produced from high density polyethylene
(HDPE) with dimples 10 mm high and a filtration layer of polypropylene (PP) geotextile bonded on the top.
2.1 USES
As a protection and drainage sheet for preformed sheet membrane waterproofing systems, liquid applied
membranes and with the Sika® White Box concept for waterproofing retaining walls and heavy duty
roofs/podiums.
2.2 CHARACTERISTICS / ADVANTAGES
High drainage capacity
High mechanical/impact resistance
Integral filtration layer
Resistant to all natural aggressive mediums in ground water and soil
Suitable for contact with soft water (aggressive to concrete)
Can be installed on damp and wet substrates
Sika®Drain-850 Geo forms a drainage channel in the space between structural elements and
backfill/soil/substrate to allow water to be drained away and, when linked to a maintainable land drain,
will prevent hydrostatic pressure acting against the structure

2.4 LIMITATIONS
Sika®Drain-850 Geo is not resistant against exposure to permanent weathering and UV-light. When used in combination with PVC membranes, a separation (geotextile) must be used between the materials. Maximum installation depth: 10m.
3 PRODUCT INFORMATION

4 INSTALLATION
4.1 GENERAL
If the installation depth is less than 2.44m (height of the rolls), the Sika®Drain-850 Geo may be rolled out
horizontally along the wall and fastened on the top. This method reduces the number of vertical laps required.
If the installation depth is greater than 2.44m (height of the rolls), the Sika®Drain-850 Geo may be rolled out
starting from the top to the bottom.
4.2 LAPPING
Adjacent sheets should overlap by a minimum of 60mm.
4.2.1 LAP AT EDGE OF ROLL (FLAT EDGE) The edges of each roll have a flat area with loose geotextile. One side is 60mm wide; the other is 45mm wide.
The lap is created by:
Wider 60mm Flat Edge
Narrower 45mm Flat Edge
1. Fold back the loose fleece on the wider (60mm) flat edge
2. Add a strip of double-sided tape (e.g. SikaProof FixTape-50) along the flat section
3. Lap the narrower flat edge onto the tape and press firmly
4. Double-sided tape, or similar, may be required to hold the loose fleece in place
5. Fold the loose fleece over and press firmly

4.2.2 LAP ON A CUT EDGE (NO FLAT EDGE) If you need to create a lap on the edge of a roll that has been cut, there will be no flat edge to connect to, in which
case the recommended solution is as follows.
Note: Single-sided tapes can be used for sealing the laps as an alternative to the process above using double-sided
tape. Sika CD corner seal tape (115330) or Sika CD plaster tape (115331) single sided tapes can close the geotextile
at the laps.

4.4 FIXING
The product can be fixed along the top edge (above the waterproofing membrane) and
draped down the concrete face. Fix along the top with a nail and washer system every
250mm to prevent sagging or pulling at the nails.
Strips of double-sided butyl tape (such as SikaProof FixTape-50) can be used if
additional fixings are required across the main area of the sheet.
Do not nail through the main area of the sheet if placed against a waterproofing
membrane.
Sheets may also be temporarily propped to provide support whilst backfill is placed,
with props removed once backfill is deep enough to provide support.
Single-sided tape or a separate piece of geotextile should be used to close the top
termination edge to prevent material entry.
4.5 CORNERS AND EDGES
Care should be taken when forming Sika®Drain-850 Geo around sharp corners or edges to prevent the flow
channel becoming blocked.
For external corners, the geotextile may need to be cut and a tape applied to seal the geotextile once the sheet
has been folded. For internal folds no special treatment is required.
4.6 DRAINAGE PIPE
To continue the geotextile around the drainage pipe, peel back sufficient geotextile from the sheet and form over
the drainage pipe. Any excess dimple sheet can be cut back as required.
It is recommended to cover the pipe with crushed stones before covering with the geotextile. See the picture
about a typical installation.
