Methodist College has awardedacademic scholarships to 15 incoming freshman for the 1980-81academic year, according to GeorgeThomas Dent, Director of Admissions at Methodist.
Cheryl L. Epperson of Hubert, N.C.received the prestigious PresidentialScholarship for complete remissionof tuition and expenses for herfreshman year based on her performance on stringent CLEP examinations and a series of panel interviews.A graduate of Swansboro HighSchool, Ms. Epperson is the daughterof the Reverend and Mrs. James S.Epperson of Hubert.
The Mary Gene Blackburn Scholarship, awarded by the North CarolinaConference in memory of the wife ofBishop Robert Blackburn, has beenawarded to Norma G. Walters ofRougemont, N.C. Ms. Walters is thedaughter of Mr. and Mrs. JamesWalters and a graduate of PersonSenior High School in Roxboro.

Dr. Sam Ragan, editor andpublisher of THE SOUTHERN PINESPILOT, spoke to a graduating class of96 during Commencement Exercisesat Methodist College on Sunday,May 4, in Reeves Auditorium.
Ragan called for an affirmation ofthe American system and theAmerican people.
"It seems to me that the Americansystem, the American people havebeen subjected to some heavy dosesof criticism in recent years, a criticismadversely affecting the Americanspirit. Now is the time for affirmation-- an affirmation of America and thehuman spirit."
"Go into the world with wonder,because there is still much to wonderabout, and there are still people whobelieve there are truths which are selfevident, and that life, liberty, and thepursuit of happiness are rights for allto enjoy."
In other special presentations during the exercises, Dr. Ragan waspresented an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Methodist Collegefor his contributions to the professionof journalism and for his unfailingsupport of the arts in North Carolina.
The Honorable Beth Finch, mayorof Fayetteville, was awarded theprestigious Methodist CollegeMedallion for outstanding achievement in local government and continued commitment to civic affairs.Mayor Finch is the third recipient ofthe Methodist College Medallion inthe history of the college.

Blackburn, an assistant professor of military science, is agraduate of the University of NorthCarolinast Chapel Hill and holdsan M.S. degree from Southern Ulinols University.

Small Talk Wins AgainFor the fifth consecutive semester,
the Methodist College studentnewspaper Small Talk has won theFirst Class Honors Rating from theAssociated Collegiate Press.
Mary Skar, national judge forAssociated Collegiate Press, calledSmall Talk "a trendsetter in collegiatepapers."
"Small Talk" is a lively publicationreflecting a realistic picture of theenergy and enthusiasmof a smallcollege campus," says Ms. Skar.
