Metho:dist Graduates Hear Sam Ragan At May Commencement Exercises Methodist College Announces 1980-81 Scholarship Recipients Mayl980 arts in Fayetteville. Graduating senior Jeffrey Paul Cavano received the Lucius Stacy Weaver Award for excellence in academics, activities, character and leadership. He is the son of Dr. Ar- thur Cavano and Dr. Janet Cavano of Fayetteville. School in Oxon Hill. Donna DeWayne Gore of Nakina, N.C. has been chosen to receive the Culbreth Scholarship. A graduate of Nakina High School, Ms. Gore is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks Gore. James F. Vasquez of Fayetteville is the recipient of the Holt-Williamson Scholarship and the Mildred C. Dunn Scholarship. He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. H.T. Vasquez and a graduate of E.E. Smith High School. Carol Denise Jones of Wilmington, N.C. has been awarded the C.G. Mc- Carver Scholarship, the Culbreth Scholarship and the Mildred C. Dunn Scholarship. She is the daughter of Mrs. Christine J. Jones and a graduate of New Hanover High School. Cynthia Lorraine Peterson of Fayetteville will receive the W.R. Smith Scholarship and the Tom McLean Scholarship. A graduate of Westover High School, Ms. Peterson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie R. Peterson. Sheila Dawn Yates of Fayetteville has been named recipient of the Alex Bethune Scholarship and the P. L. Browning Scholarship. Ms. Yates is a graduate of Pine Forest Senior High and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary D. Yates. Fayetteville, N'. C. Methodist College Vol. 21 No.3 Methodist College has awarded academic scholarships to 15 incom- ing freshman for the 1980-81 academic year, according to George Thomas Dent, Director of Admis- sions at Methodist. Cheryl L. Epperson of Hubert, N.C. received the prestigious Presidential Scholarship for complete remission of tuition and expenses for her freshman year based on her perfor- mance on stringent CLEP examina- tions and a series of panel interviews. A graduate of Swansboro High School, Ms. Epperson is the daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. James S. Epperson of Hubert. The Mary Gene Blackburn Scholar- ship, awarded by the North Carolina Conference in memory of the wife of Bishop Robert Blackburn, has been awarded to Norma G. Walters of Rougemont, N.C. Ms. Walters is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Walters and a graduate of Person Senior High School in Roxboro. Raymond C. Mann o~ Oxon Hill Maryland has been awarded three scholarships for his freshman year at Methodist - the W. E. Horner Scholarship, the Durwood Johnson Murray Scholarship, and the Alan Brantley Scholarship. Mann is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Lee Mann and a graduate of Friendly High Presidential Medallion to be worn by the college president at official col- lege ceremonies' and presented the first Presidential Medallion to the cur- rent president Dr. Richard W. Pearce, praising his enthusiasm and energy in creating an academically strong, financially strong college of liberal Cindy Gilliam, 1980 graduate, receives wishes of congratulation from Mayor Beth Finch of Fayetteville during Commencement Exercises. Dr. Sam Ragan, editor and publisher of THE SOUTHERN PINES PILOT, spoke to a graduating class of 96 during Commencement Exercises at Methodist College on Sunday, May 4, in Reeves Auditorium. Ragan called for an affirmation of the American system and the American people. "It seems to me that the American system, the American people have been subjected to some heavy doses of criticism in recent years, a criticism adversely affecting the American spirit. Now is the time for affirmation -- an affirmation of America and the human spirit." "Go into the world with wonder, because there is still much to wonder about, and there are still people who believe there are truths which are self evident, and that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are rights for all to enjoy." In other special presentations dur- ing the exercises, Dr. Ragan was presented an honorary Doctor of Let- ters degree from Methodist College for his contributions to the profession of journalism and for his unfailing support of the arts in North Carolina. The Honorable Beth Finch, mayor of Fayetteville, was awarded the prestigious Methodist College Medallion for outstanding achieve- ment in local government and con- tinued commitment to civic affairs. Small Talk Wins AgainFor the fifth consecutive semester,

the Methodist College studentnewspaper Small Talk has won theFirst Class Honors Rating from theAssociated Collegiate Press.

Mary Skar, national judge forAssociated Collegiate Press, calledSmall Talk "a trendsetter in collegiatepapers."

"Small Talk" is a lively publicationreflecting a realistic picture of theenergy and enthusiasmof a smallcol­lege campus," says Ms. Skar.

Ms. Hoy is a junior majoring inbusiness administration at MethodistCollege. She was chosen as thedeserving student in North Carolinawhose primary field of study is relatedto real estate or real estate financingand a comprehensive background ingeneral business.
