The aim of this brief was to Make and Break a Grid and think of a rational as to why I did it. I wanted to make something that you could actually touch as opposed to something on the computer, so I made a grid out of brads and cotton on a piece of card, then cut the cotton to “break” the grid, this is shown on the opposite page. My idea was to make a video of facts about Gillian Wearing. I decided to take photos of strangers I saw around holding, signs with the facts that wanted to include about Gillian Wearing in my video. I did this because one of her most well known projects was a series of photos of strangers holding signs with whatever they wanted to write on them. PersuasionThis brief was to change peoples behavior around the University in anywayyouwanted.Wefirsthadapracticeroundandwedecidedto put ‘Out of Order’ signs on one of the toilets and record peoples reactions. We then did the real thing and we decided to print out some fake money and leave it around the University and record whether it changed peoples behavior and most importantly whether or not they picked it up.

Shooting StarsThis brief was to pick one out of a selection of recent news stories and changed it in someway. I decided to look at the ‘Chilean Miners’ story and I wanted to change it to make them the enemy instead of the heros which is what they’ve come to be seen as in the media. I decided to create a selection of newspaper front covers to tell the story. The opposite page is thefirstoneandonthetwofollowingpagesaretheothers.

THE THIRTY THREE Chilean Miners have been found hidden in the San Jose Gold and Copper miner near the City of Copiapo, 500 miles north of Santiago. They are around 2,500 ft deep and refusing to come back up. Police and other forces are searing for ways to enter but its taking longer than expected. It is thought they have taken enough food and water to last them almost a year and have created a home for themselves in there with T.Vs, a bar and an area for football games. CONTINUED PAGE 6.

THE THIRTY THREE Chilean Miners will today be captured after 69 days on the run. The miners have been hiding in the San Jose Gold and Copper miner near the City of Copiapo, 500 miles north of Santiago and have blocked all entrances and exits and created a living space for themselves. Police have been trying to negotiate with them through letters but the miners are refusing to surrender so police have no option but to invade. They are usign a new pully sytem, designed especially for this, which drills through into the mine and will take police officers in to make the arrests. CONTINUED PAGE 9

Ways to Tell a StoryThe aim of this brief was to retell a story we were given in different ways. The original story that was given to us is above.
BelowisthefirstideaIhadofchangingthestory.Idecidedtoshowitfromthe perspective of the person upstairs. I tried to do it in a similar drawing style to the original.
AbovearetwoofthewaysinwhichIchangethestory.Thefirstwastochange around the sequence of the frames. The second was to take out the backgrounds in the frames so as to leave it up to the viewer to use their imagination.

These are two of my other ideas for retelling making a cup of tea. Above is a diagram/map showing cold to warm directions of going from my room to the kitchen. To the right is my other idea which was to retell it using different fonts and adjectives to describe the process.

Evaluation:-
Throughout this semester I feel as though I have learnt a lot both in ways of thinking and also new technical skills.
All of the briefs have shown me different ways of approaching projects and I have learnt it’s good to show your work to other people because you will always get a different view and be shown ways to improve your work. This is why I quite enjoyed the small group crits halfway through each project because it was a really good chance to get response.
My favourite brief of the semester was ‘Ways to Tell a Story’ I loved having to think outside of the box and look at the story from other peoples points of view so I could create something new and exciting. When we were told to recreate our own mundane event I chose to retell makingacupofteaandthisiswhereIdecidedtogive‘AdobeFlash’atryforthefirsttime.Ireally enjoyed it even though it took me so long to get used to, once I had created something andcouldwatchitbackIreallyfeltasthoughIhadaccomplishedsomething.IamdefinitelygoingtocontinueusingflashjustpractisingsoIcanimprovemyskills.
The brief I could really get along with or work out something I wanted to do was the ‘Biography’ brief. For this I chose Gillian Wearing to look at. Although a lot of people would see her work asveryinterestinganddifferentIjustdidn’tfindanythingthatinspiredme,althoughIdidenjoy researching her work which made me realise it’s important for me to research into other artists work even if they aren’t my style.
Overall I feel this semester has been very inspiring for me I have enjoyed most of it and I am looking forward to the next semester and some new projects.
