WELL DONE METHWOLDSPORTS TEAM - THIRD IN THE INTER-VILLAGE GAMES

On a stormy day in June, which resulted in the outside events being cancelled,Methwold performed brilliantly and represented the village in the most sportingway possible. The stars of the day were the boys football team and archery, bothof whom won their particular events. A special well done to Charles whose shoot-ing in archery was spectacular and notched up the best score of the day with 108out of 120. The team would like to thank Sarah Ramsay for organising the eventand keeping this tradition going in a difficult year.

RECYCLING

I recently had the opportunity to visit the council run Materials Recovery Facility

First the GOOD NEWS: Recycling is not just for the hair shirt and home made shoesbrigade. The modern, computer controlled operation at Costessey employs eightylocal people and makes a profit for the local councils. This profit may be spent in thelocal economy or saved to keep council tax rises smaller than they might otherwise be.

There is also some NOT SO GOOD NEWS: There are only three remaining opera-tional landfill sites in Norfolk and we are running out of space.Unfortunately many householders (me included) have not fully grasped the way thesystem works.

Materials for recycling should not be bagged as separate categories but placed in thebins loose to be pre sorted at Costessey. ElfinHealth and safety does not permit theworkers to open bags other than those specially provided to those houses where greenbins are not appropriate. (Thankyou for the thought but all that extra effort was to noavail) Tins and plastic bottles should NOT be flattened. One of the sorting machinesdistinguishes flat objects from three dimensional ones, and this part of the systemmoves the 2D paper and card to separate parts of the facility from the 3D cans & bot-tles to the correct part of the unit. Ideally, bottle tops should be removed and placed inthe ordinary rubbish, although it may be that local schools/nurseries could use them inlessons as counters etc.

Most households are doing their bit to conserve finite resources and protect the envi-ronment. The parish council is looking into the possibility of running a limited opera-tion whereby recycling credits would accrue directly to the Parish of Methwold, so itwould be in everyone's interest to increase our efforts. I hope the following lists willhelp clarify matters.

OPEN FORUMLetters from residents of Brookville were presented asking that the current 40mphspeed limit be extended along the north west of the B1112 through Brookville toencompass the two properties at True Hill and the north end of Brook Lane. Thisrequest will be passed to Highways. It was noted the ‘No Cycling’ signs along the cemetery path at the entrance toGlobe Street are obliterated and are in need of replacing. Cyclists have been tear-ing through the gap and the Open Spaces Working Party was tasked with re-searching the cost of regravelling this part of the path to deter cyclists.Concern was raised regarding the deteriorating condition of buildings at PetchCorner. The Borough Council has been made aware of this previously but Build-ing Control will be informed again that walls are crumbling onto the footpath. The question of whether any proposed new play equipment at the RecreationGround should be fenced was raised and it was stated that this matter is still underconsideration. A public meeting is to be held on July 23rd at 7pm in the FentonRoom to discuss the proposals for new play equipment.

1. Apologies for Absence: Mrs B Bluck, Mrs M Wortley.Mr M Peake – Borough CouncillorIt was noted Mrs M Truss has resigned as a member of Methwold Parish Coun-

It was agreed any clarification which might be included by the Clerkshould in future be identified in some manner.

5. Reports:5.1 Chairman’s Report:

The Chairman has attended meetings of the Working Parties and the ParishCouncil Finance Committee. He has also met with the caretaker of the Vil-lage Hall and discussion has taken place regarding the need to replace flash-ing on the roof of the boiler room at the Hall. The Chairman has also approached the electrician who fitted the Frost Statregarding checking that the Frost Stat is working correctly. The hand railings at the back door of the Hall need some maintenance work.

5.2 Clerk’s Report:• Documents relating to the Wayleave agreement for the sub-station adja-

cent to St. George’s Churchyard have been returned to the solicitor actingfor the electrical company and a response is awaited.• A further letter has been received from the owners of No. 57 GlobeStreet regarding a hard access across Lower Green; the contents of whichwas made known to the Council. The advice from solicitor Nicholas Han-cox was that a new right of way across Lower green should be paid for andif any slabs were to be laid they should be laid professionally, to make surethey would be safe and a legal agreement would be needed. The owners ofNo. 57 have stated that they do not wish to progress the project and thus theParish Council resolved by six votes in favour (three abstentions) not to dis-cuss this matter further. The Clerk is reviewing risk assessment procedures and documentation. Thegeneric risk assessment supplied by NALC has been adapted and risk as-sessment for the Village Hall will be updated. It was noted an annual fireextinguisher check is undertaken by Ashill Fire Protection Ltd which is nowdue and the annual play equipment inspection which is contracted throughthe Borough Council should be undertaken in August. The Clerk is booked to attend a course entitled ‘Grave Matters’. The ParishCouncil will be asked to pay one third of the £25.00 fee for the course. The Clerk has met with Highway Engineer Andy Wallace and has passed onconcerns raised at previous Council meetings. Mr. Wallace has said that‘trods’ are not sprayed with weed killer by the Highway department as theyare not official footways. The Highway Inspector is due to inspect the Meth-wold area and pot holes should be noted during his inspection. The High-way Rangers should be in the village the week commencing August 6th.The pest controller formally used by the Parish Council has been asked toprovide a quote to eradicate moles from the Cemetery. The Clerk has madecontact with a ferret handler who would be willing to use ferrets to cull rab-bits in the Cemetery in the autumn.

contact with a ferret handler who would be willing to use ferrets to cull rab-bits in the Cemetery in the autumn. Communication has been received from the Borough Council of King’sLynn and West Norfolk regarding changes to the refuse collection. Market-ing & development Manager, Hayley Kurt, has offered to visit a ParishCouncil meeting to explain changes. She will be asked why there is a needto visit the parish as this would involve funding which it was thought couldbe put to better use.

5.3 The Report from the Hall and General Working Party meeting held onJune 18th was considered and accepted as part of the minutes of the Parish Coun-cil meeting. The report is attached as appendix A.

Some discussion took place regarding the possible subsidence of the FentonRoom extension. The gauges attached to the walls of the Fenton Room tomonitor possible movement have shown no indication of a problem but it isfelt cracks on the internal wall of the ladies toilet may be getting wider. TheParish Council is to seek quotes for a test pit to be dug in the car park at theend of the Fenton Room to investigate whether there is a problem with thedrains. This matter will be an agenda item for the August meeting of theParish Council.Other matters as listed in the Working Party Report were considered andwill be acted on as noted.

5.4 The Report from the Open Spaces Working Party meeting held on June28th 2012 was considered and accepted as part of the minutes of the Parish Coun-cil meeting. The report is attached as appendix B.

Mr C Stone expanded on points raised at the Working Party meeting. It ishoped any new play equipment provided at the Recreation Ground could bemaintained through money raised from recycling banks which could be pro-vided in the village. The meeting was briefly suspended to allow a memberof the public to contribute. The Parish Council was informed that the Bor-ough Council provide the bottle bank by the entrance to Methwold SocialClub. It had been thought the Social Club received income from the bank butthis is not so and further investigation will be undertaken regarding this mat-ter.The WREN grant application to provide further play equipment at the Recre-ation Ground is progressing well.Regarding use of the Recreation Ground by Methwold United for the2012/13 season it was agreed by all to charge £1 per Home Team memberper match (£11). The Club will be contracted to a) level and re-seed the usedgoal areas, b) ensure that a thorough litter sweep is conducted after everyhome match and c) if the Club wishes to change the position of the pitch theexact new position of the pitch must be agreed with the Council and theClub is to be responsible for moving and re-setting the goal posts which

If you are thinking of having a baptism or wedding at the church then please con-tact Revd Ken Waters on 01366-727220.

In our Holy Communion services we lay a table for a meal. It’s a funny kind of ameal. A tiny piece of bread, a small sip of juice. A funny, tiny, almost insignifi-cant kind of a meal. In the early church, they gathered for much larger meals, infact they were banquets! People fought for the chance to get to the early seating,so that they could be sure to fill their stomachs. Then, at a certain point in ourhistory, someone decided that those meals, rather than pointing towards God,were actually turning the people’s focus in the wrong direction. And so the cus-tom of bread and the fruit of the vine, a small meal, a symbolic meal, yet one sofull of relationship it might as well be a feast… was born. A meal that is simulta-neously so much less than a meal (as defined by our super-sized appetites), andyet so much more than a meal (as defined by the love of the one who serves it tous). But you know, the fact is that Jesus doesn’t want to give us just bread. Heactually wants to be our bread. The bread of life.

God Bless,

Joke Spot: A young woman teacher explains to her class of small children thatshe is an atheist. She asks her class if they are atheists too. Not really knowingwhat atheism is, but wanting to be like their teacher, their hands explode into theair like fleshy fireworks. There is, however, one exception. Little Johnny has notgone along with the crowd. The teacher asks him why he’s decided to be differ-ent. "Because I'm not an atheist." "Then," asks the teacher, "What are you?""I'm a Christian." The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. Sheasks Little Johnny why he’s a Christian. "Well, I was brought up knowing and lov-ing Jesus. My mom is a Christian, and my dad is a Christian, so I’m a Chris-tian." The teacher is now angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What ifyour mom was an idiot, and your dad was a moron. What would you be then?""Then," Little Johnny says with a smile, "I'd be an atheist!"

PENNY JAR APPEAL FOR NEW CHAIRS This isn’t going very well as Istill have loads of empty jars, which are awfully upset because nobody wants totake them home to fill them up. Can you help an empty jar? Stop me and ask fora Jar when you see me. This time we’re hoping to raise enough money to replacethe old wooden stacking chairs that we use when we have the church full for wed-dings, funerals, Christingle, etc. Once you’ve filled a jar please drop them off atchurch or around my house and hopefully you’ll take an empty one to start again. We’re hoping to raise £1,500. Thanks.

Hospital Happenings Sept 2012Monthly Ramblings about West Suffolk Hospital

“It’s a Knockout” Bury style Update!

“It’s a Bury Knockout” on the 22nd July was quite a success with over £10,000being raised for charity and a lot of fun being had by all. Needless to say theobligatory embarrassing pictures were posted on Facebook shortly after the eventwith staff from all areas well represented including several consultants and atleast one senior manager. Demonstrations of kick boxing were particularly popular especially as the audi-ence was invited to join in. The weather held good for the event which was wellattended.Half of the proceeds will be used to upgrade cancer diagnostic equipment at thehospital, with the remainder going to Sport for Rwanda.

Major Trauma in Norfolk and Suffolk : From August 14th Suffolk and Norfolk becomes part of the East of EnglandTrauma Network. The West Suffolk Hospital will be designated a Trauma Unit (one of 14 in the net-work) and Addenbrooke’s is the Major Trauma Centre (MTC).

West Suffolk Hospital we will have support from the MTC and Trauma NetworkCo-ordination desk (TNC) which will result in prompt co-ordinated acute, urgentand rehabilitation management of the severely injured.

Case of the Month:We do quite a few micturating cystograms for patients with kidney problems.Micturition means passing urine and a cystogram is imaging of the bladder. Theseare done to see if urine tracks back up the tubes, the ureters, to the kidneys, poten-tially causing infection and kidney damage.

They are done by giving the patient an injection of radioactive tracer that fills thebladder, and then they pass urine while the camera takes pictures. It’s all done inthe best possible taste with screens round the patient while the radio is turned upto drown any embarrassing sounds. Normal and cine images are taken and can beplotted as a graph to show any back-tracking or reflux. These scans are usuallyboringly ( or reassuringly, depending on your point of view, ) negative.

Just recently we had a young chap of 5 years old who proudly told us he couldpee in the bottle. We impressed upon him ( and his Mum! ) the need for good aimas any radioactive pee on the floor or equipment renders it out of action for a day

in a chirpy voice from behind the screens so we had a look at the images. To oursurprise the scan was very positive with a clear reflux along one ureter back uptowards the kidney. This also showed on the graphs and the pictures. The cinewas particularly impressive. This meant the little valve at the bottom of the ureterhad probably failed and he would need an operation to correct it to avoid damageto the kidney in future. Our little patient didn’t care about anything other than thefact that he’d pee’d in the bottle without spilling a drop and marched out of theroom as proud as punch!

METHWOLD RECREATION GROUND PLAY AREASUMMARY SHEET

Many thanks to everyone who filled in a playground survey form. I thought youwould like to see the summary of results that has been prepared for the “Wren ap-plication”. Chris Stone

THE LOCAL BACKGROUND: The results of this survey should be seen in re-lation to OCSI statistics on the village produced as part of the Rural EvidenceProject in Jan 2012 :

* There are 600 households in the village (2001). As there has been somebuilding since this time the % of respondents in the survey has been reducedaccordingly.* There are 184 households with dependent children.* There were 345 children under 16 in 2010.* There are 20 single parent families.* There are more young people coming into the village than moving out so

the number of children may rise. * There are 60 families with no cars. This is below the national average butin a rural area with few amenities it is, nevertheless, significant both interms of the elderly and young. * Children in out of work families is only just below the national average.

THE SURVEY: 100 adults (representing approx 15% of the households in the vil-lage) took part in the survey- together with 22 children aged 5-6, 48 childrenaged 6-10 and 47 young people aged 12-16.METHODOLOGY: – “Adult” survey forms were issued to every householdthrough “Methwold Times” and promoted at the village’s Diamond Jubilee cele-brations where many were filled in. The survey asked for one reply per householdunless members of the household had differing views. A different form was usedfor primary age pupils and the youngest pupils were interviewed.

There is general agreement across all sections that the present playgroundhas been well used but is now tired, unexciting and in need of upgrading. This is considered particularly true of the provision for younger children.A large number of children are taken elsewhere to play because other vil-lages have “better” provision. These children would certainly use an up-graded playground in Methwold. The “meeting area”, skateboard ramp and zip-wire are still valued and needto be kept. For younger children the same can be said for the swings, climb-ing frame and see-saw. What all age-groups want is a greater variety ofmore exciting and challenging equipment.Specifically – a climbing structure, spinner, basket swing/swings, slide andgoal area/basketball net were the most popular choices for new equipment

Page 20: Methwold Times times/mt1209.pdf · 8th December Social Club Xmas Bingo Social Club 6.30pm This is your publication so why not let us know what you think. Written contributions to

…. And this has been taken into consideration when working out the speci-fication given to potential contractors/providers. (Copy attached). If there isany flexibility in the budget (for example if a fence is deemed unnecessary)then a fitness trail would be a very popular addition. The survey found that there were few gender differences in the replies (ex-cept in the need for a goal area) but the Council would like to interviewolder High School girls at the beginning of the new term in September tomake sure that their needs have been catered for.A large majority of adults wish the playground to be fenced (70%). It islikely however, that many are unaware of new evidence concerning “trapareas” and bullying as well as the cost involved. More discussion is neededon this subject while at the same time exploring the need for a “Friends OfThe Playground Group”.Both children and adults wish to see more seats, tables and litter bins in thearea.Disabled access to the Recreation Ground needs to be improved regardlessas to whether or not there is a new playground. (The Parish Council areconsidering this and are asking for any disabled persons using the area tocome forward and help them with these arrangements).Safety issues raised include – dogs, litter and broken glass. (Both the ParishCouncil and a community group are addressing these problems as a matterof urgency).

We have received exciting news that Pets at Home are going to support us for thecoming year. There is a bin there for donated food and they will fundraise for usthroughout the year. Look out for our table, hopefully once a month on a Satur-day, just inside the store, where forms will be available to request help with neu-tering.

Our Summer Fayre was well supported and we raised over £500 on the day andfound homes for 3 kittens but sadly no adults. Our next date for St CuthbertsChurch Hall, Thetford, is 6th October but we hope to have stalls at the RiversideKiosk on various Saturdays if it is dry!!

We still have Jessie and Buster so let’s try Bruno and Keira. They are a lovely, affectionate pair of cats who have been in our pen too long. Both are vaccinated, micro chipped and neutered and so deserve to have a loving home.

Help is needed for fundraising, selling items on ebay, indoor fostering, home vis-iting and collecting donated bric a brac. Car driver, computer owner would beuseful. If you feel you can help us even for 1 hour a week please ring the number

WHAT DOES THE DOCTOR THINK THIS MONTH?

THE CRUISE LINE: Deannie now has another title to add to “Management”and “Head Office” and I shall tell you more later. We were due to board the shipat Rosyth, on the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, on a Saturday in July. We set offon the Thursday to take a couple of days over the trip, perhaps stopping in theLake District on the way. All the way, the weather was appalling. I used to saythat the rain was pi**ing down (clue: think urinary outflow) but Management al-ways objected to the phrase and I am most grateful to my good friend of 35 years,Ken Griffen, for supplying an acceptable alternative. He is inherently more politethan I am and talks of the rain “persisting” down, a phrase acceptable to both ourmanagements. This is how the English language evolves, folks. To continue, weset off north, discovered from a roadside tea vendor that the A17 has been de-trunked (ie. is not a trunk road anymore so they can dig it up during the day timeand cause vast queues) and eventually hit the A1 and arrived at Scotch Corner. The rain was persisting down with great enthusiasm and we began to find roadsblocked by flooding, with dire weather warnings about how the conditions weregoing to deteriorate the next day. We took the decision to travel all the way toRosyth that day – it would have been embarrassing to miss the ship.

We now have our eighth Renault Grand Espace and a nervous break-down on the cards as they have stopped making them! Earlier this year, I bought aused version, six months old and a great deal less expensive than an unavailablenew one. By chance, this is a top of the range model and it has an amazing built-in TomTom navigation device. This Tom Tom talks to some master Tom Tom inthe sky and it knows about traffic jams and queues ahead, offering an alternativeroute to avoid the problem. It really worked overtime between Carlisle and Edin-burgh and we enjoyed some really rural and scenic routes around flooding andblockages on the M74 and M8. Also, if you need local knowledge, such as thewhereabouts of the nearest supermarket or petrol station, it will tell you!

We spent all Friday morning touring the Royal Yacht, “Britannia”, whichis moored in Edinburgh (Leith). She is a beautiful vessel, fascinating to visit. Ihesitate to discuss the politics of the situation but I left with a great feeling of sad-ness that such a magnificent ship was no longer representing our country aroundthe world and was now denied to our Queen, for whom it was the only placewhere she could relax completely. In the afternoon, following John Markham'smaxim that “time spent on reconnaissance is never wasted”, I went to have a lookat Rosyth. As a Cruise Terminal, it is, shall we say, basic and under construction. The ship moors a long way from the terminal, out in the open (no covered walk-ways) and a good way from the luggage drop and check-in areas. My main opin-ion was that, if the rain continued to persist, there would be wet people inabundance.

Saturday morning came and the persistence was horrendous, accompa-nied by really strong winds. We got wet and, as we hitched a lift to the ship, the

Saturday morning came and the persistence was horrendous, accompa-nied by really strong winds. We got wet and, as we hitched a lift to the ship, thebus driver said “I hope you're a better doc than the last one – they've got a bodyon board”. Sure enough, in the next room to our cabin lay a poor chap who haddied the night before. Problems occurred and I had to deal with the undertakers, the police and the Procurator Fiscal's office to secure his removal before wesailed.

The cruise to Norway was quite busy from my point of view, with quitea lot of night work. One poor man developed serious heart failure and was foundon deck at 5.30am. I put him in our Intensive Care Unit and worked on him untilwe docked at 9am and were able to send him to the hospital an hour away. He im-proved during the morning and, at noon, we started to have telephone calls tellingus that he was discharging himself from hospital against their strong medical ad-vice and would be retuning to the ship! He was told in no uncertain terms by me,the nursing sister, the captain, the patient's 90 year old partner and the port agentthat this was extremely dangerous from his point of view and that he would notbe readmitted to the ship. Sure enough, half an hour before we were due to sail,he appeared in a taxi and bounced off security at the bottom of the gangway.Guess who had to go down and “sort him out”. After a long chat, I persuaded himthat, in the interests of his survival, he should go back to hospital. He agreed andsat in his taxi watching the ship leave port. Deannie comforted his partner, a gameold thing, who was in floods of tears but unable to join him as they were not mar-ried and the insurance company would not allow it.

We had various other medical crises and amusing incidents and I may re-visit these in the future.

What, dear reader? You want to know about Deannie's new title – Inearly forgot. Those of you who have cruised will know that the company pro-vides tours from the ship at each place visited. Deannie was asked to be the“Hostess” one one of these tours. The instructions were straightforward : “Here'syour first aid kit and wooden lollipop with a tour number painted on it. If anyonehas an accident and has to come back to the ship – arrange a taxi and get a re-ceipt. Above all, don't lose anybody or leave them behind” The sight of her walk-ing along the quay, lollipop aloft , followed by a queue of passengers, will livewith me for some time. Hence, the new title “Tour Hostess” or “Lollipop”. Whatdo you think? Best wishes,

RECREATION GROUND PLAY AREAONE OUTSTANDING ISSUE

By the time you read this the “Wren” Application for a grant will have gone inand our fate will be as good as sealed. There is one issue, however, that remainsproblematic – whether or not to fence off an area for under 8s. The meeting withLucinda Leonard from the Norfolk Community Council in July was unfortunatelyvery poorly attended and those that were there expressed heartfelt but differentviews. Having voted for a fence in the survey, and having listened to the argu-ments being put forward by Lucinda , my views are now not at all certain on thismatter. The arguments against a fence are :

The cost is very high and the money would be better spent on play equip-ment : Estimates for a wooden fence have ranged from £5000 to £10,000.The maintenance of a fence is constant and expensive. One local village putin a fence in at the request of parents but it is now having to be constantlyrepaired by the handyman as uprights are broken. There are reports that bullies are using fenced areas to “trap” children.Young children like to run free and are happy to play, under supervision, onthe older children’s equipment, making up all kinds of imaginative games asthey do so. They do not necessarily feel safer in a confined space – Theyfeel safer when adults are with them.Dogs – Have been a problem on the Recreation Ground but new signs areabout to be put up and the Parish Council will try to get the message acrossthat there should not be any dogs on the grassed area. One of the biggestproblems is that it is often children, themselves, who bring dogs to the park.A fence may keep some dogs out but in some circumstances it could keep adog in …and that could be just as big a problem if not worse!Glass – on the old pavilion slab is a danger if children run free. This is obvi-ously true but we need to solve the problem. We need to keep the area clean, ask those who are smashing bottles not to do it because of the health risks toothers and most importantly of all - put a pavilion back on the site.Parents, Grandparents and others who take their children to the play area areresponsible for looking after them and it is them and not a fence that reallyensures their children’s safety. What I am convinced about is the need for a fence or barrier to prevent

young children from running from the play area into the car-park but is there aneed to go further than this ? Before I finally vote on this issue I need to knowthe views of parents with young children. We will know if we have got the grantin the first week of December and it is important that we have concluded thismatter by them.

Get nimble with your needles for Age UK Norfolk The Big Knit 2012

Age UK Norfolk is calling on nimble-fingered knitters in Norfolk to whip outtheir wool and needles and create little woolly hats for The Big Knit 2012. Nowin its ninth year, The Big Knit raises vital funds for local and national winter proj-ects to help keep older people warmer in winter.

Knitters across the UK are being asked to knit little woolly hats which will adornInnocent smoothie bottles in Sainsbury’s stores from 21st November. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Innocent will give 25p to Age UK’s Spread the Warmthcampaign, which will be passed on to Age UK Norfolk for each hat the localcharity contributes to the campaign.

Hilary MacDonald, Chief Executive at Age UK Norfolk said: “Winter can be a re-ally difficult time of year for many older people, so it’s really important that localknitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter proj-ects.”

This year Age UK Norfolk’s target is 1660 hats, so spread the word to friends andfamily or why not pick up a few stitches yourself?

And you don’t have to live in Norfolk to talk part. This year Age UK Norfolk’scontribution has an international edge with knitters busy knitting hats for us inSouth Africa and the USA. Toni Harrison, Marketing Officer at Age UK Norfolk,is competing with her aunt in Seattle and her mum in Johannesburg to see whocan knit the greatest number of hats for the campaign. A novice knitter, Toni haslearnt to knit especially for the fundraising challenge and is up against her auntwho has been a keen knitter for over three decades. The three are meeting up inSeattle in August for a knit and natter event.

The knitting patterns are free and are suitable for knitters of all abilities. The pat-terns are available on the Age UK Norfolk website www.ageuknorfolk.org.uk orby contacting Pat Brickley at [email protected] or on 01603787111.

Please send your knitted hats to Pat Brickley at Age UK Norfolk Head Office,300 St Faith’s Road, Old Catton, Norwich NR6 7BJ. For those who don’tfancy making a hat themselves, wool and needles can be donated to the same ad-dress to help others reach the target.

The final deadline for submissions is in October, but it would be helpful if asmany as possible could be sent in as soon as possible.

Whatever the weather

As I write in mid-July, it is supposed to be summer. Well, you could have fooledme! It seems that it hasn’t stopped raining for months! Although it is easy for usto grumble, it is sometimes easy to forget that our local wildlife has to grin andbear it.

The weather has made things difficult this year. Here at RSPB Lakenheath Fen,our bitterns have also suffered this year. Initially, signs were looking promising, with six “booming” males present. However, as we started counting nests, it be-came clear that things were not going very well. .............

We only seemed to have three or four active nests, compared to seven last year. Itis hard to say why they had such a bad year. Although the large amount of rainfalldidn’t help, it is more likely that the lower than average temperatures would havemade things difficult for them. The first male golden oriole was not heard singing until May 11, which is one ofthe latest recorded arrival dates on the reserve.

It seemed for a long time that this male was going to have a very lonely year, until late May when another male and a female were confirmed to be present. This prompted lots of frenzied activity and for a while, it looked like we weregoing to confirm breeding for the first time since 2009........ Alas, it seems that whatever was going on was a case of too little, too late. Pre-sumably, lack of food would have been an issue in this case as well, as the birdswould have been spending more time looking for food and less time trying tonest. Let’s hope for better news next year.

However, every cloud has a silver lining as they say! This year will go down inhistory as the first year that both pairs of cranes that nest on the reserve havefledged young in the same year. Both pairs had one young each and they bothtook their first flights on Wednesday July 11. This is fantastic news, especiallyconsidering how bad the weather has been. It not only shows that they are hardybirds, but that they just get on with it whatever the weather. A lesson for us all!
