In This Issue…

Dear BMAC Soror: We survived the blizzard of historic proportions! The snow was beautiful and serene as it accumulated the last week in January, but it is good to be on the other side of it—having it end. Yes, the blizzard ended just in time for us to get out and enjoy a delightful Maryland Statewide Founders Day Rededication and Luncheon. It was good to welcome Honorary Delta member, Daphne Maxwell Reid to Maryland as our keynote speaker, and I appreciated the

opportunity to introduce her—my fellow member of the Sorority’s National Arts and Letters Commission. In closing, I would like to thank the Technology Team for its hard work, and a special shout to Kena Jackson, our

chapter webmaster, for rebuilding the BMAC website and for setting up email addresses for all chapter officers and committee chairs.

It’s the month of love, sorors; tell someone that you love them. Better yet, show someone that you love them because we all know love is a verb! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Yours in Delta,

Joe Ann Oatis

Happy Heart Month!

Sorors, please join us as we celebrate Heart Month. Make sure that you and your loved ones participate in one heart healthy activity this month. Save February 27th for a fun filled family event sponsored by the BMAC, Physical and Mental Health Committee and the American Heart Association.

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE PLAN The Well-Woman Visit is now free, under most health plans and Medicare, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, yet less than half the population is aware that the Well-Woman Visit and other preventive services are now available without any out-of-pocket costs. Women should consult their plans for specific preventive services coverage language before scheduling a visit. For example, mentions of a specific condition or immediate health concern may trigger additional cost for the exam. The Well-Woman Visit can be scheduled with your primary care physician, nurse-practitioner, or even OB-GYN. It is a separate visit from other appointments for specific sicknesses or injuries.

YOUR WELL-WOMAN VISIT GOALS Your Well-Woman Visit is a chance to focus on your overall health and wellness. There are three main goals for your visit: • Documenting your health habits and history • Having a clear health checklist to better understand what to expect in your Well-Woman Visit • Setting your health goals

OUR HEALTH HISTORY Before your physical exam, your health care provider will ask you to answer some questions about your overall health. These questions may cover topics including: • Medical history • Family’s health history • Sexual health and sexual partners • Eating habits and physical activity

YOUR WELL-WOMAN VISIT CHECKLIST Here are the measurements, examinations, tests and screenings that might be part of your Well-Woman Visit that will help assess your health risks. The actual exams and screening tests conducted by your health care provider will depend upon your age, family history, and dates of previous screening tests, such as: • Use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs • Mental health history, including depression • Healthy relationships and personal safety • Current and past medications and supplements NOTE: EKGs are NOT recommended as a routine part of a Well-Woman Visit. Remember that 80% of cardiovascular disease may be prevented, and it all starts with a Well-Woman Visit. Schedule yours today!”

February’s Heart month is here. Have you scheduled your Well Woman visit?

Don’t forget to make your appointment with your physician today.

On Saturday, January 16, 2016 the EMBODI participants attended the 20th Annual Basketball Academy held at Morgan State University. The young men met at 10:00 am and remained until 4:00pm along with the committee members. The Basketball Academy is more than playing basketball. It is also a mentoring program for the youth. The Academy helps to develop leadership skills for our future leaders. During the three day event the participants are provided with sessions that involve college and career readiness by mentors that are a part of the program. Our boys attended on Saturday which was the culmination of the event. There were basketball games between various Baltimore City and County Schools. The boys watched as the girls teams played in the morning. They shared and agreed that the girls played hard, but that they could hardly wait to see the boys play in the afternoon. Our boys knew some of the players and were cheering for their favorite teams. They learned that during the academy, youth from across the city and county can engage in healthy team building activities and come together as one. The EMBODI committee and the boys volunteered at the souvenir journal and t-shirt stand. They had pizza for lunch and were provided with a Basketball Academy t-shirt to take home and enjoy. They really enjoyed this fun filled day and are already looking forward to next year. We are still accepting applications for young male participants ages 10-17. Applications can be obtained from our committee members or you may obtain one on the website. Please spread the word so that our male youth group can continue to grow.

Participants of The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy were invited to attend the M.A.D. (Make a Difference) Girl Conference sponsored by the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter on Saturday, January 16, 2016. Over 110 young women representing Shabazz and Gems from local Maryland Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta gathered for this event. This was the third year our girls shared in this enriching experience which enlightened, empowered, and strengthened bonds between both the girls and sorors in attendance. The participants were able to register and select from a variety of workshop topics addressing the current needs of today's female adolescent. The conference was held at the Delta House located on Springhill Avenue. All participants received a delicious catered lunch and many give-a-ways.

The Committee is asking that all sorors make a canned food donation at the February sorority meeting. Your support of the community service project being spearheaded by the participants of Shabazz will be greatly appreciated. During "Love Month" we would like to share with the Matthew Henson community.

Spirit in the Arts, Ticket sales, patron and ads are moving very slowly this year. We are "Calling all Sorors". We need your help. We need you to tell your family and friends about Spirit and how wonderful it is. We are asking that each soror purchase two tickets. This will assist in making this the year above all years. With our total membership along with your family and the community, we can garner enough money to fund our public service programs. We, the Arts & Letters committee will have tickets, patron and ad forms available before and after Chapter Meeting and at every Executive Board Meeting. The tickets will remain at $25 dollars so that everyone can afford to come. If you want to sponsor any of our youth program members, or scholarship recipients, let the Chairs of the various committees know. We want to include the entire community. If you have any information about corporate donations and or sponsorship, please contact us. Every little bit helps.

Filing Your 2015 Federal Income Tax Return

Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter ~ “Shaped To Its Purpose” Service, Leadership and Empowerment

Whether you're preparing your own tax return or paying someone to do it for you, tax season can be a stressful time of year. Make things easier on yourself by pulling all your information together sooner rather than later--that includes a copy of last year's tax return, W-2s, 1099s, and any deduction records you have. File On Time The filing deadline for most individuals is Monday, April 18, 2016. That's because Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., falls on Friday, April 15, this year. If you're not able to file your federal income tax return by the due date, you can file for an extension using IRS Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Filing this extension gives you an additional six months (until October 17, 2016) to file your federal income tax return. You can also file for an automatic six-month extension electronically (details on how to do so can be found in the Form 4868 instructions). Note: Special rules apply if you're living outside the country, or serving in the military outside the country, on the regular due date of your federal income tax return. Pay What You Owe One of the biggest mistakes you can make is not filing your return because you owe money. If the bottom line on your return shows that you owe tax, file and pay the amount due in full by the due date if at all possible. If you absolutely cannot pay what you owe, file the return and pay as much as you can afford. You'll owe interest and possibly penalties on the unpaid tax, but you will limit the penalties assessed by filing your return on time, and you may be able to work with the IRS to pay the unpaid balance (options available may include the ability to enter into an installment agreement). It's important to understand that filing for an automatic extension to file your return does not provide any additional time to pay your tax. When you file for an extension, you have to estimate the amount of tax you will owe; you should pay this amount by the April 18. If you don't, you will owe interest, and you may owe penalties as well. If the IRS believes that your estimate of taxes was not reasonable, it may void your extension.

Limited Planning Opportunities May Still Be Available Though the opportunity for many potential tax-saving moves closed on December 31, the window is still open for IRA contributions. You generally have until the April due date of your federal income tax return to make contributions to a traditional or Roth IRA for the 2015 tax year. That means there's still time to set aside up to $5,500 ($6,500 if you're age 50 or older) in one of these tax-advantaged savings vehicles. Note: To contribute to either a traditional or a Roth IRA for 2015, you (or, if you file a joint return, your spouse) must have received taxable compensation during the year. Provided that you did not reach age 70½ by the end of the year, you're able to contribute to a traditional IRA. Eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRA depends on your filing status and income. With a traditional IRA, you're generally able to deduct the full amount of your contribution, provided that you're not covered by a 401(k) or another employer-sponsored retirement plan; if you or your spouse is covered by an employer plan, the ability to deduct some or all of your contribution depends on your filing status and income. With a Roth IRA, there's no up-front deduction, so contributing won't affect your 2015 tax situation, but it's still worth considering given that future qualified Roth distributions are free of federal income tax. You also have until the due date of your return, including any extension, to undo ("recharacterize") a 2015 Roth IRA conversion. For example, if you converted a fully taxable traditional IRA worth $100,000 to a Roth IRA in 2015 and that Roth IRA is now worth only $50,000, the $100,000 will be included on your 2015 federal income tax return. If you recharacterize the conversion, however, it's as though it never happened--you have a traditional IRA worth $50,000, and no income or tax resulting from the conversion. If you do recharacterize a 2015 Roth conversion in 2016, you're allowed to convert those dollars (and any earnings) back to a Roth IRA after a 30-day waiting period (taxes due as a result of such a reconversion would be included on your 2016 federal income tax return). You don't have to do it alone When it comes to your taxes, you want to make sure that you get it right. A tax professional can answer any questions you have, help you evaluate your situation, and keep you apprised of any legislative changes that might affect you.

MY SISTER’S KEEPER

Genesis 4:9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” As we begin to serve in 2016, our scripture for this month opens with God asking Cain a question. It was a question that Cain already knew the answer to, but he gave a rather flippant, arrogant answer. Cain had an attitude problem. As sisters, how is your attitude? Do you feel that your sister is not your responsibility? What is the definition of keeper? It means to guard, watch, protect, and oversee. It doesn’t mean to take ownership over. We shouldn’t encourage each other to do wrong. It is our responsibility to love, support and encourage each other to do what is right. Romans 14:12 says that each of us will give an account for ourselves to God. This doesn’t give us freedom to do whatever we please. And in Galatians 6:5 we are told to carry our own weight, but we are also told to carry each other’s burdens. So we are to assist in helping our sisters with their burdens as we continue to work for our sorority and work for our chapter we will show that we are our brother’s keeper. Which of our relationships need strengthening or healing? Rev. Dr. Kathryn Carver
