Jeddah Cityis a Saudi city located in the middle of the eastern coast of the red sea known as the Bride of the Red Sea and is considered the economic and tourism capital of the country. Its population is estimated around 3.4 million and it is the second largest city after Riyadh.

The foundation of the city of Jeddah is dated back to around 3000 years when groups of fishermen used to settle in it after their fishing trips. After that, the tribe of ‹Quda›ah› came to Jeddah 2500 years ago and settled in it and was known by it.

The historical transformation of Jeddah was in the era of the third Muslim Caliph Othman Bin Affan (May Allah be Pleased with Him) in 647 AD when he ordered the city to be transformed into a port to welcome pilgrims (Hajjis) coming by sea for the Holy Pilgrimage in Makkah. To this day, Jeddah is the main passage for both sea and air pilgrims as well as those traveling by road.

Jeddah has grown during the last two decades of the 20th Century, which made the city a center for money and business in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a major and important port for exporting non-oil related goods as well as importing domestic needs.

Historic JeddahIs situated on the eastern shore of the Red Sea. From the 7th century A.D. it was established as a major

port for Indian Ocean trade routes, channeling goods to Mecca. It was also the gateway for Muslim

pilgrims to Mecca who arrived by sea. These twin roles saw the city develop into a thriving multicultural

center, characterized by a distinctive architectural tradition, including tower houses built in the late

19th century by the city’s mercantile elites, and combining Red Sea coastal coral building traditions

with influences and crafts from along the trade routes. On Saturday, 23 August 1435, corresponding

to June 21, 2014 AD was adopted historic area of Jeddah in the global Architectural Heritage List,

after the approval of the World Heritage Committee on recorded during a meeting of the UNESCO

Committee at its thirty-eighth session in Qatar.

JPTPThe Ministers Decree emphasized the importance of delivering the complete public transportation

project within 7 years. Therefore, the decree facilitated couple of exceptions to MJC such as using the

non-standard government contract and using FIDIC instead, the ability to prequalify contractors to

ensure specialized contractors are equally competitive, and to have separate bids for the technical

package and financial package where opening the financial package will be subject to the acceptance

of the technical package first. It is worth mentioning that MJC has two superior committees:

Higher committee Chaired by HRH Governor of Makkah Region and the membership of : The minister of Rural Affairs. Minister of Finance Minster of Transportation.

Steering committee Chaired by H.E Mayor of Jeddah and the membership of Deputy Governor of Makkah. Deputy Minister of Finance. Deputy Minister of Transportation. General Manger of traffic Department in Jeddah

Objectives Implementation of an integrated network for public transport in Jeddah Governorate. Promote the principle of safety and preservation of environment. Maintain the sustainability of public transport projects. MJC Has already worked with Aecom Arabia and Systra Company to review and update JPTP Master plan

for both phase1 (2020) and phase2 (2033).
