Rains are any day a welcome break in the hot and parched In-dian summer. The monsoon pattern in Kerala isn’t all about constant pitter patter. It rains and then the sun shines. Some days it might rain constantly but sun does interrupt the rain-ing Gods. Such is the twisty but interesting rain trend in Kerala!

The rain pattern in Kerala is split into two. There is the Southwest Monsoon called Edavappathy which comes in June, in the middle of the month of Edavam on the Malayalam Calendar. Then there is the Northeast Monsoon that comes in mid October. In the Malayalam calendar this month is called Thulam, which is why it gets the name Thulavarsham (meaning the ‘The Rains in Thulam’). The rain bearers come with speed to Kerala through the Western Ghats. It is a sight to watch the northeast winds entering the Kerala territory blessing the Keralites with constant downpour. This is one reason why monsoon season in Kerala boosts rejuvenation therapies for the people. The cli-mate becomes cool and dust-free. This stimulates the body pores to get the maximum benefits out of herbal oils and therapy that ensures greater flexibility of mus-cles and agility in body. The art forms seen in Kerala require total control over each body nerve. The mon-soon therapy through special oils works on the body of the artist making each muscle strong and supple. Splash-The 7th edition of this monsoon event is sched-uled to be held on July 10th, 11th & 12th, 2015, in Wayanad, Kerala. Splash, is a joint venture by Kerala Tourism, Government of Kerala & the Wayanad Tourism Organ-isation. Vizhinjam International Seaport

proposed at Vizhinjam is a dream

come true mega project that

would change the developmen-

tal landscape of Kerala as well

as the entire region of southern

Peninsula.

The total project expen-diture is estimated at Rs. 6596 crores over three phases. There has been a steady growth of container traffic at the Indian ports.

Now majority of these ports rely on direct services or use of far-off ports for trans-shipment needs. This is the reason why an Inter-national Deepwater Seaport

and Container Trans-ship-ment Terminal has become essential in the southern Indian Peninsula. For the Trivandrum region the port project is important

because Vizhinjam is just 16 km from the Trivandrum city. It is just 10 nautical miles from the International shipping lane. Vizhinjam port is endowed with a natural seawater depth of 24 m, one nautical mile away from the sea coast. This natural depth can at-tract large container vessels now in operation, and also the mega container carriers in the future.

The Vizhinjam port is im-portant because it is located at the southern tip of the sub continent and is 10 to

12 nautical miles from the busy Persian Gulf - Malacca shipping lane which carry almost one third of the world shipping traffic. The proposed port is a green field project, away from urban limit and thus can be master planned and shaped by developers as per their needs. It can turn out to be an efficient and modern productive port. Once a port is operational Indian exporters need not have to rely on foreign ports for trans-shipment of cargo. It is a big blessing to Kerala tourism because it can attract large cruise ships with competitive rates of harbour charges. This will bring thousands of tourists to Kerala shore triggering off growth in tourism at all tourist locations in Kerala.Kerala has already awarded the Vizhinjam port Project to Adani who is an expe-rienced port builder and operator having projects in India and abroad. How-ever the initiatives are still riddled with too many ob-jections and obstacles. Our democratic set up is not able to stand together for this lifetime dream project for development. People forget the fact that these are our contribution to the future generation living in

this part of the country. The related processes of entrusting the project with Adani have to be speeded up. Narrow differences should be forgotten for a bigger future. The project will surely change the economic scenario of the south. Adani Group is known for their exper-tise in building ports and managing them efficiently. People of Kerala should forget differences and join their hands together for making the project a reality and creating a great future for ourselves. It should be a win-win situation for all concerned including the political parties. We should recognize the forces trying to scuttle the projects from far, and defeat them for the sake of our future. The business community of Kerala and particularly that of the Trivandrum region is all out in support of the project and they demand fast implementation of the project. Above all the tourism Industry in Kerala supports the project and the ‘Confederation of Kerala Tourism Industry’ (CKTI) has extended its full support and co-operation to the government for the speedy implementation of the Project.

The Kerala cabinet decided to rope in none other than the star who has to her credit 22 Grand Slam titles. The Kerala tourism department was given sanction to sign an agreement with Graf to become Ayurveda

Tennis legend Steffi Graf appointed the Ayurveda brand ambassador of Kerala

brand ambassador as part of the depart-ment’s ‘Visit Kerala Scheme’. The Kerala government believes that Steffi in her role as brand ambassador will rub a soothing balm to Kerala’s ailing ayurveda tour sector.

A decision in this regard was taken by

the cabinet. The proposal had come

from the state Tourism Department and

a formal agreement on this would be

reached with Steffi Graf soon.

Oommen ChandyChief Minister

The Ayurveda tourism segment is a prime component in terms of revenue generation for the state, and it has been revealed that tennis star was more than keen to take up the assignment when approached in this

regard. With 107 tennis titles in her kitty, Steffi is all set to serve some match winning aces for Kerala’s Ayurveda Tourism segment. In 1999, Graf was selected as 20th century’s best women player. In 1988, Graf became the first and the only tennis player to have won the all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year.

Kerala’s Ayurveda, an ancient system of health care which is famous for its holistic ef-fect on body and mind, attracts large number of people from the country and abroad every year.

God’s Own Country hopes to capitalize on Steffi Graf’s popularity in the outside world as well as in the domestic circuit. The decision is sure to boost Kerala Ayurveda Tourism’s presence in the global leisure and health travel scenario.

Go back to history and you will find wonderful

things about a sea port. A port is a reflection

of growth, economic prosperity,

industrialisation and thriving tourism. Deepika Dewan

After a quarter of a century, Vizhinjam International Sea-port in the state of Kerala is back in the limelight. The Vizhinjam Port proposal has

been finally cleared by the Kerala Government.

to Adani Ports Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), the sole bidder. Adani Ports will commence the work on November 1 this year.

Oommen Chandy, Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala said “ Government of Kerala is firmly committed to realise this prestigious project. It will be a landmark achieve-ment for our country and will be a great contribution to our economy.”

K. Babu, Minister for Excise and Ports said “The Government will expedite this project by clearing all the hurdles, we will ensure a high level of efficiency and transparency in all the activities.” APSEZ is India’s largest private port operating firm had submitted the bid on April 24 seeking Rs. 1,635 crore as grant. The board set up for executing the project, Vizhinjam Interna-tional Seaport Ltd, accepted the bid after which it was further sanctioned by a high powered committee headed by the Chief Secre-tary. Subsequently, the bid was referred to the state Cabinet for final approval. This deepwater shipping

hub at the moment is in its initial stages of growth. It is believed that the Adanis will invest Rs. 2,454 crore on their own.

Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) is a special purpose govern-ment company, fully owned by the Kerala Govern-ment. VISL would act as an implementing agency for the development of a Greenfield port - Vizhinjam International Deep Water Multipurpose Seaport- at Vizhinjam. Just 3 km away from Kovalam beach, Vizhinjam has been a port which is situated close to in-ternational shipping routes in Thiruvananthapuram. The proposal was devel-oped on the landlord model keeping in mind the cater-ing capacity to containers, passengers, cargo. If you ask the total project expen-diture, it is to the whopping tune of Rs. 7,524-crore (first phase) which will be split over three phases. Vizhin-jam as a place is very much popular for its Ayurvedic centers and beach resorts.

Project highlights

Shri K Babu said that Vizhin-jam will be a gift for the

people of Kerala on Novem-ber 1, which happens to be the State Formation Day.

The contract covers building port superstructure and operating the port for a period of 40 years, which is inclusive of four years of construction. When com-pleted, it would have the capacity to berth 18,000 TEU mother ships. While speaking to newspersons, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the decision on Vizhinjam is subject to approval from the Election Commission in view of cam-paigning for by-elections to the Aruvikkara Assembly constituency.

The government hoped to get the necessary clear-ance since the project was conceived much earlier and had reached advanced stages of awarding when the model code of conduct came into effect.

Advantages of Vizhinjam Port

The port site has several advantages for itself:

- Nearness to international shipping route.

Page 17: Metro Mart June 2015

Page 18: Metro Mart June 2015

- Closeness to national and regional roads as also rail network. - Design flexibility and posi-tive commercial environ-ment such as international airport, human resource and social infrastructure in Thiruvananthapuram. - Access to Trivandrum International Airport, which is known to hold the largest cargo unit in South India.- Proximity to Cochin inter-national port that would make the emergence of twin international harbours possible, which would be the first in the world. - The political, commercial and technological impor-tance associated with Trivandrum which is the fastest growing IT hub in India. - Apt weather and climate conditions of Trivandrum that make it suitable for Western operators. - Great access to the tourist climate and international beaches like Kovalam and Shangumugham. -The fact that Trivandrum is the potential target for Metro services. - Availability of educated, qualified and English speak-ing public in and around the City.

Vizhinjam –Boosting power

The Vizhinjam harbour is no ordinary one. It is the site of an exceptional plant that would be converting wave energy into electricity. This will be done using OWC meaning Oscillating Water Columns. The electricity that is generated from here would be fed into the local grid.

Vizhinjam – Tourism Potential

It will be heartening to know that Kerala was listed as one of the 10 paradises in the world by National Geographic. Keeping with this premise, specialized cruise facilities charging competitive rates can pro-mote significant tourism. With Kovalam and Varkala as major tourist destina-tions in our country, and Kollam, which is a popular gateway for lagoons and backwaters in all of 2 hours drive, the impact it will have on tourism would be phenomenal.

Here are 10 things you need to know about the proposed port:

1. Vizhinjam is an all-weath-

er port located on Southern tip of Indian Peninsula, just 10 nautical miles from the International Shipping Lane, making it capable of tapping the lion’s share of Indian transhipment cargo, now being largely handled by Colombo. So once the port is up, Indian exporters will not have to rely on foreign ports for trans-shipment of cargo. It is expected to save at least 1000 crores in expenditure annually

2. Vizhinjam port is endowed with a natural seawater depth of up to 24 m as close as one nautical mile from the seacoast. Due to this natural depth, Vizhinjam can attract the largest container vessels currently in operation and also the future mega con-tainer carriers.

3. Vizhinjam lies Central to the eastern and western coast lines of India and thus can cater to the needs of both west and east coast.

4. The project cost and maintenance cost will be minimum as the site needs minimal capital dredging. Availability of 20m contour within one nautical mile from the coast would facili-

Page 19: Metro Mart June 2015

Page 20: Metro Mart June 2015

tate flexibility of shipping operations.

5. The first stage would involve the construction of a breakwater stretching a length of 3,030 metres. Two mammoth container ships of 18,000 teu (twenty-foot equivalent units) would be able to anchor at the 800-metre-long berth to be built for transhipment ves-

sels. The first stage will have birthing facilities not only for big container ships, but also for the Indian Navy and the Coastguard, besides a cruise terminal.

6. The total project expendi-ture is pegged at Rs 6,595 crores over three phases and is proposed to follow

the landlord port model with a view to catering to passenger, container and other clean cargo. Phase I is estimated to cost Rs 3,040 crore. Adani Group would invest Rs 2,454 crore and has sought a grant of Rs 1,635 crore from state and central governments. The balance amount is proposed to be raised as Rs 1,130 crore equity from

Government of Kerala and as debt through loans from banks/ institutions and through bonds.

7. The proposed port is a Green-field project, away from urban/city limits, and thus can be master planned and shaped by the develop-er as per his own efficient designs and needs into an

efficient, modern and highly productive port.

8. No acquisition of land is needed for the port as it will come up in the land reclaimed from sea. Hence, there is very minimal reha-bilitation and resettlement issues.

9. Vizhinjam has excellent connectivity to rail (10 Km),

national highway (3 Km) and international airport (15km).

10. Vizhinjam offers im-mense scope for tourism infrastructure development in future due to its proxim-ity to international tourist destinations like Kovalam(3 km) Poovar(15 km) and Ponmudi.

The socially forward com-munities who do not qualify in any of the reservation schemes /affirmative action of the Government of India or any of the State Govern-ments, constitutes 26 % of the total population in Kerala. A majority of people among the forward commu-

A silicon oil regulating apparatus that can save Rs 25 lakh annually featured prominently among innovations at IIP 2015 (Industry Institute Partnership 2015), an expo organized by HLL Lifecare Limited to feature innovative projects by students of Mohandas College of Engineering and Technology (MCET) as part of Industry Institute Partnership Programme of HLL.

MART UPDATE

Student engineering innovations at HLL Lifecare Expo

An industry-institute partnership was formalised with a MoU signed in 2014, following the identification of technically and finan-cially viable projects that MCET could undertake for HLL Lifecare. A team of five students each selected the projects to work on from a list identified by HLL.

“The objective behind host-ing IIP 2015 was to shine the spotlight on student projects that demonstrated innovative thinking,” said Dr M Ayyappan, HLL Chairman and Managing Director, who inaugurated the function. “Students’ exposure to the real engineering world is very limited. Sensing this,

HLL has been giving utmost importance to Industry Institute collaborations.”“While in universities researchers’ prioritise edu-cation and basic researches, in corporate world manag-ers pursue products and profits”, he added. He urged educational institutions in Kerala to approach industries for pro-viding a holistic academic education to students. He said that if academic institutions do not ap-proach industries for similar tie-ups, industrial units will start their own academic institutions. He also added that HLL has the capabilities and ideas to design its own machines. “We are planning to invest substantially on automation soon,” he said.Changes can be brought only by innovation, said Shri Kuncheria P Issac, chief guest and Vice Chancel-lor, Kerala Technological University. Likewise, techni-cal students should strive become innovators and entrepreneurs for the ben-efit of common man and to raise their living standards,

Page 53: Metro Mart June 2015

said Shri Issac, who lauded the work of Dr Ayyappan in elevating HLL to its present position. The function also served as a platform to recognize the faculties and students of MCET who interned with HLL and worked hard on these innovative projects.

The end products—a vending machine, taping machine, packing “robots” and automated packaging systems, among others—re-flect the engineering apti-tude of the students, who worked on the time-bound projects under the guidance

of Commodore (retd) V N Ajith Kumar of MCET and Shri Rajeev, Deputy Chief Engineer heading the HLL Lifecare Central Engineering Division.

Under the industry-institute partnership, there is an ongoing project of factory visits for MCET students, industrial training, internships, and training programmes and seminars organised by HLL.

While Shri Kuncheria distributed certificates to MCET faculty who did their internship at HLL, Shri Mo-

handas, Chairman of MCET, gave away certificates to students who did proj-ects for HLL and Smt Rani Mohandas, Secretary MCET, gave away certificates for students who interned with HLL.

Other dignitaries present were Dr K R S Krishnan, Director (Technical and Operations) HLL, Dr Asha Latha Thampuran, Director, MCET, Shri RP Khandelwal, Director (Finance), HLL and principals from Government Engineering College and LBS Centre for Science and Technology.

Chief Minister inaugurates KASE’s skill development institute in nursing

Ushering in a groundbreak-ing endeavour in nursing education, Chief Minister Shri Oommen Chandy inaugurated the swanky campus of the Centre for Excellence in Nursing under the Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE) at the Kinfra Apparel Park in Thiruvananthapuram.“This KASE initiative, which is being done in a fitting partnership with UAE’s NMC Healthcare, will pro-vide practical training for

nurses in the face of com-petition and improve their employability globally,” said the chief minister. “The gov-ernment is proud to fully back this project which will improve job opportunities for many youngsters.”While nurses from Kerala were widely employed in hospitals in Europe and the US in the 1960s and 70s, the trend started seeing a downturn—though the demand remained—with nurses from the state find-

ing jobs only in the Middle East’s war-ridden areas. The Nursing Institute for Ca-reer Enhancement (NICE), which is training 150 stu-dents in its first batch, aims to bridge the gap between nursing education and mar-ket demands with world-class training to nurses that will help them to find jobs anywhere in the world. This batch will obtain their certi-fication by September, and the institute assures jobs to the successful candidates in the best hospitals in the Middle East with lucrative pay scales.Labour and Skills Minister Shri Shibu Baby John first conceived the institute sensing the need for nurses worldwide; South American countries were calling for 20,000 nurses and Singa-pore was relaxing entry visa norms for this profession.“We are doing a big service to nursing graduates by bringing them up to inter-national standards,” said the minister. “One of the highlights of this institute is that the global health-care industry can directly recruit from this institution,

Vizhinjam – A Green Pasture

The bedlam over the upcoming Vizhinjam Port has set many like me thinking –Doesn’t the

edge gained far outweigh the loss or fall-outs anticipated ? I have no doubt that the new

port will boost the tourism and allied industries in that area in particular and the economy

of the region and the state in general.

The new port will bring in not just cargo ships but cruise liners too. This would mean more

inflow of tourists and demand for new hotels, restaurants etc. Why even local shacks and

small-shops would benefit. New areas and beaches other than just Kovalam and Poovar-

which service these areas would receive attention and would be developed. Why, even

city tourism would partake in the bounty.

Cargo ships docking in the port would in turn lead to a plethora of fresh demands. Being

situated on the sea route between Europe / Middle- East to the Far-East and Australia, it

will be an ideal stop-over for large ships for fueling . Also once the port is operational,

bustling port-related activity would generate job opportunities for our local people

The fringe benefits of the new port and the boost in tourism in the areas include the

bolstering of other industries and trading – be it a supermarket chains, large warehouses,

increase in container traffic, wifi / mobile phone operations, etc.

Of course, any threat to the environment be it to ecosystem in general and marine life in

particular or to the seasonal fish harvests in the region has to be looked into to see if the

arguments are tenable. The sensitive issue of displacement requires careful handling even

counselling by the authorized. These things taken care of, it has to be examined if our fear

psychosis regarding the port is justthat inherent resistance to change – be it a new road, a

new industry, a new airport or a new port.
