WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE COLUMBIA METRO ROTARY CLUB VOLUME 26-01 JULY 11, 2018
Announcements!Announcements!Announcements!Announcements! Programming Committee Chair Jim Sharrock announced that this committee would meet at 1:00 p.m. today. The Metro Board of Directors will meet July 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the Columbia Country Club. The Community Services Committee is accepting donations for Boone County’s 12th Annual Back to School Health Fair. Contact Mandy Schick if you would like to make a financial donation. Specifics about the fair are posted on page three of this newsletter. On July 31, there will be a celebration of youth at Shakespeare’s Pizza West from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. ReachOut Metro, RYLA, Rotaract and Interact will be highlighted. Everyone is invited to attend.
On August 8, a “Stop the Bleed” training will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Columbia Country Club. After a traumatic event, the fate of a person suffering from severe blood loss often
will be determined before professional medical help arrives. This program is designed to turn bystanders into life-savers. Please contact Tom Rose if you wish to attend the training. On September 16, there will be a cornhole tournament at Katfish Katy’s. $20 per team. Proceeds benefit PolioPlus. Dues for the 2018-2019 year are now payable. You may pay $200 now, or $100 in two installments. Payments should be forwarded to Laura Kogut via check, cash or online.
Former Metro Rotarian is Missouri State Auditor
Nicole Galloway is the 38th auditor of the State of Missouri. She took her oath of office on April 27, 2015, and is a certified public accountant and a certified fraud examiner. Prior to becoming State Auditor, Nicole served as Treasurer of Boone County, and she was a member of Metro Rotary! A native of St. Louis, Nicole received her undergraduate degree from Missouri S&T, and she advanced her degree at the University of Missouri. She lives in Columbia with her husband, Jon, and their three boys. The State Auditor’s office is considered Missouri’s independent watchdog agency. Nicole spoke of the important role her office plays in ensuring that public funds are being used properly and efficiently. There are certain audits her office is required to make on a regular basis, and there are other audits they perform after special requests or inquiries. She noted that during her time in office, over $300 million in government waste, fraud, misuse and/or mismanagement had been identified. Most states have laws protecting government and/or private sector employees who report the illegal or unethical activities of their employers (referred to as whistleblowers). Generally, these laws prohibit employers from retaliating against the whistleblowers, by firing them or otherwise punishing them for reporting illegal activities to authorities. Missouri’s laws protect public employees only. During the 2019 legislative session, Nicole plans to present drafted language to have this law cover all employees. Nicole indicated her office will continue to pursue ethics reform and work to ensure transparency and appropriate use of all public funds in Missouri.

Financial Update
Thank you to everyone who has purchased lunches during the past year. This goes a long way to help offset the cost to the club for use of this meeting space. In case you were unaware, the Country Club assesses our club a minimum of 30 lunches per meeting, currently at $13 per lunch, but increasing to $14 in 2018-19. We average about 20 purchased lunches per meeting. At this rate, we have paid an average of $130 per week to make up for the shortage of the minimum requirement. Any amount that other members would like to or be willing to contribute, especially if you do partake of some food (i.e. cookies) and drink, would be greatly appreciated. We continue to provide for our members what has been determined to be a great meeting place at one of the lowest levels of club dues in the district. Your consideration and support is needed and would be greatly appreciated.
