Undertaking a lighting project for any
‘metro’ type application raises a number
of challenges that have to be overcome.
These include ensuring that the range
of luminaires utilised are able to provide
the desired lumen performance required
in areas such as platforms, tunnels,
train care facilities, public areas (such
as ticket offices, escalators etc), train
line, external access points (car parks,
pathways etc) and staff working areas.
It all leads to ensuring that the
complete ‘light solution’ illuminates
the required area cost effectively
and is mindful of light spill.

case study: Waverley Station
Refurbishment of Edinburgh Waverley station included installation of surface-mounted Prismashield luminaires using 2 x 49W T5 fluorescent tubes. Along with Prismpack S and Parkpack fixtures, these are being used to light walkways leading from the main ‘Waverley Steps, over new escalators to the station concourse - as well as lighting the new canopies on platforms 8 and 9.
A key requirement of the project was for an asymmetric light distribution to minimise light spillage to ‘trackside’. Thanks to its prismatic polycarbonate diffuser with internal prisms, Prismashield was able to achieve this easily - while also providing the ability to resist extreme acts of vandalism. Despite its low profile of just 73mm, Prismashield is able to withstand impacts of up to 50 joules.

Lighting for rail
When tailoring a lighting scheme for
metro applications it is key to ensure
that the design of the lighting takes
into account the special requirements
of the railway environment, which
can be harsh in deterioration of the
luminaires and difficult for access
to maintain the equipment.
The effective maintenance of luminaires
is essential to its continuing efficiency
and adherence to the requirements
of specific rail standards. Therefore
luminaires and controls systems
used in a metro environment must
be straightforward to install, easy
to operate and simple to maintain
whilst also ensuring the maintained
illuminance is achieved throughout
the life of the luminaire(s).
Why lighting in rail?
The aim of the lighting design is to
permit simple, safe and effective
maintenance whilst avoiding the need
for any special equipment, track
possessions or interruptions, isolation
of equipment and delays to service.
It is key that uniformity of lighting levels
are appropriate to the environment it
is used in and can also be maintained.
Consideration has to be given to the
needs of disabled, mobility and/or
sensory impaired persons. Minimum
levels of brightness are not necessarily
the most appropriate for levels of
comfort, security and safety, these
should only be applied as a minimum
for maintained illuminance levels.
Being a member of LIF (Lighting
Industry Federation), a recognized
body within the lighting fraternity,
we constantly apply good practice
and information on EU directives and
reference to national legislation on
railway lighting matters highlighted
in documents produced by the LIF.

SuperGlass™ HighbayHOLOS2
case study: Kings Cross Station
Optimal positioning of Prismpack highbay luminaires utilising Superglass refractors in the train sheds at Kings Cross station, combined with the HOLOS2 lighting control system, has enabled 56% energy savings - compared to the original design.
Our designers used 3D solid modelling to assess the initial design and proposed alternative layout of luminaires to fully exploit Prismpack’s exceptionally light distribution capabilities. This allowed the proposed 450W lamps to be substituted with 400W lamps enabling energy savings.
In fact this still exceeded the required light levels so Holophane’s Optimised Lighting Operating System (HOLOS 2) has been set to under-run the lamps initially and reduce energy consumption even further. As the lamps age and lumen output falls, the power to them will be increased to maintain illumi-nance levels.
HOLOS 2 also enables the lighting to be dimmed in relation to natural daylight levels, and between the hours of midnight and 4am.

case study: Bounds Green LMD
When Network Rail decided to refurbish high bay lighting at its Light Maintenance Depot (LMD) in Bounds Green, London it opted for our Prismalume luminaires and HOLOS 2 digital controls. This combination gave Network Rail significant savings in energy consumption, compared to the previous lighting, combined with a vastly improved lighting scheme and greater visual comfort for the workforce. Extended lamp life was an additional advantage.
Prismalume Superglass high bay luminaires use a unique prismatic glass reflector that both reflects and refracts the light. The result is very efficient light distribution, enabling fewer luminaires to meet the design requirements at Bounds Green, with an enhanced visual environment and exceptional vertical and horizontal illuminance.
Further efficiencies are achieved with Holophane’s Optimised Lighting Operating System (HOLOS 2), which is linked to presence detectors to dim and light levels in relation to occupancy increaseon the platforms. All of this provided a 38% reduction in power consumption, compared to the un-controlled lighting system previously in place.

case study: Victoria Station
In developing a new lighting system for Victoria Station in London, Holophane worked closely with Network Rail and English Heritage to create a scheme that addresses efficiency, performance and aesthetic requirements, to suit the architecture and space.
The solution uses a combination of 1 x 400W and 2 x 400W ‘Egg’ luminaires with metal halide lamps, giving 75% downlight and 25% uplighting of the architectural roof structure. These luminaires also underwent rigorous testing to ensure there would be no falling debris in the event of an explosion in the station. The Egg fittings are combined with Prismashield anti-vandal fluorescent luminaires and Seattle floodlights for directional lighting.
The lighting at the station is on 24 hours a day, so to achieve maximum energy efficiency the larger Egg fittings have been linked to a HOLOS 2 lighting control system to dim in response to daylight and minimise energy consumption during the day.

case study: Orient Way
Our High Mast systems and Prismalume luminaires are ensuring that suitable light levels are maintained within the Temple Mills Eurostar repair sheds and train line at Orient Way. The £400 million “big shed”, more officially known as Temple Mills Depot, is now the main heavy duty repair centre for Eurostar trains and replaced the original UK depot at North Pole near Willesden. Working closely with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project team, we designed a lighting system that delivered a high level of flexibility while optimising visual performance and energy efficiency.
The High Mast system uses 20m high masts with IP65 cut-off luminaires; each mast uses 4 x 400W high pressure sodium lamps. To meet the lighting requirements in the sheds, these have been configured to provide a long and narrow lighting distribution. The High Masts are fitted with an integral winch assembly to facilitate lowering the head frame for re-lamping and maintenance.
The High Mast system works in harmony with 515 x 400W ventilated Prismalume luminaires which are situated in the “big shed” - which is 435m long, 54m wide and has a roof height of 12m. Prismalume was a perfect solution for this application as the maintenance cycle for glass luminaires meant that they will only need to cleaned when changing the lamps, whereas aluminium or plastic would need cleaning every 2 years.

Atlanta™Aeris®
case study: Victoria Street MSCP, St Albans
The design of the lighting scheme at the busy Victoria Street multi-storey car park in St. Albans, serving St. Albans rail station, ensures that drivers have very high visibility for maximum safety. In the enclosed storeys our stylish circular Atlanta luminaires are mounted on ceilings and their prismatic optic lens ensure even light distribution on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, with some upward light to the ceilings. This has helped to avoid the ’tunnel effect’ often experienced in multi-storey car parks, while minimising the number of luminaires required to achieve the desired light levels.
On the roof, our Aeris luminaires are mounted on 5m columns and use a flat tempered glass to provide full cut-off of light at and above the horizontal plane. Precise light distribution is delivered by the horizontal light optics, which also reduce energy consumption, control spill light and reduce glare.
